They put Lemmon in front of the camera and turned him up to eleven. One the great performances ever. Falk as the best second for the cherry on top.

Jack Lemmon's Professor Fate was like a human version of Wile E Coyote, someone with sinister plans that fail miserably. Like the Coyote chasing the Roadrunner we start feeling sympathetic with the coyote despite the fact he's supposed to be the villain, or is he? Let's face it he does try especially with his stunts, and let's face it the Hannibal 8 is a cool car and it has style.

Words cannot truly express how much this movie has meant to My dad, my brothers, and especially me. My dad showed us this movie when we were little kids, we are now in our thirties and still absolutely laugh our asses off at Jack Lemons performance as Professor Fate ( and of course Prince Hopnik but he deserves his own video) we watch this togetjor atleast 100 times and chances are we will watch it 100 more.

This movie has it all !!!!!!! Comedy, suspense, adventure, mystery, damsels in distress, romance, intrigue, drama, action, old west “cowboys & Indians”, bar room brawls, impressive stunts, cool cars, period costumes, heros and villains, an all-star cast and a supporting cast 2nd to none, a pie fight to end all pie fights, the most intricate and interesting contraptions, appealing to ages from 5 to 105, a “player pipe organ”, a fully stuffed moose, mildly risqué but utterly attractive wardrobe for Ms. Wood and a soundtrack that sets the perfect tone for the movie!!! I’ve loved this movie since I first saw it on TV, probably very late ‘60’s or very early 70’s (I would’ve been around 6 or 7 years old... ) Back then it was presented over 2 consecutive evenings, stopping at the actual movie intermission. As a very young kid, part 1 was by far more entertaining, with all the different stunts and contraptions and pratfalls. I didn’t see the entire move until I was at least 10 or so, although obviously didn’t understand the underlying themes until I was an adult. By far, my top #1 movie of all time!!!

What is amazing to me is that my very first time ever watching a Jack Lemmon movie was "The Great Race"!!!. If my memory is correct to the best of my knowledge I believe that I may have been either 7 or 8 years old and my family all came together to watch "The Great Race" in our living room. During my childhood I only knew Jack Lemmon as "Professor Fate". I had no idea he played many other great roles in many films. I only knew him as "Professor Fate". The Great Race will ALWAYS be one of my favorite movies of all time!

I find it so cool that you voted my favorite line from the entire movie to be #1. I'm 60 years old and have been enjoying this film for decades. It's one of my top three favorites. I hear so many people say that Lemmon's "over the top" performance keeps them from fully enjoying the movie, but I surmise that they don't understand that it's the essence of old-fashioned, vaudeville-style melodrama. I don't think anyone could have come close to giving the performance that Jack Lemmon did.

"The Great Race" was Blake Edwards' tribute to the silent cinema as well as a commentary on the battle betwixt the sexes. All that was missing was Natalie Wood doing a Pearl White on a buzzsaw or train tracks. Two notable scenes that I would've included: !. Prof. Fate exposes himself as a phony car executive, then escapes out a window. 2. His first stunt .

@@ChattingwithMarkStise Mark...go to 4:11 when the pyrotechnics go off. The entire crowd ducks and runs for their lifes at the exact same time. Next to the white structure in the background is 1 of 2 horses and you can see it get totally spooked by the sound and sight of that fireball. That fireball may very well have been larger than intended ( wouldn't be the first time in Hollywood especially given it was back in the 60's) as the crowd is pretty close to it and it is fairly large burst of flame. Loved this movie as a kid....especially that scene.

6:08 Doctor Fate wins the race because his opponent (played by Tony Curtis) allows himself to lose to prove that he loves his traveling companion more than the race and Doctor Fate is offended because he won honestly. You missed the scene where Doctor Fate presses the cannon button at the beginning of the second race to destroy his opponent's car and you can see a panoramic view of the Eiffel Tower collapsing in the distance.

No reflection on my enjoyment of these scenes, but I wonder where so many people got the idea that infringing on another's copyright, and then claiming the "no copyright infringement intended" in ANY WAY excuses them of changes the law. It is like speeding or stealing, and doing it in the most blatant way, while saying "I don't intend to violate the speed limit" or "I dont intend to steal this valuable item".

Who can name the only “The Great Race” cast member who is still alive today… (At least I think there is only one)… Hint: he or she is no spring chicken 🐓 ! Who can name the last actor from the cast of the movie that passed away, leaving the person above as the last living cast member? I think it’s been at least five or 10 years… Good luck!
