Frosty the snowman
was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal
Frosty the snowman
is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow but the children know
How he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in
That old top hat they found
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around
Oh, Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me
Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Look at Frosty go
Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Over the hills of snow
Ooh Frosty the snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said, "Let's run and we'll have some fun
Now before I melt away."
Down to the village
With a broomstick in his hand
Running here and there all around the square
Saying "catch me if you can!"
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler "Stop!"
Oh, Frosty the snowman
Had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye, saying
"Don't you cry, I'll be back again someday."

One of my Aunts once told me that stories like these that came to popularity when she was a kid were meant to remind kids that death is just a part of life, a Memento Mori, so to speak. She made the point that we sugar-coat things a lot these days and kids need to understand this as well. My parents always showed "The Snowman" to my bother and me every Christmas; it is both the most beautiful and sad Christmas special ever made.

The animated story is adorable... and it also adds a whole new layer of horrible sadness! EDITED TO ADD: It's also popular as a children's Christmas story book. One of the most popular versions came out at the same time at the song. My parents read it to me as a little kid in the 80s and 90s. I can still picture some of the illustrations. To be fair, according to the Ryanverse-lore, snowmen were originally created after the image of paralysis demons in order to please them and to trap them in a physical form. The melting of the snowman might be intended to destroy the demon, that is trapped inside.

I’ve always thought the movie was horrifying. When he gets locked in the greenhouse, he slowly melts, then we cut to him as a puddle with the girl crying. But she’s not crying because her friend is dead, she’s traumatized at having watched a sentient being slowly deform before her and at some point he could no longer speak, and she was helpless to stop it.

Up until now the only part of it I thought was scary was that they left the little girl all alone on the roof at the end of the TV special. I was really worried for her as a kid. My dad had to assure me that her dad would have come outside with a ladder instantly after the credits rolled. And then I asked him how he knew the dad had a ladder, and he said, "All dads have ladders," which just horrified me more because *WE* didn't have a ladder. But now I have all this to worry about, too, so thanks for that.

Frosty The Snowman was written by two songwriters named Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson in 1950. It’s kind of interesting how we usually think of these old Christmas songs as if they’re folk music, yet in reality, they were written relatively recently by very much known artists.
@screwyourhandle
@screwyourhandle Жыл бұрын
Well I get what you mean, but I've never heard of Walter Rollins or Steve Nelson, and 1950 was 72 years ago. Most Christmas carols I've heard are from the 19th or 20th centuries. I guess some people think they are hundreds of years old, but if you pay attention, most of them don't sound like it.
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 Жыл бұрын
@@screwyourhandle I’ve always felt as though they’ve kind of always been there. They’ve been passed around and covered so much, you never really think of some guy as having written them. The fact that you haven’t heard of the writers, and that I had to look them up says alot. Even songs that are about as old, people know who they’re by usually. People think of songs by The Beatles as being by The Beatles, but no one name comes to anybody’s mind when Frosty The Snowman was mentioned. In that way, these songs are sort of thought of as folk music, even if they totally aren’t. Also, 1950 wasn’t that long ago. It’s closer to the present than almost all of time, they had pretty much all of the hallmarks of what we consider “modernity” (cars, electricity, TV), and there are still tons of people who were literally alive in 1950.
@Axterix13
@Axterix13 Жыл бұрын
I think that has more to do with so many different people singing the songs than anything else. And, well, most songs from the same time as the Beatles, most people won't know who sang them, and that's without there being a ton of covers. Heck, that applies to songs from the 1970s, when talking to people who were alive during that time. Typically when I bring up Golden Earring, people will have no clue who they are. If I mention that they sang "Radar Love", they still won't have a clue. And if I play the song, then, and only then, they might know it. And that's for a band that did stadium tours in the US back in the day, with multiple songs that hit the charts. Basically, yeah, Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and so on, well remembered. Everyone else, well, the oldies station plays stuff from the 1980s/1990s now, not from the 1950s and 1960s. Also worth noting that today's pop music, a surprising amount of it is written by a select few people, yet we associate with the artists who perform it, and not the writers.
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 Жыл бұрын
@@Axterix13 Frosty was not written by the performer either. That’s been going on forever. Still, you would probably still know it by the performer, but no one ever does. Like you said, it’s probably just the fact that everyone has fucking performed, so no one knows what it’s from.
