The Grinch (also known as Dr. Seuss' The Grinch) is a 2018 American 3D computer-animated Christmas film. Based on the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss, it is the third screen adaptation of the story, following the television special from 1966 starring Boris Karloff and the live-action feature-length film from 2000 starring Jim Carrey. The film is directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier, and written by Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow. It stars the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Cameron Seely, and Angela Lansbury, and is narrated by Pharrell Williams.

I really wouldn’t mind if they had done something creative with it. When I was watching the movie for the first time and they showed the orphanage scene, I thought that the movie’s twist was going to be that being seen as a grinch was just a stereotype that the Whos forced upon him so that they didn’t have to deal with economic inequality ruining their holiday. I think that this would have at least been an interesting and controversial message. It would have had implications for the way we celebrate Christmas today too. Obviously, that wasn’t the message, though. As is, the backstory was really confusing.

I honestly enjoyed the Jim Carrey one. Its no masterpiece but in my household its a little bit of a classic. The energetic acting really steals the show and some of jokes land really well. Jim is always fun to watch when he's going wild. Something about it just appeals to me, I'd call it a guilty pleasure but I don't feel guilty about enjoying it.

@LegendPurpleDragon152
@LegendPurpleDragon152 2 жыл бұрын
@@wesleythomas7125 No. there is a difference. Cartoons are just comedy with very little consistency cause the humor is the point. Animated films can have comedy but they’re usually more grounded, think Lion King vs Looney Tunes. Looney Tunes are off the wall zany with models that can stretch twist and mold however they like with comedy being the point. Lion King, however, are closer to real life. The characters can get hurt, if they die they die, if a limb gets broken it gets broken. But the point is to tell a more engaging story beyond just making someone laugh. The only thing they share is that they’re animated. And its absolutely annoying that western society has that attitude.

Wait, are you serious? Cumberbatch is a good actor, but if this is true, then it's clear that he DOES NOT understand the original source material AT ALL. The Grinch was supposed to have a deep intimidating voice. It would be a voice that would fit someone so mean like him. But with the voice Cumberbatch did, it just goes against who the character is and removes all the intimidation out of him. But then again the writers of this film did that as well so I shouldn't be shocked.

Maybe it’s just me, but the fact that they cast Benedict Cumberbatch but didn’t actually let him use his actual voice angers me way more than it probably should. I remember when they first released the poster for this movie and announced that Cumberbatch was voicing the Grinch, I actually had a spark of hope in the movie since I felt that was perfect casting. But no, they just got him to do the most generic ass voice u can think of. Don’t get me wrong, there are certain movies that he has been in that work without his deep British accent, such as the MCU movies, but it worked there because it helped make Doctor Strange a more relatable character than he was in the comics. It doesn’t work for the Grinch because he’s not supposed to be relatable. We’re supposed to think he’s mean. He’s supposed to be one of those characters that we love to hate so that it makes his redemption at the end all the more satisfying. Whether u love or hate the Jim Carey version, u can’t deny the fact that Jim Carrey nailed it when it came to the Grinch’s voice, personality, and movement. So personally, I’ll take the Jim Carrey version over this version any day of the week because for all the things that movie got wrong, the one thing that I believe it absolutely nailed was the character of the Grinch. Not sure if people will agree with me, but that’s how I feel.

To be fair to the 2018 version, the Grinch probably goes into Whoville a lot because he obviously can't get any food on the top of Mt. Krumpit and just tries to keep to himself, all the while doing petty things to inconvenience the Whos around him. Their diehard fanaticism for Christmas and harshness towards anyone who chooses not to celebrate is probably the reason why the Grinch hates Christmas, and isn't on good terms with the Whos.

Even if Cindy was older in the Carrey version, she had A PERSONALITY and was cute. Actually, in the live action Grinch, that whole fiasco where the kids bullied him is used to explain why the Grinch hated the _Whos_ , not Christmas. The film actually stays true to people not knowing why he didn’t like Christmas, even as a baby he was biting the head off a Santa Clause plate. N-not that I’m defending this... dumpster fire of a movie, but it certainly does add more depth to Jim Carrey’s Grinch~

Bites the head off a Santa Clause plate, AND draws Santa and his Sled being hit by a rocket. I never noticed that, but you're right; the film IS faithful to the whole mystery of Grinch's hatred of Christmas. Netflix not only was able to remake a beloved Dr.seuss property (green eggs and ham) and were to recreate the non sensical that all Dr.seuss books took place in, they were able to incorporate not only funny but (GASP) smart writing, actual you know .... morals the THING DR.SEUSS IS KNOWN FOR !!! And not only that but they actually were able to make 13 episodes and each at about 30 minutes,with a second 10 episode season. And it keeps you engaged the entire time, and this grinch couldn’t keep us engaged for less than half the time the green eggs and ham sires did. Oh fun fact! Each episode is painfully hand drawn and has smooth and detailed animations, costing neflix 72 million for the first season, the budget for the grinch was 75 million. So in summary, yeah go watch it instead.

I grew up watching the live action and of course enjoyed it. To me it adds more character to the Grinch with Jim Carrey's performance. But this one just does a quick intro to the town and adding stupid thing's in it. Like the Grinch waking up, taking a shower and eating breakfast. Which isn't something worth watching but that's the point of going to the town. Just to get food. Thought he ate garbage or glass bottles. Live action presents how wonderful Christmas is and shows them rushing to get the gifts, than shows the Grinch in an interesting way. A way that you think wow this guy doesn't like getting bothered, don't wanna be on his bad side. The movie is well presented with the colours and lights but the acting and animation isn't good. Like I said Jim Carrey brought the Grinch to life and you can see he's grumpy and doesn't care attitude. Where as in this movie he's happy here and annoyed here. It doesn't balance out well. When we get into the "story" of Cindy and her mother it doesn't work well. I thought it would at first but no. Getting the "gang" together should tell that they really didn't care about a good story. If the characters aren't gonna change any part of the movie why have them at all? The movie was boring to begin with and if they had Jim Carrey back as the Grinch it would've been more tolerable to watch.

This also feels like an insult to Jim Carrey for how much mental anguish and physical exhaustion he went through to play this character and then they remake it by animation that could have been done in the first place....he trained with a CIA operative to withstand torture because of how awful that suit was.
