This video explains the Hero's Journey through the story of the Buddha. It shows the different stages that we pass through in our daily life as we progress through the balance of Order and Chaos. The Hero's Journey is explained in great detail in Joseph Campbell's book: The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Here, Campbell is inspired to a large extend by the concept of Individuation as explained by Jung. To finally answer the question: "How can we be one with our Self?".

How do you reconcile the fact that Buddhism teaches there is no fundamental self and the Hinduist teaching that there is such a thing as an eternal self?

That is a good question! I am by no means an expert, but this is what I would say: I think that the definition of the Self here is somewhat confusing. That the word is the same does not always mean that the meaning is the same as well. I do think however, that it is hard to imagine oneself without a Self entirely. What would that mean? If the Self is the thinker of our thoughts, the thing that makes our hart beat and so on, then what is a non-Self? If the Self is seen as a static part that does not change over time, or a thing that is not in contact with the Other, then I do agree that there is no such thing. However, I like the description of the Self by Jung, over this traditional description. The rejection of the Self in Buddhism (anatman) is the rejection of the independent Self (atman-svabhav). And the process of Individuation described by Jung is the process in which the Ego is let go in order to realise a trans-ego Self, which is not the same as clinging to the Self. It is in a way also letting go. In fact, I believe that the process of Individuation and the reaching of Nirvana could actually describe the same process. It is the realisation that the “person”, with all his desires and material wealth, does not exist, and that there is only the energy of the universe (the Kantian "thing-in-itself"). Now, for Hinduist teachings, the goal would be to realise that you are God (Brahman). To see that the Self is the same as God, and the same as the energy of the universe i.e. the flowing of the water, the wind blowing and so on. We are merely the manifestations of the Self, which is eternal. I think that in essence these various believes are more the same than they are different, and I think that it is very useful to learn about all these different products human thought! But I am curious what you (or someone else) think!

I hate how Hindus want to reabsorb Buddhism into their pantheon, and direct contradiction to the Buddhist teachings. To include Peterson in the same breath has Jung and Campbell is an insult to those men.
