What Makes a Good Boss Battle?

6 ай бұрынBoss fights, not every game has them, but damn are they fun. But what is it that makes a boss battle fun and thrilling to play through? There are quite a few different factors that go into it, and when they are done right you're left with one of the best gaming experiences out there - but when done wrong you can be left with something that feels underwhelming, repetitive or boring.

Another good example of a mini-boss working to test skills for the main boss of the area is Asterius in Hades. In Elysium, some of the rooms you can enter will have the Asterius as a mini-boss. You fight them, and when you get him low enough, he'll leave the room, treating your fight as a good sparing match. The boss of Elysium is Thesius (the easiest person to hate in all Elysium) and Asterius. Asterius will have the same abilities as earlier, as well as some new ones due to having Thesius, as well as a powerful second phase that iirc isn't really shown in the mini-boss. And you also have to deal with Thesius, who can call the aid of one of the gods you haven't gotten boons from that run as a part of his second phase. (Also, you having the music for mini-bosses being the song used in the final boss fight of the True Pacifist ending of Undertale, interesting choice.)

I really enjoyed this analysis of boss fights! I completely agree that Celeste's Badaline Boss Fight is such a good section for the themes of the game, and its by far one of my favorites. I also think some games that have some amazing boss fights have to be Hades, Tunic, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and the extremely underrated Everhood.

i feel like another key aspect to boss fights is the music included which reminds me of an earlier vid of yours on game music. i think the music is what changes a "good" boss fight to a great one its like the cherry on top. i think a great example of boss music increasing the enjoyment of the bosses are the hollow knight, souls and calamity mod boss themes because even though i might have lost 2h of fight progress i atleast get to hear the boss themes again from the begining

Music for sure magnifies a boss fight - using celeste as my favourite example, when the music started playing a more intense version of a song we’d heard previously, it kinda felt like this was the moment that everything had been building towards (sort of similar to that one gravity falls scene near the end of the show, if you’ve watched it). You’re totally right though, music can be very impactful during these boss fights!

An absolutely banger video, amazing content! I would have liked to see some more boss fight clips as the reusing of the multiple clips got slightly boring (just my opinion and my constructive criticism though, you don't need to take a strangers words to heart). However, I do realise how difficult it is to gather 20 minutes worth of clips so nonetheless amazing work. I love your channel already, the content is superb and I am definitely going to watch even more of your videos, Keep it up!!!!

And also thank you for the constructive criticism, I do agree that more variety is needed in my footage in general - as I make more videos I am trying my best to avoid using footage that I haven't gathered myself when possible, so gathering a larger variety of visuals is definitely going to be a goal for next year!
