Did you know there was an indigenous population of the Canary Islands before the arrival of Spain? Some believe that they were the inhabitants of Atlantis. Who where they really and where did they go?This video is part one of the story about the Guanche people.

@@lukejayjackson9287 I recently also found out that I have Guanche Ancestry too. I think it might be because slaves were also brought there before going to the American continent and there was a lot of mixing going on. Some of the Guanches were also taken to the Americas as slaves too. There is another person who comment either on this video oe the second video who discovered she has Guanche Ancestry too. I wonder how many of us have Guanche Ancestry.

@رأيي , sorry to hear about your people's suffering. Were you talking to me? I am 0% Spanish. I carry no shame or blame for those atrocities, nor does anyone alive today. Ignorant, evil people who do wicked deeds carry the guilt for their own actions. Those people are all dead now. History is tragic, worldwide. Some of my ancestors were kidnapped from Africa and brutally enslaved for life in the new world; other ancestors were the very people who enslaved them and held them in bondage. I am not personally ashamed of that because I didn’t make those choices, but the consequences live on in society and cause pain to those whose ancestors were harmed. All we can do is make good choices in our own lives and find healing for ourselves. I wish you peace and good fortune.

DNA shows the Gaunches are related to the Berbers from North Africa. I also thought I heard that some of the Canary islands had different looking Guanches some were supposedly blonde with tanned or dark skin. There is also a tribe of Berbers in North Africa who are blonde blue eyed and fair skinned. I don't remember the name of the tribe (maybe you can find out more). Though, as you said, some Canary Islanders have the darker Berber type. The Guanche DNA survived through the maternal side since the Spainiards killed off most of the males in their battles. This sadly seems to be the case with most conquered indigenous people. What's weird is how they ended up on those islands is sort of a mystery since they supposedly didn't swim and there's no evidence of ship building. 🤔As you said not much is known about them and I love a good mystery! Thanks for the very interesting video.😊

Thanks and yes you're right! I did read something about there being blonde hair and blue eyed Guanches. I'm not sure if it could have been recessive traits among the group it's very difficult to know for sure. Also, you bring up an interesting question about how they even got to the Canary Islands In the first place!. I'm going to do more digging and see if I can find anything that might suggest how this happened. Like you, I too love a good mystery 😅❤️

The guanches are Amazighs known as "berbers" but we prefer to be called Amazighs because "Berbers" is a name given to us by all colonizers. Amazighs mean "the free people". We Amazighs (I'm from Algeria) suffered from many invasions and each colonizer tried to assimilate us to their culture and wipe out our very ancient identity but we survived in the mainland (North Africa, our DNA is still very native dominated (according to DNA tests), I've seen some people have 90% + North African blood which is rare to have such a homogenous population. Amazighs come in different skin colours (and hair, eyes colours) it is not an indication of a foreign origin whatsoever because in Algeria for example you can see all possible colours mediterranean brown, blond blue eyes, blacks, redheads etc this is due to the vast territory so there is a huge diversity in terms of landscapes, environment, skin types AND culture but it is all Amazighe ethnicity and culture and of course there will be different skin colours between an Algerian from the North which is typically mediterranean and an Algerian from the Sahara! Even though Canarian Amazighs (The Guanches) have been rather successfully assimilated by the Spanish Colonizers, the Amazigh culture and language is present everytwhere in North Africa so if you want to look for the original Guanches culture and language, check out the history of North African (pre islam), language and culture have obvisouly been influenced but the identity remains the same and we care so much about our identity because we have been through a lot (many colonisations, cultural oppression, and so on).

@@Kaisforeignadventures Hello, there. Canarian from Fuerteventura over here. Recently studied at a posgraduate class in Orientalism that we were the last survivors of Atlantis when it was this archipelago the last remaining piece of land after the flood. It is a myth that has been mentioned in numerous texts; even the Romans and many other humanists would suggest the location of the Atlantis on this part of the Macaronesia. However, we also have to consider that myths are not a contemporary invention, and most certainly that's it: a myth. Still, it is quite exciting to know what kind of legends were told at that time. P.S.: thanks for sharing. It's a controversial topic in the islands, considering we never properly studied the history of the Spanish colonization. It was only a few years ago that some institutions started calling for the central government's recognition on the commission of a genocide in the Canary islands. Thus why they prefer to ignore adding any of our own history to highschools educational curricula, contributing to our ignorance. Yeeeeeey
