He was chosen as "German Sportsma of the Year" in the same year as the first and on weightlifter to ever win this title. He is in a row with legends like Boris Becker, Michael Schumacher and Dirk Nowitzki - and rightfully so.

@@XA--pb9ni I could hold it back but only until the end when it all culminated in him going above and beyond to get the gold, risking pain injury and failure. Then I could no more. The wet buildup in my eyes became too heavy to hold, like rain in a cloud.

literally makes me tear up! i remember a art work i saw: while he lifted the weight they animated his wife's spirit helping him hold the bar up. really made me cry. especially since he felt like she was w him. I'm very sure she was :)

Not a follower of Olympic weightlifting, never heard of this guy and honestly didnt even care. But seeing that you made a video, i was sure that it would have something in it. Amazing breakdown of an amazing story...good job explaining what Matthias actually did. Many people here in germany know the story, but only a few really know what happened and even fewer can comprehend how insane that was. And it still gets me...every single time. Also Matthias appeared in numerous shows and interviews and he is just such a nice and humble person. You just had to love the guy. And thats why this for me personally is the most impressing moment in sports ever.
