One problem, upbeat girls on a bed while down beat girls at a table. To be truly scientific both groups would assess the videos in the same environment. Being sat at a table can make you more analytical while being sat on a bed can make you less analytical or less critical. To properly assess this there needs to be a larger base for the study and equal surroundings for both with the character of the man being the only variable.

They manipulated the test by using dark and bright light. Dark colors are viewed more badly and therefore also he seems worse

I guess im weird cause I prefer the more serious one over the excited one. The serious one got to the point on what he wants, the excited one seemed like he was joking around. depends on what u are looking for, everyone is different.

This isn't a controlled experiment. The upbeat group sat closely on a bed like they were pals at a slumber party. The downbeat group sat like strangers around a table like they're colleagues at a business mtg.

Why did they create such a loaded experement? It was clearly set up to only have one possible outcome, The group with happy Dan were taken to a comfortable environment with the word love written in it, as well as being asked the question in a positive tone. meanwhile the girls with sad Dan were taken into a room with upright chairs and a plain table which is a much more somber looking room. This would have created a much different impression on each group and therefore would change the outcomes.

And here I thought it was going to be a video about how playing Halo helps attract women :D

This wasn't even a real experiment, just a fake one to reaffirm an existing idea.

The Halo Effect is a part of our everyday judgment. We tend to be blinded by a positive aspect of a person's characteristic verses being more aware of the negative. Honestly, I feel that the Halo Effect influences the lasting of poor relationships. Instead of getting out of the relationship, we end of staying because of that one quality that we find attractive.

Moral of the story: It's not what you say, yet how you say it.

Why were they seated so differently though? I'm sure that making the first group sit in a cozy bed and the other in a more formal looking sitting orientation must have made some kind of subconscious difference as well.

It's really interesting how much of an influence first impressions have on us, and how much a simple change in tone of our voice can actually change the judgments others have about us.

I disagree with the findings of your experiment. Tone and body language can drastically change the meaning of words (think clever joke vs tactless remark) so even though he's "saying the same thing," the message conveyed is actually quite different; in the end, he's not really saying the same thing. I guess I am saying I enjoyed the introduction to the video and agreed with the premise behind it, but I do not feel that your experiment actually tests what you claim to be testing for.

The Hale Effect really makes me think about first impressions and how I may have made some bad first impressions to some people because of my mood at the time, but also how I have based others off of their impressions. The next time I meet someone or hear someone speak, I will try and focus more on the words and not their manner.

This was more of a corollary than an introduction to a new concept, secondly this "experiment" was ineptly conducted. They should have isolated each subject and interviewed them individually, instead they allowed the others to coerce their opinions and subjected them to _confirmation bias,_ showing profligacy in how they went about this.

It is very interesting how the Halo Effect can blur our judgment of a person. This video showed me I need to be more aware in my own life of the Halo Effect so as to not give the wrong impression and to also not perceive the wrong impressions of others.

There were three things I saw that I feel drastically impacted the results of this study. For one, each group sat at completely different areas - the upbeat group being at a more informal and comfy area, and the negative group being seated at a more formal seated area. If one signifies warmth, comfort and friendliness (think: four girls laughing and having fun on a bed) and the other signifies formality and seriousness, the interpretation of this video can easily be misrepresented purely because the tone of the room. Then there is the fact that the lighting was different as well; the bedroom being held with soft warm-toned lighting situated at the sides and sunlight peeking through whilst the dining table having predominantly piercing lights situated right above their faces. This also affects the tone of the room and the perceived warmth his demeanor, that in turn affects the results in the women's final decision. Lastly, there is the factor that they are all situated in groups in the first place that affects influences of conformity and group influence. A lot of the girls were nodding or shaking heads in unison, pointing out aspects and automatically receiving a head nod in agreement. It is very likely that both groups were influenced by the other women, and therefore deterred their results from being accurate and unbiased.

It amazes me how something as slight as the inflection or tone in what someone is saying can change one's entire perspective. I would like to see this experiment done slightly different, though. I think it would be interesting to have several different actors, each with their own script recorded in two different tones, then shown at random to several different potential dates who are alone (not in a group setting) to see what their choices would be. I also would think it would be intriguing to do this with people of different sexual orientations (heterosexual men, heterosexual women, bi, gay, lesbian, trans, etc.).

I was already familiar withthe importance of first impressions, but this video helped exhibit how extensive that impression really is. I found it interesting that even after the group of girls who saw the down-beat video first were told that Charlie was intentionally speaking in that manner they still held on to the opinions they had formed of him from watching the first video.

This is a great example of how we tend to cast judgement on others. It also shows that one's tone and body language determines the way others recieve their message.

Is this science? We already know that a persons presentation (regardless of how they say it) is a bit more important. Yes we care about what the girl says, but if her attitude is off than that says a lot about them (negatively). Didn't need a video to prove that.

Why do we have a hard time giving a person a second chance when our first impression of them is negative?

I've known many people (myself included) that have been affected by the halo effect. It's interesting to see it played out in an experiment though. It's much more difficult to realize that there are negative qualities about a person whenever you aren't on the outside of the situation looking in.

It's really important to carry a positive vibe in order for someone to like you because no matter how smart and good looking you are if you act arrogantly in front of people, no one would ever like you or even reach out to you.

Why does vocal inflection and the pace of one’s speech impact our first opinions so much?

Personality and hygiene are whats important for me. No point being with someone that has dirty nails, smelly feet, low sense of humor and conflicting interests. Appearance can be changed, one can look formal, casual, lazy, sexy or cute just by how they style their hair and dress their self. Appearance is still important, we all want someone that looks appealing to us, whether that be their body size, height, voice, eyes or face, we all want to lie in bed with someone who turns us on. But there is no point living with someone who is shit hot and great in bed, if they cant be practical around the house or have a negative outlook to life.

I was impressed by how the guy reading the 2 scripts was able to keep the difference subtle. It's not easy to stay within realistic boundaries when you're asked to be positive and negative on once topic.

Very interesting. I find the whole concept of body language and how we seemed to be perceived and how it affects us really interesting. Especially when it comes to dating and what not.

I have fallen victim and have been the one using the halo effect. I never knew there was a name for it but now that I do and they have explained it I can see now why it is so important. Not even for dating but for job interviews, meeting new people, making friends, talking with your partner or your parents, etc. Also how you might say something and mean it a certain way but how you said it will be interpreted differently by others so you have to be careful about how you deliver the message. Especially over text messages, it is the worst. You don't know how that person is saying it or meaning it especially when you cant see their facial expressions either, so you jump to conclusions.

It's not all about the Halo Effect it's also about how what he says is being percieved. In the happy video, he says things on a funny tone thus making negative opinion seem like jokes instead of what he truly believes. This doesn't happen on the sad video because he's much more serious in this one. The halo effect takes place in the second part of the video, not in the first one.

I think the reason one detail can turn us off from a person is because maybe we've seen that trait before in a person who didn't treat us well. How we socialize is really influenced by our past experiences and ingrained beliefs.

This vidoe makes you realize how accepting we are to peoples tone or voice or body language. what may seem good for us is not actually good for us because we are only looking at one quality that is appealing and it is clouding or jugdment about how we precieve that person. this is very interesting because this is something that one does not think of.

They talked about the halo effect with the two different videos by the way he set his tone of voice and actions but if you pay close attention to the videos, it is also the tone of lighting they used for each video. The first video was upbeat with good lighting verses the second video that wasn’t upbeat and the background was dark.

The peer pressure comment from @JoMama123451234 is true. Especially with groups of women, social validation is extremely important. As a single guy i've been in many situations where only 1 girl of a group says something negative and suddenly the whole group doesn't like you. And at the same time I've been in situations where i tried to talk to a girl in a club and they were super bitchy or didn't even look at me when i talked, then i walk down the road to get a kebap store where the cashier gives randomly gives me a cumpliment and say im hot, the same girls walk into the kebap store and they all suddenly seem to agree that i am hot because i am some sort of celebrity in the Kebap store and everybody loves me there. The psycology of attraction is very interesting.

Human's judgement can be easily influenced. The fact that you made the upbeat group watch the video on a bed and the others on table chairs is a big mistake, it can affect their judgement. For example, just the fact of holding a hot beverage vs a cold beverage in your hand changes your percetion of the coldness/warmth of the peson you're speaking to in terms of personality.

It goes to show that saying about only 10% of what we say is coming out of our mouths- is so true. It's worrying though that this means we will be temporary blinded by "halo effect". The question is, will we remember to think twice?

Different people can have different opinions on the same thing. That video doesn't prove the Halo effect... Even the same person can have different opinions about the same thing in different times.

There is a huge difference also, if you sit on a hard chair or on a bed for chosing/desciding sth. The positive version had also more light in the room which affects also your descisions

I noticed how in the more upbeat version, the video was brighter and, in the negative one, there were more shadows around the edges of the video. I think that that also had something to do with the mood it was giving off because most people associate bright things to be positive, like the sun coming in through the windows in the positive video. I think the experimenters should have paid more attention to the environment in the videos. Even though the script was the same, the tone of voice was not the only thing that was different.
