The Harsh Coziness of Winter Levels

Winter levels, or world, or areas in games can often have two very conflicting feelings to them, sometimes they are these harsh, windy, frostbitten experiences - but sometimes they are cosy, safe, warm places that just give you some space to relax after a brutal stage. I like to think that while these two feelings are polar opposites, they can actually come together quite well, and highlight each other's differences.

Winter stages are interesting to me simply because I live in an area without snow so video games let me experience this feeling I probably wouldn't otherwise understand.

I get the same feeling with a lot of games! I rarely get snow where I live these days, so it’s nice to get that experience with video games. If I could I would totally visit the snowy area in it takes two for this reason!

Might not be exact but this reminds me of the final “level” from journey (which totally falls into the “Harsh Cold” category) where you go from peaceful dunes and pretty deserts to winter hell where you can no longer float around as easily. Anyways amazing video!
