Thanks Peter. I have only had one Japanese whisky, which is the Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky. I really enjoy this one. For me it is a pleasant change from bourbon. I find it light and delicate, but with nice notes. Cheers!

I think the delicate note is typical in Japanese whisky. At least for me.

Good review! FYI, I’m in Chicago, IL, where the liquor was imported according to the information on the back of the box. Here Hakushu 12 years costs $179.99 before tax.

$300 hurts! I don't even think this bottle is a $175.00 bottle. It is still good, but should be a sub $100 bottle IMO. Cheers!

Great review Peter! Hakushu might be my favorite Japanese distillery. I get a hint of a Campbelltown funk in it. Yoichi is also great.

Agreed. I paid about $150 for my bottle and I don’t think I would replace it…..beautiful stuff but I can get a Kilkerran 12 for less than $150 and have a more full flavored experience.

That is what I thought I read, but it has been a while since I did any research on Japanese whisky. I can't remember where I read it, but I think I read it directly from an article from Suntory or their master blender.

Really? You would pay $300. Wow. I think that's a crazy price I figured I have not reviewed a Japanese whisky in a while so I bought it, but I don't think I would have shelled out that amount of money if I did not have a channel. Cheers!

@@whiskeyisajourney Joel and I were talking later last night after watching your video and I said, "What was I thinking?!!" He has said the same thing as you. The last time I bought a Hakushu it was about $185 and I was okay with that. I did enjoy it a lot but on reflection and teasing from Joel!! - I agreed $300 is insane and there are better Japanese whisky expressions that have far better value! Lol! Cheers Peter!! 🙂

Prepandemic I got these for $78 each. At my local Total Wine these are now at least 160 when they come in. No way Peter is right. Go for the Nikka offerings for an authentic Japanese whisky.

300 bills is a no go and only 43abv you'd think they could go cask for that kinda cash. I do like Japanese whiskey but the ones I drink are 70-90. Even my Scotland scotch are under 150.

Excellent review Peter. I was considering getting this, and even though it’s not as expensive where I live compared to what you had to pay for it, man, I just don’t feel like it’s worth the $$. Especially considering there’s so many great (Japanese) alternatives to be had for like 1/2, 1/3th of the price… Keep up the great content 👍

@@whiskeyisajourney Would you say Yamazaki 12 is better than this, not considering price?
@whiskeyisajourney
@whiskeyisajourney Ай бұрын
Yes. I think the Yamazaki is better. I also think the Yoichi is better and it's a better comparison because of the peated note found in both. I have both match ups in my blind sample pool.
@Whiskynewspaper
@Whiskynewspaper Ай бұрын
Lovely video. Subscribed. My only issue is that you said this is almost the same thing in comparison to the Yamazaki 12. My take is they're completely different. Could you elaborate further please? Thanks.
@whiskeyisajourney
@whiskeyisajourney Ай бұрын
With the exception of the peated notes I think they are both clean and crips with vanilla and citrous. I have the Yamazaki and this in my blind sample pool. So eventually it will be put to the test.

At $80 here in SoCal, the NIKKA YOICHI is without a doubt the better deal (compared to $240 for the Hakushu 12) if looking for a moderately peated Japanese single malt. By the same logic, Nikka Miyagikyo is my choice over the prohibitively priced Suntory Yamazaki 12.
@whiskeyisajourney
@whiskeyisajourney Ай бұрын
I agree. Yoichi is a very good bottle for the price and I would get it over this. I did not catch the price, but I did see the Yoichi 12 at a Total Wine this weekend while I was over there. I think is was in the Cucamonga store.

Well Japanese whisky is made in the scotch style so I would have to say yes to an extent. Hopefully, with the new guidelines set for distilleries in Japan we will get a more true Japanese style expression or at least be more transparent as to what is in the bottle.
