Hey Mike, after running X9 combines in the UK for 3 seasons we found that we run the bottom sieve quite a lot tighter than factory settings to use more of the re thrasher to clean the sample up, we typically run the bar graph two thirds the way up in Durham type wheats and barely. We have found running the header tipped right back on the faceplate (easy if you have hydraulic for aft tilt) helps with for aft contour following. It is also possible to make the header ‘smile’ when you press button 1 , go to header advance settings and select the smile position rather than flat position, this gives you way more clearance at the ends for getting over fences etc… Cheers Mike B

If you use the rethrasher like that in Western Canada, you'll plug it up going through the low spots where the grain is a bit tough.

How do y'all ever move a class 9 combine along them narrow roads and between old buildings along tha village streets on tha island-???????? Even trailing a 40 foot head behind tha combine, tha tail end of tha head must bump into a lot of thangs.

Hi Mike, former Deere engineer here. The design of the FD heads was never intended to use the "hockey stick" style off ground height sensors, and instead relies entirely on the feederhouse attachment frame position for its height sensor data. The software sets the gauge wheel height according to the operator's input via the encoder, screen, etc, then it moves the feederhouse to try and maintain a position in the middle of the attachment frame movement range. This was supposed to replace the older style of off ground sensors, as they don't have the range of motion to cover the height the head is capable of. I personally doubt that they will retrofit any such sensors, due to the increased material expense (I know its not much, but its still an increase), and the software rework/complexity. I would bet that the "solution" endorsed by Deere will come from some sort of camera system, like what they are touting with the See and Spray system, but I don't have a crystal ball. If you have any other questions about the X9 or the FD head, I would be happy to give them a shot.

Mike, thanks for another excellent video. A split head, - 'hinged' is the way to go for a wide span head for an equal length of stubble cut all the way across the head. For a wide Honeybee head, they need to split the head in the center like the JD. When manufacturers come out with 70 and 80 foot heads they may have to go to triple hinged heads-! When you are cutting can the drive to the cross augers in that head be disengaged and only running the belts to carry the crop to the center feederhouse belt-?

Sounds like JD didn’t learn from their past mistakes by not putting accumulators on the front. They had a similar issue back when they first released the 640D platform, then in a later update put in another one to make the front actually work in the same conditions that you have there Mike. The ones of their 1870 seeding bar for the hydraulic tyres would be a great fit, as they are smaller size, and probably in stock as a JD item. Definitely be worth a try. 👍
