Loud noise is dangerous for your hearing-and you may have tried earplugs in the past. But did you know that a group of scientists has found a chemical trick that might one day help block the harmful effects of loud noises on our ears? Learn all about it with Hank Green in this episode of SciShow!

It is. I dunno why they didn't mention this, but no chemical you take into your body can possibly reduce the Sound Pressure Level OUTSIDE the head. SPLs are capable of breaking physical things, like the old "shatter the glass at its resonant frequency" trick. Hair cells in the inner ear get damaged in a similar way. it was an interesting topic to hear about but i personally dont ever see this being a real thing.

The salinity of the water around Antarctica is low due to melting ice. When the floating ice melts(Ice being 10% less dense than water, i.e. it occupies 10% more volume than liquid water) in the lower salinity water it actually causes the level of water to fall, so, as you pointed out recently, the incredibly difficult task of measuring sea levels would not notice any change at all. The chemical earmuffs were interesting though.

As there is a physical limit to how much hearing protection can do for your ears this might be very useful in the future. Not dampening the the the noise for your brain will leave with all the awesome negative effects of noise mentioned in the "all this noise is killing me" video. I don't think this will make physical protection unnecessary more like a nice addition.

I suffer from tinnitus and have slight hearing loss in my right ear. And it begun when I was eight years old. Way before I listened to loud rock music. Whilst loud music hasn't possibly helped, my problems started as a result of constant ENT infections before I started school and when I was a young adult. Not all hearing loss or tinnitus is caused by loud music. Some of it can be due to constant infection. And I'm wondering would that potential chemical treatment treat tinnitus?..... ☮️⚛️
@SolarScion
@SolarScion 4 жыл бұрын
Same, and that's likely what initially caused mine when I was about the same age. I don't think it (the chemical "gate" ) would prevent it since tinnitus seems to primarily be due to physical trampling of the hairs, which causes the brain to continue to create the phantom ringing from when the hairs were pressed down.

The chemical "fix" for lack of GluA2 may function as a gate to prevent hearing loss - - and that's great that we learned this - - but as far as I comprehend it, it won't help with the physical trampling of the hairs that leads to faulty brain signalling that causes tinnitus, which, personally, is much more damaging to my life than the moderate hearing loss I have in higher frequencies that I don't even have utility in hearing.

Shitty sound technicians is probably the biggest reason why people lose hearing. The problem is too much square-shaped sound waves and music where volume is maximized throughout the song, which gives our ears no time to rest and recover - which ends up exhausting the muscles in our ear that exist to protect our receptors in our ears. So my advice to people is to go away from a place when music is played so loud that it starts to feel painful in your ears. Or at-least try to protect your ears with your hands. And don't try to be cool and not doing so only because everyone else doesn't, unless of course you want to have a premature hear loss.

Yeah....who would've ever thought about taking a pill before a concert? The future is crazy {o. o}

Im confused, why'd you throw in a second video about ice glaciers after a video about hearing loss? I mean both are interesting, but dont seem related in any way. Unless i missed the point. Otherwise it would be better if the ice one was separate with its own title so that people interested in that but NOT interested in ears, could notice and click on it. Someone let me know if i stupidly missed something

So loud music is a drug that damages your hearing by overstimulating your synapses.

@Alan Hardcastle Pure nicotine regenerates nicotinic acetyl choline receptors, increasing IQ, as opposed to the chlorinated derivatives of nicotine in tobacco, which does the opposite. I'm not sure how it would affect hearing.

@@darkhorseman8263 Interesting, if you could post a source it sounds worth the read. So, would that be so called "freebase nicotine" (as opposed to nicotine salts) or is freebase tobacco nicotine still chlorinated?

is it weird that I'm pretty sure I have receptors that do this cuz I've never experienced permanent hearing loss not even age related?

Doesn't sound like it would help with tinnitus though, so loud sounds would still cause damage. So it wouldn't remove the need for protection. Only practical effect I see is a daily supplement to lessen natural hearing loss over time

You are still going to want ear protection at a workplace. Loud sounds for that long makes you very tired in the head

I don't understand why most concerts and parties play music overwhelmingly loud! Sometimes it is so loud you cannot even distinguish the lyrics.
