The Guitar Gear Community will SURPRISE You

I uploaded over 160 videos to KZfaq in 2023 and what I learned about the gear community was... surprising to say the least. Every KZfaq Niche has its quirks but dude, guitar world needs to relax. I’m not sure there’s many other niches with an audience beyond concerned with how a piece of gear might make them sound 5-10% better. And spoiler alert: there is no piece of guitar gear that will make you a better guitarist. If you don’t know how to make it happen with the gear you have, buying more expensive stuff is not going to suddenly change that. But alas, the diehards will rage on.
In this video, I'm peeling back the curtain on what I learned through a year of posting guitar focused videos. I'll be sharing my surprising and outrageous experiences with the guitar gear community; Things like Tube Amps aren't Dead, If you have Strymon pedals (Mobius, Timeline, BigSky) you must be a worship guitarist, experience does not equal authority on KZfaq, why do people even bother watching a gear review if they've already made up their mind, can you trust KZfaqrs who are paid to review items, and perhaps most shocking, that some of the gear community is looking to discuss more than just the hardware.
Tube Amps Aren't Dead: In the LA sideman musician scene, everyone has moved to a modeling unit like a kemper, quad cortex, helix, etc. It's an expectation at this point. However, I wrongly assumed that the internet was aware of this and was overwhelmed by the Tube Amp purists who informed me that my experience was wrong, and no one was doing this. I had no idea that guitar guys had such strong opinions on amps vs. no amps.
Experience Does Not Equal Authority: This was maybe the most shocking revelation; real world experience means nothing to the audience on KZfaq. I assumed my background as a sideman who tours and has worked in the industry as a music director, playback tech, and musician would help me establish rapport with an audience. Wrong. It seems to be more about a connection with the person on screen: a consistent showing of personality and content that establishes authority on this platform.
You've Already Made Up Your Mind: Just a quick scroll through some of the hate comments on my channel shows me that you've already made up your mind. Some of you click on videos with opinions you don't agree with just to get riled up and take out your anger in the comment section. On the flip side, a large contingent of you seem to click on videos with the same opinion as yours to justify your position. At the end of the day, none of this matters. It's just guitar gear. Use what you like.
Can You Trust Paid KZfaqrs? I can't speak for everyone, but I'm surprised by the trend on KZfaq where gear channels are talking about not wanting to do paid reviews anymore. First off, I thought we all knew you should take paid advertising with a grain of salt, but seriously? I've only said yes to products I actually like and can get behind, and I feel most KZfaqrs operate the same way.
Maybe It's Not About Gear: Despite my experience with the crazy elements of guitar gear culture, guitar gear snobbery, and all that comes with it, I've also made some cool friendships through youtube and am inspired that so many of you enjoy engaging with confessional content: Am I Just A Worship Guitarist? The Problem With Guitar Culture? My Job Is Music Side Hustles Etc. I love engaging with you all in conversation about the realities of being a musician, building a career in music, and ultimately, the highs and lows of creative pursuits.

What’s Bailey’s favorite modeler?? Also I’d have to think really hard trying to remember if I’ve met an engineer that doesn’t prefer a modeler over an amp. And I certainly appreciate 1 less trip to the car and less frequent chiropractic visits

It's easier to buy a new piece of gear than practice and master your current gear. I'm not going to act like GAS isn't contagious and I'm not infected; however, people are wild haha. I just came onto the KZfaq scene recently and focus on the Tone Master Pro. I'm basically a Tone Master Bro and had the same experience you had lmao. But I have also built a strong community of some really good people. I am trying to stay away from just doing gear reviews, I hate the consumer lifestyle lmao. I'd rather focus on mastering what we have and showcasing my journey as a professional guitarist and music producer. Congrats on your successful year and I hope 2024 is your best yet!

You nailed this. This is a psychological phenomenon called confirmation bias and gear culture is definitely guilty of this, myself included.

The direct guitar recording chanel show clearly that price of gear doesn't matter. Otherwise a good 12" speaker with almost anything will sound good.

Great video. I think people should be more open-minded. Just because someone prefers one thing, doesn't make what someone else likes wrong. Bottom line is, use what you like and don't bash other people for what they like. It's a pretty simple concept. 😂

I think amps still work best for a lot of crappy gigs. Also… it’s very similar if you get into bicycling. you will endlessly hear people talk about how I need to spend 10x more for the component that is 1/8 of an ounce lighter.

1. With people agonising about modellers - they're expensive. I only really had 2kish to spend on something. Should I buy a quad cortex or a tube amp? Plugins satisfy me, but the latency as well as captures on the qc swung me over to the qc. I would love to have a tube amp too but with limited funds I couldn't. Studio cats in LA have both modellers and amps and aren't debating this because they have more money than me (not in all cases ofc) 2. Whether or not you ought to care or deliberate a lot seems to be dependent on how much money you have. If you have a bunch of cash, then ye chill. If you don't, it can be worth deliberating quite seriously and asking for ppls opinions, especially smaller youtubers' like yourself that aren't paid. But - I don't really know the demographic of your videos. Most boomers that love tube amps could probs afford to buy both tube amps and modellers. 3. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch - but I feel like one factor on modeller hate might be a sort of anxiety about the encroachment of digital technology on our world. One where we increasingly own less physical assets or connection to the physical world, where we're funnelled online instead, etc. more easily controlled by a tech Corp. Ofc, I don't think instagram making addictive social media feed algorithms has anything directly to do with a modeller. Modellers can even save us money and physical gear doesn't seem to be going away. You can both enjoy modellers and be critical of the increasingly digital tech dominated world outside of guitar gear. But I can see how one might (especially if older) have a sort of nostalgia for the more physically-based gear world, and how this reflects society's kind of move into a dystopian internet controlled society. Also for future videos, it'd be cool to see you talk about or break down music you like, or do reaction vids to songs in different genres than the ones you're familiar with! I know this is a specifically different demographic probs than most of your vids are aimed towards, but I think it'd be cool to see. Also maybe a vid on how you tackle worship improv or other such stuff to do with worship music genre conventions - I'm not Christian but really dig sorta simplicity and almost post-rock influence it sounds like at times of CCM, so getting some more insight and context into that culture would be cool (beyond the strymon jokes, which I still find rly funny for some reason tho I see how it could be annoying to get share for it lmao)

@@JustinMuncy oh it's coming! I'm just waiting on a set of vintage russian tubes for my 3 100w marshall heads that were handwired by Marshall himself so I can run a true LCR mix which is super important obviously. When I run my dual stacked klons into my polymorphgender bit-obliterator it goes into 3 fulltone tube tape echos so I really can't make the video with anything less than 3 100w amps completely dimed or it just doesn't get the right sound. Listen, you may have years of the most hands on, valuable experience humanly possibly on the subject matter but I'm older than you and met eric clapton one time so I can't be wrong theres no way.
