Regarding changelings, there’s a modern interpretation that myths surrounding changelings were based on babies with developmental disorders/disabilities such as autism, savant syndrome, Down syndrome, etc. A fairly common response from parents who learn that their children have these conditions is rejection of the child and sometimes even a denial that the child is even theirs.

It really makes sense that this is how they would react, the description of a changeling has a lot of the same traits and even now parents will react similarly. Except they know it’s autism “taking away” their perfect child or whatever

Despite all of the stupid decisions he made, the father was the ultimate G in this film. Even though he was losing his own humanity from the fungal infection and slowly turning into a Hallow, he tried to protect his family through and through, and even managed to save his wife a lifetime of suffering and despair just going off of a hunch. Horror Father of the Year.

Interesting thing I learned recently about fungus is that they are responsible for the oldest symbiotic relationship on Earth as the majority of plant root systems are in fact actually fungal systems that connect plants together allowing them to share resources with each other and communicate information. The trees and other plants that are more Adept at gaining energy from the Sun share their resources with the fungal root systems that are better at gaining nutrients from the soil and they trade. Also the connection between the plants due to the fungal root system allows the various plants to communicate and allocate resources to keep the overall ecosystem flourishing. An example of this would be a larger older tree sharing its nutrients with younger trees around it through this root system so that they can grow

@@poop464 not really. In the case of our bodies we are a single organism made up of smaller cells that are all part of the same species and share genetic code working to preserve a single body. In the case of fungus and plant communication it is multiple separate species with their own genetic codes communicating with each other for the preservation of an overall ecosystem made up of multiple separate life-forms. They may be similar in functionality but they are two very different systems. Our cells are essentially clones of a single-cell each repurposed for a specific functionality whereas a forest is multiple separate species cooperating

The legends of changelings were probably how people coped with children that were born with malformations or other things, and they would go heron and get rid of the offspring, but they would come up with an excuse for their guilt by convincing themselves that it was a changeling and not their child.

Being a proud Irish man myself, I can confirm that we in fact have several such chants, being the horribly patriotic bunch that we are. The more common ones, all as Gaeilge, are; "Erin Go Bragh (Ireland forever)", "Faugh a Ballagh (clear the way)" and "Tiocfaidh ár lá (our day will come)". Also, cheers for the Sinn Féin picture in this, I got a good laugh out of it. Also also, thank you for covering this one. It's always good to see someone with your reach covering films produced in Ireland. Even more so when they draw on our native culture and heritage. Keep up the good work.

This is less likely to do with reality, and using Fae mythology for the premise. Hence the Iron bars, iron is common as Far or fairy repellent, while Silver is the mineral considered to be pure and the reason it is used against Evil.

Great video! Just one note: When the police officer is asked if he believes in the local Irish folklore and remarks that he is from the North that has way worse things, based on my interactions with many people from there I believe this is a joke, specifically about "The Troubles", i.e. the British occupation and horrible ethnic conflicts that have resulted over the centuries and up to recent decades. They tend to have a very dark humour about the troubles and often reference it, especially in relation to their difference from residents of the Republic of Ireland. Due to dilution of Irish folklore up north by English culture and very real life problems they have faced recently they tend to have a more cynical culture or worldview. In other words, I believe he was saying: "We kinda stopped worrying about fairies when bombs and street battles were our daily reality" It's a clever joke and one I can easily imagine someone from Belfast making off hand

I think some of the point behind the kelpie horse was to scare kids away from approaching horses they don't know. If not to make sure the horse wasn't a threat, then to have them avoid being threatened by nobles/guards/etc for messing with their horse. Still some creepy cool stories on evil horses.

@ExtrnalSorce2 No, it paralyzed people, and they would sink into the fungus that covered a whole field. Pretty fun episode. It fed them a hallucination so they wouldn't fight being digested slowly. In the hallucinations, you would see glimpes into the digestive fluid that covered them, so that might be what you were thinking.

This horror movie has stayed with me since I first saw it like 5 years ago. The ending left me with a very similar feeling that both Annihilation and Unicorn Wars did, an almost eldritch “enemy” that lies in something as inherently peaceful as nature.

I'm sad you didn't mention that "changelings" were often just neurodiverse (Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and a whole lotta others) children. The "signs" of them being Changelings were just the children's natural urges and instincts.

Recently watched a movie about changelings that discussed the reason for the superstitions (Daisy Chain). It brought up how it was also likely to be about parents who couldn't bond with their child for whatever reason. So a woman with postpartum depression/psychosis wouldn't have her illness taken care of, but would instead have the town help her burn her baby to death on Halloween. Also could have been children who had attachment disorders, which were probably not particularly rare back in the day when people didn't necessarily want all their kids and there wasn't really any law to tell them they had to do it anyway. children with attachment disorders can act out in very violent ways if not given proper psych treatment. Seems like there are lots of reasons for changeling myths. All very, very sad for kids and parents alike.

Yeah, I remember making the autism and changeling connection when I was a kid. The thing about how 'my child seemed to suddenly change' (as they start lagging behind in hitting developmental milestones) and especially the voracious appetite were what made it click for me. My eldest brother will literally make himself sick eating because he just doesn't understand that he should stop.

Why should he? You just made up your own theories, because you like it. There is no evidence for or against changelings, since they were reported in pre-modern era. None of the symptoms you mentioned were then researched.

I really enjoyed this movie, it relied more on tension than on jump scares, and those it did have worked well enough. I also enjoy that the characters aren't assholes, like so many other horror movies (except Colm, but he's there to be a false antagonist, so its fine). And of course, the hallow are really creepy, and scientifically interesting. Good movie, good video.

Antagonists aren’t really ‘bad guys’ So let’s do this. You’re playing a sports game and the person preventing you from winning is this guy who is pushing you to the ‘hey if I get down again I can’t do anything and I lose’ So now you have to deal with other characters trying to be number 1. While this is happening there is a man who is trying to take over the world. Now… who is the antagonist? Not the man trying to take over the world. Remember Goblin slayer? Demon lords, monster gods and so on are just in the background being taken out while Goblins are ignored because more defenses areas see them as a low risk… which is true if that was just them alone but add in other monsters and it becomes a problem doubled my even more problems. Now we do see something happen. His daughter is gone because of the actions of the main characters and the town is attacked it seems: remember the attack on the home? Their house was just the least defended one.

@@silent_stalker3687 I'm fully aware being a bad person has nothing to do with being an antagonist. As you say, the antagonist is the character that stands in the way of the protagonist's goal. In this movie the goal is at first to research the forest, and then to survive, and then to specifically save the (real) baby. And with all those, the Hallow are the antagonists, not Colm. My point was that early on the movie makes it *look* like Colm could be an antagonist, by seemingly standing in the way of researching the forest. And while being a bad guy isn't a necessity for being an antagonist, it is often a result of it. My point then was simply that I was ok with Colm being a "bad guy" because it served the plot, by making the audience associating him with antagonists, even though he actually isn't one (unlike many other horror movies, that make every character except "the nice one" assholes for no reason other then for the share-holders to feel that its a safer movie to invest in because they're not killing good people... which is really dumb and is in fact why at least a few big (ish) horror movies had to make everyone assholes)

One thing that I really like about this movie is the twist at the end, Where most horror movie will depict men, more often than not, sacrificing themselves for their lovers/family, this movie showed me something similar but different. Not that, like other horror movies, the men die protecting the women and children, but the women and children escape basically on their own without the mans help, this movie showed how much the man suffered and sacrificed in order to protect his family.

I bought this movie in what I assume is special edition packaging because no one spends that much time on the presentation of a movie anymore. The inside sleeve was full of art which in conjunction with the box sleeve that had an opening cover showed Celtic art of the woods

Bit of a strange one, but might I suggest looking into the Hive Mind present in the movie Avatar? Although its never directly stated in the first film, its heavily implied that there's some sort of super-organism influencing both the local tribes, as well as upon connection with the weird hair tentacle things, feral wildlife. Near the end of the movie, all the tribes and wildlife which had previously fought for hundreds of years miraculously begin working together to eliminate the human workers and mercenaries operating there, specifically because they were destroying various "hubs" for the large trees, AKA the Hive Mind.

In that final jumpscare the hollow had glowing blue dots in their eyes. Because of the whole pineal gland thing you talked about, that doesn't make any sense whatsoever for the fungus in its current form specifically, implying that the fungus somehow significantly changes after the log scene

Reminded me more of "eyeshine" or tepeda luscidum that nocturnal predators have, basically a mirror in the eye that helps amplify available light. Given the need for visual processing, but a fear of light, something that makes a host make do with the night-time light would be useful, especially for ambush.

It's amazing to me, I only learned about the mountains recently but my family were some Scots who fled after the Jacobite Rebellion... If ANYbody in your clan participated, you were legitimate targets to kill.... so some who remained of our clan fled to Ulster, Irene-Land and then wound up on a ship to North Carolina. Apparently stepped off the boat, walked into the mountains and went "Aye... this is close to home."

This has to be the most interesting movie overview I have ever watched in my entire life. I can say that with not a single doubt in my mind. The overview and amazing information provided by the narrator was so fantastic and interesting I cannot understand how much I enjoyed this video. I have never seen your stuff before but I am instantly subscribing and watching everything you have I love the information dumps and what you know. Everything from geology of mountain formations across continental drift, personal opinions on specific truck manufacturing, and then in depth cellular biology. All presented in a fast funny way. You have to be the king of presentation.

Ah yes, let's move into a forest that screams Fae forest. I'm from the US and even I know not to mess with the Fair Folk. If a local in an ancient forest region gave me a warning regarding strange stuff occurring, I'd likely laugh it off until the window was busted with no sign of what did it. I'd then give up and ask for advice regarding how to share the space with whatever caused the problem.

Its kind of a double edged sword. If you are cryptic, the wont understand and walk in with no idea what is coming. If you AREN'T cryptic and just openly state the problem, they just assume you are crazy and ignore the warning. Its really a lose lose to try to warn people away from horror movie settings.

Like viruses aren't themselves animals, but the physical connection to the aspect of death. Like how our body is and is controlled by cells and represent life, what if viruses are the cells of death. IDK. I'm not good at world building/concept building.

i would like to take this time to point out that those logs at the end, depending on their purpose would likely be shaved down and chemical/head treated. the odds of that fungus spreading may not be 0, but it's not all that high if the destination is under a days' trip away.

The Appalachian mts being the same as what is found in the movie's local reminds me of how Newfoundland/Labrador/Nova Scotia all look like they used to belong to the Shetland Islands/Ireland/Scotland. It was like when the continents split, they went "welp, I wanna go with North America" while the UK is like "noooo, come baaack!" lol

Interesting theory I have regarding viruses is that they are not living in the traditional sense but are more like automated machines. My theory for their origins is that viruses are like the remnants of a cells dna. It could have been a mutation that allowed itself to continue long after the cell it was apart of died and then began to replicate itself using other cells. It's almost like how cancer cells begin to multiply on their own and grow out of control when a mutation occurs. It would make sense as it seems viruses, at least as of now, have only been found on Earth so it would have to have originated from life in some way, even if it isnt actually alive itself

Oh, the immune system is well aware that we have eyes. I'd know that it knows, given that I'm one of the rare few that randomly has Uveitis- which is a hoot and holler! Sunlight, light in general, darkness.. it all just hurts. Luckily, no flare up this year so that's worth and shot and a half! Also, a Dragon Ball Z Abridged reference? Meanwhile, I watched an awesome TV show called "The strain" few years ago with awesome cast and Guillermo del Toro one of the creators. I could not stop thinking about the connection of vampires to biology, and I think it is a good suggestion for you as well. Good job on your vids and hope to see more!
