In the ancient stories of man, exists an animal that according to folk lore, was somewhat friendly but stupid. However, reality is typically not as nice. This species of animal is large, stupid, and potentially a man eater as well. Scooping up humans at any opportunity, they will absolutely consume human flesh. To deal with this, hunters are employed to take them down should they leave their territory. This arrangement was long lasting and usually not too over the top. But one day, many being leaving their usual range and encroaching on human territory. So what's happened? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

I wonder if giant squids used to more frequently attack ships because they appeared to be like a dying whale, slapping the water with oars and just floating mostly, whereas modern ships have loud, horrifying engines that scare them off.

Also most giant squids that come to the surface do so out of age, or rather they're having a harder time staying deep underwater.(I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong please) And a dying whale like you said would be easy pickings for an aging giant squid. They'd be desperate for any food they could catch.

@@ArlanKelsthe only colossal squids that have been found on the surface were all dead. They don’t surface unless they are basically dead and the lack of pressure on the surface is bad for them. Also giant squids and colossal squids are different species. Only the colossal squid is large enough to attack ships like the kraken is depicted to do

As a Norwegian it is pretty cool seeing someone go over all this. The Trolls have been part of our folklore as far back as the ancient sagas. You got all the names pretty spot on if I am honest. Jotnar though is kind of a more englishfied version, Jotun or Jotne is the local term for the big ones. Also the area they were in is called Jotunheimen, or the Jotun's home, it is a large national park of sorts covering the mountain and valleys in the area.

Back in the Viking age not all Trolls were humanoid. There were Troll animals as well. For example, if you burned a Troll and a bull or pig ingested the ashes, it could be considered a Troll afterwards. Troll-bull. It almost worked kind of like an infection. Crazy.

One of the coolest examples of finding new species unexpectedly was a few years ago. Right in NYC they found a new species of frog that'd been there the entire time and nobody realized it. So while I don't think cryptids as we think of them exist, it's 100% reasonable to expect some very freaky and some very mundane discoveries still.

i understand what you're trying to say with "cryptids as we think of them", you mean the most popular/infamous ones, but the thing is that the term 'cryptid' covers a wide range of possible creatures, from real living animals existing far outside their native range (english big cats) to real extinct animals (tasmanian tiger sightings, coelacanths) to possible undiscovered species (colossal squid) to wild nonsense fantasy shit like mermaids and mongolian death worms. Coelacanths and colossal squid are great examples of things that _used_ to be considered cryptids, and then had their existence documented by science and are now considered just mundane animals.

to be fair, i think large terrestial criptids arent neccesarly true - we know about couple of lynxes over entire area of balkans, for example - i doubt something large like bigfoot would be able to hide itself from scientific recognition etc

I didn't expect the troll bite to give him rabies. Somehow I expected it to turn him into a troll. In a surreal film where trolls exist and can smell a specific type of person, it's grounding to know they are also vulnerable to diseases.

The trolls are supposed to be animals and natural, their existence is just kept secret. Them being able to smell christian blood is part of the folklore and stems from the belief that people posessed by demons would smell like demons, non-christians would smell bad, christians would smell normal/good and especially holy people would smell amazing. So really it's humans that are strange and smell differently depending on belief, and the trolls which can live for 1000's of years likely associate the smell with being hunted by early christians. So other animals like dogs and cats, could probably also recognise the difference in smell, but they don't care. Why christians smell different could be from various reasons. It could be that faith changes hormones in the body, but then it likely would also impact muslims and people of other faiths, which it doesn't seem to do. It could be something from going to church specifically, and that the smell lingers-- but not all christians actually go to church. In Norwegian the saying is that trolls can smell "christian mens blood", which could mean christians in general or it could be only christian/religious men specifically-- which means that muslim men might actually smell the same, but Malika is a woman so she doesn't smell that way. That would also work with the early christians hunting trolls theory, since that would primarily be done by men. Am I spending way too much time contemplating this over a movie that came out 13 years ago? Yes. Do I regret it? No.

Honestly, figuring out to work within the bounds of the square cube law is such a fun puzzle. Dragons are a million times more awesome when you've had to fight to make them function under the prison of physics.

They're just dinosaurs with chemical flamethrowers in their mouths, that puzzle was solved in the 90's.. they really aren't that fun under the square cube law. The fun stuff is when you get into the lesser known creatures like penanggalan or dullahan. Try to figure out the physics of a creature that has two separate body parts/systems that function in conjunction with one another.

It's when they're portrayed as powerful, magical beings with a far greater intellect than humans could even imagine to possess, practically eldritch gods in their own right. The square cube law can be really messed with if you take that magical prowess into consideration.

The way to work around the square cube law is to just make everything else smaller. For example, imagine everything is the same, but everything is 1/100 the size. Now, you can create dragons the size of buildings, but in reality, they are 2 feet tall.

Slight correction on the European Tetanus guidelines: it's true that we don't booster everybody after a 10-year period, but if you get an injury that requires medical attention (like stitches) and it has been >10 years since your last tetanus-shot, you will get a booster there and then. Every GP-practice or ER carries them.

if a sickness is already within you a booster will do literally nothing to help it's not a 'cure' it's a sample of dead viral or bacterial matter to allow your body to build antibodies with, if you're already infected with something then your body will already be building antibodies for it rabies vaccines are an exception because without the shot your body will not actually know to fight it off before it's already too late but this is primarily due to the location of infection and rabies basically being sneaky

Can confirm the U.S. is kinda similar. While we should get a tetanus shot once every ten years, in my 30 years of living, it's not really ever been... mentioned by doctors. The only times I've gotten my boosters are when I suddenly, accidentally get a nail or rusty object through the foot and the doctor is like "Oh, shit. You need your tetanus shot. No better time than now. You're getting it now. Stay in that seat." In other news, I would greatly prefer a nail through the foot to a bite. Nails through foot (not hitting bone) only hurt for a couple minutes and barely bleed. Bites just fucking suck, man. They stay itchy for like a month.

As a norwegian who loves when myths are re-imagined to fit in our modern world, I love this movie. And I love that its getting some attention from you here so that more people might go watch it. Its by far my favorite found footage movie. Its a fairly small movie all things considered, but it does so much with what it had to work with. And I love that while the scientific reasonings might not be perfect, they're more or less believable.

When you talked about armor and the effects of taking a hit it made me think of the energy transfer that a body would experience when wearing body armor and taking a hit. I don’t know if you’re aware of the Demolition Ranch channel, but today he tested an armor plate that can stop an AP 50 BMG and the effects on the body after taking that shot. It’s almost not worth even wearing lol, but I would recommend watching that episode

I can imagine why you say it was almost not worth wearing that armor. Just to stop that caliber of round the armor would be very heavy. Either from sheer thickness or from all the layers designed to stop such a projectile. Next...well, most people wouldn't consider the fact armor does not magically stop the kinetic energy of the blow. Even if the projectile does get stopped before penetrating you it also is still gonna transfer that energy to you. Even regular handgun ammo can feel like getting punch hard when wearing bullet proof vests. So I can not imagine the sheer devastation the round in question would still do...must be like getting hit by a truck. So your organs are not gonna in good shape after that. Bruised and broken bones, internal hemorages from tears to any of your soft bits exposed to that energy, and the sheer shock from the blow. Pretty sure you could easily still die.

Believe it or not the armor isn’t really that heavy and it actually stopped the black tip. However the ballistic dummy labs target it was on suffered a ruptured liver, 6 broken ribs, a fractured sternum and the whiplash of taking that energy ripped open the neck. I already didn’t think it was a survivable condition but it was cool to find out what would happen. I’m not sure who would want to actually wear that armor because the thickness looked to be at least 4 inches, and the only real impressive thing it did was stop a 300 Win Mag black tip, although you might die from spawling

@@wetmemedaddy5065it’s not steel armor that is used to stop 50bmg so no spall. Also the spall of just a 5.56 round is easily lethal hence why steel armor sucks and should only be used as a last resort

19:23 when you talk about getting jacked up by serious force a lot of times it does depend on the person, as a veteran who’s been in 2 IED attacks I’ve seen concussions, broken vertebrae, nearly lost manhood, bleeding from the ears and even ruptured/detached retina in the same truck. As a Norwegian, two things; first, thanks for reviewing and analyzing this film! It's one of my favourites with one of my all-time favourite, mostly realistic depictions/rationializations of trolls, and André Øvredal is a great director in my opinion. Second, your pronunciatons of Norwegian/Scandic words were somewhat mixed but mostly pretty good for a non-native speaker who got back from a 13 hour drive.

I used to watch this movie religiously back in the day, like at least once a month, then I suddenly stopped and forgot about it for the longest time. Then I stumbled upon it once more after many years and... It's not as great as I remembered it to be, it's pretty silly. But I reminded myself why I enjoyed it so much; as someone who loves mountains and forests, this movie really got my imagination going while going on hikes and scouting through trees to look for evidence of trolls wandering around. It's a weird, little movie but I still love it. Nostalgia is hell of a drug.

Love this movie. For anyone looking for other folklore-inspired films, check out Thale; it is about Hulder in Scandinavia. Regarding tetanus and related bacterial infections: When I was in college, my microbiology professor showed us a segment on something called phage therapy. Basically, areas that are too poor for or for whatever reason cannot provide antibiotics to patients sometimes utilize bacteriophage viruses to treat various infections, including MRSA. It was remarkably effective and very interesting, if a bit haphazard.

Man, you've made my week! My best friend that went missing in 2013 showed me this movie. It was my first time ever seeing it and I fully understood on the first viewing why he loved it so much. His birthday was yesterday so getting to see this has just really made a shitty week into an awesome. I know of someone who had a infection in the chest and was hospitalized pretty much for months. Nothing worked, untill they injected Phages and treated him with antibiotics at the same time. The bacteria was unable to adapt to both at the same time and he was healed.

I think the best part about the movie was speculating what is going on with Thomas, is he going to turn into a troll or something? The usual weird "fantastic diseases" and then it just turns out to be old mundane rabies. Despite being about such a fantastical topic such as trolls, the movie does feel like a weird nature documentary in the end. Kinda shame there aren't documentary style movies or series about fantastical beasts etc.

I randomly came across this movie a number of years ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I watch it maybe once a year and it never fails to get old. Is just such a unique subject for a movie, and personally, I think very well done. When I saw the movie "Troll" coming out in 2022, I was pretty excited, but so terribly let down. It wasn't bad, but definitely didn't live up to Troll Hunter. Thank you for doing such an amazing movie! I personally love how much you go into the synopsis of each movie because a lot of these movies I won't watch, normally because they're kind of scary and I hate horror movies. However, I'm also intrigued by your explanations of the monsters. 😂

Nice to see a classic covered. What amused me is that being a Troll Hunter sounds like a fairly sweet gig...but Hans is the epitome of the guy who's been in the same job for so long he just hates everything about it: the hours are awful, the pay is crap, and there's a good chance the government will make you wipe out entire clans of Trolls - including children and pregnant females - just so they can build a highway. No wonder he just walks off into the wilderness by himself at the end, he's checked out by that stage. The part where they're running from the three-headed troll in the forest at night always gave me a serious case of the willies.

The problem with the Milwaukee protocol is it has worked a single time and then never again. Even with all the revisions trying to get it to work again it is still worked once in 2004 and has never been replicated to this day.

I remember watching footage of enormous squid attacking a small group of divers. There might have only been two of them. They were grabbing them and pulling them into the deep. One of the divers barely escaped with his life. If I hadn't seen the footage myself I probably would be skeptical, so I totally understand people reading this pressing X. There was something particularly horrifying about Cthulhuesq monsters grabbing a hold of a man and then dragging him down into the infinite black.

I would love for you to cover, even on Roanoke tails, these creatures from stories of Lovecraft’s. The Shadow Over Insmith featuring the Deep Ones, the Whisperer in Darkness featuring the Migo, At the Mountains of Madness featuring the Star Spawn and the dreaded Showgoth. Also the Color Out of Space featuring the Color. All of these have a very robust biological description for nearly each creature. In the mountains of madnesses, as the two explorers of the Eldridge ruins read the transcription, they realize even these creatures labeled entities like Cthulhu and his young(lower even than aza and narl) as even more utterly alien in comparisons to our own differences from the old ones themselves. Basically saying well humans are not from my planet but at least humans are from my galaxy. Great writer. The bipedal fish, the deep ones, with their ability to interbreed with humans, and most likely have the gene for gigantism, and DNA regulation like lobsters to live forever, unless harmed or otherwise. the ultimate video and challenge to do on Lovecraft would be the Color Out of Space, which was a Lovecrafts intention to make a life so abstract in explanation. Elijah Woods made a good decision making that his first film out of the mythos. Its difference stands out the most among his other creations. A truly different life form, that not any creature from your covers have come close to. Except for annihilation because they ripped it off.

Dead Space from 1991 is a interesting movie about a virus or parasite (can't remember which) was created to fight and counter a epidemic going on around the galaxy but the experiment went wrong leaving a mercenary and his robot with a group of scientists to try and take it out, it's pretty old but the science behind is something you'd probably be interested in

Fun story: In college I attended an Orphan’s Thanksgiving (students who couldn’t go home to family for the holiday, hosted as a giant pot luck). We couldn’t decide what to watch after and few of us were football fans. After a lot of arguing, one guy made the executive decision to watch this. Super random but we all loved it. Good times.

Watched this movie a lot when I was a teen, as a follower of Christ the idea of Trolls being attracted to my blood was always a bit chilling. Made them seem closer to Demons than anything from our world. Still, cool subject for you to cover.

Thanks for the constant content, Roanoke. I love listening to your scientific breakdowns while I work. Question, not about the square cube law, but about reaction times in a creature that massive: Could light-based nerves serve to convey information faster than the normal setup? Basically fiber-optics instead of standard wiring? I am a massive fan of Kaiju movies and am constantly trying to come up with ways to explain them scientifically. (as much as one can) My latest bugbear is figuring out why there isn't a noticeable delay between them being hit in an extremity and their reactions. With normal nerves it seems like there would be a bit of lag when the "stubbed my toe" signal has to travel 400ft to reach the brain. Also would dovetail with how 90% of modern Kaiju are bioluminescent. Keep up the awesome work!

@Roanoke hi, I live in Switzerland and had my Tetanus booster 3 or 4 years ago. The doctor told me that now the booster lasts 20 years. I was born in Italy and booster for tetanus vaccine is mandatory every 10 years. So we indeed do the boosters. Cheers!
