Hello there! thank you for being here.
Today I am carving a Cooking spoon from the heartwood of a species of tree called She-Oak (Casuarina).
Tools used;
Gransfors Bruk Large Swedish Carver.
Silky Saw Gomboy 240 M.
Magnus Sundelin Drawknife.
Belzeboo Crafts "Hades" 50mm Twca Cam.
Temple Mountain Woodcraft 4" Sloyd Knife
This spoon will be left to dry for a few days before finishing cuts to create a smoother finish. I never sand my spoons, but I often burnish the wood fibres with a porcelain burnishing tool.
don't forget to like and subscribe, and let me know what you want to see more of in the comments!
I hope this finds you well,
Andy

Jeez, that was satisfying when you took the pommel of the axe and snapped off that piece of wood between the bowl and handle transition, good technique tbh

Why can't I do this? Like I can never ever get it right and it's not my carving axe either. 😂 Nice work per usual. 👍

beautiful wood colours. I'd love to get my hands on some of that. They grow in Perth WA as well. Not sure where you are. Thanks for the vid mate.

It's special stuff, for sure! I'm out east in the Blue Mountains, but it's still rare to find pieces big enough to work with this much heartwood

Interesting to see your techniques. I'm still a bit reticent about axing. I like my fingers on my hands. But I'm definitely going to try to make more use of my drawer knife.

Two gospel tips to lock in for axe safety when you are starting; 1) never axe more than halfway up your work 2) never wrap your hand over the top of your work 3) imagine you are holding a hula hoop in your axe hand, and make sure you are always standing to the side of that radius It's always about taking slow and measured cuts. No reason to lose any sleep or fingers!

Baseball bat. He cut a tree, puts it in a lathe and turns it to a baseball bat and smacks probably Elmer Fudd.

Hi there, this is the heartwood of a Casuarina, often called She-Oak. For future reference, I always add the wood species and tools used in the description ✌️
