The plumbing analogy is one of my favorites. Nobody demands plumbers work for no or poverty wages because they "love what they do" or "need exposure," or tries to drive down the fee by pointing to hordes of amateurs who can't fix sinks but will do it for free. Respect the time (and money) you've put into your craft, and demand others' respect (and money).

Tribute bands make bank. I’d love to be in one! I’ve done many, many, corporate gigs in my life and I have the expensive equipment to prove it 😂. Some of the gear from Casino. I keep a few changes of clothes including a pair of slacks and a clean button down in the car for when it’s needed. Although, most large corporations now don’t have dress codes for their employees. They follow the “more comfortable, more production” standard that Google started in the late 00’s. Sometime I’ll go in tucked in collared up into billion dollar companies and their VIP’s are wearing cotton running shorts and stained t-shirts. When it comes to tribute bands they definitely need to have a look that matches their act. Otherwise I try to fit in with the environment. I’ve played for BMW, Adidas, Bandwidth, Minor league sports teams, NBC, State and National Leaders, Wolfspeed, Vinfast, and it’s always different. Even if I were wearing a cheap t-shirt and jeans I will always use a decent instrument. I will say there is always a “guitar player” in the crowd that wants to talk guitars. I like to make a good impression with them. It’s those connections that will keep you coming back. You can wear what you want at bar gigs. I mean, aren’t they just filler in between the good stuff anyway? Just my 02 cent. Love y’all. Have a good week!

We are a very busy corporate band. We use click/track. Obviously in-ears, X32 rack mount with 32 channel snake PA with wi-fi network so members can adjust in-ears mix personally. We travel with Turbo Sounds speakers four 15" tops and four 18" subs. AND no cargo shorts on stage~! LOL

Good plumber analogy- since that is my real job; people don’t understand the expense of just showing up… To (help) pay for my PA gear, I also DJ’d weddings, and ran into same thing… “why so expensive?”… well, there’s the gear, the full day it takes to load up, load in, set up, “perform”, tear down, load out, unload… And by the way, If the party sucks, it’s then my fault… but no pressure… Just saying (or re-saying) you get paid for the end result, so to the video’s point: make sure you make it worth it- Prepare + Practice + Perform = Paid

What a great video with a lot of great wisdom. PERHAPS ONE THING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED AND WASN'T IS HOW TO DEAL WITH UNSCRUPULOUS BAR OWNERS WHO WANT TO CHEAT YOU OUT OF YOUR AGREED UPON WAGES. Good topic for another video.

I play drums in bands and have for years. I have accumulated gear over time and pretty much have everything covered. But yeah if you were trying to gear up quickly to play out you’d be wondering why you just dropped 3-5 grand to go make $150 or $200 lol

I hear that Allen, I play bass in a band that's been together for 20 years and we are definitely in the hole financially but playing in a band is the best therapy for me, especially now that I'm retired. Now, getting the other doctors in the band together for regular practice is like herding cats. 3 of us are retired, 3 aren't 😅

Mid-grade used gear and regular, modest-paying shows are the best bang for your buck starting out. My PA set and 90's Ovation have already paid for themselves.

i think this video really encapsulates whats wrong with the guitar market: it's entirely too shaped by business-owners who are mostly just pedaling name-brand equipment, hobbyists with too much money and time on their hand or halfway professionals who make a living playing better songs than they'll ever write. there's no interesting content for actual songwriters, just hacks who play garage covers with their buddies

I'd be happy if my 90s alt/pop-punk cover band made a tenth of those numbers. Well, $500 is typical, but north of $1K is rare. Lucky to break even playing local bars.

We have a amateur band and we play in a spare bedroom in my house. After 3-4 years we got enough songs and gelled into a decent little group. Nothing fancy. We were surprised when a few folks came over and asked us to play out at fundraisers, parties etc. I told them we play only at my home on purpose to avoid the long hours moving our gear, drums PA amps etc, setting up and tearing down and restoring the band equipment to an upstairs room. We avoid crowds, smoke, drunks, bad backs, robbery, lost sleep, ruined marriages and a host of other downsides. It’s semi anonymous fun!

I have a Fender Passport PA I let Artists use that either don't have one or have issues with theirs, same with Guitars/Amps for recording or Emergency replacement to keep the Music Going, but it Ain't cheap to be a Working Band and there aren't a lot of people like me that are willing to Loan their best gear to Help others so it can be a struggle at times for those that arent trust fund babies or Lotto Winners

I worked at busy pizza restaurants in Nashville years ago and a busy day would bring in $25,000 in sales. That’s bustin all day long with a full crew; probably not possible to do more. I can’t imagine a bar doing 8 times that without insanely expensive drinks

I worked at a large bar/music (1500 capacity)venue in the early 2000s, and the door and bar would bring in over $100K for a capacity show. $20 at the door is $30K right off the bat.

I play in a wedding/function band and the amount of times I’ve had to change or upgrade gear is painful. Ampless, back to amps, in ears, back to no in ears, multi effects, back to analogue pedals, bass bin breaks, need a new one. It’s coooonstant. Needed though 🤦🏻‍♀️

I feel ya! When I was a teen me and my friends constantly made fun of older bands like Styx and Reo Speedwagon playing at the state fair. Now MY bands from the nineties are doing it! Collective Soul, the Gin Blossoms, Tonic, Better Than Ezra, Sugar Ray, Tonic, Soul Asylum, Local H, Toad the Wet Sproket.. Now I have to eat crow! From the front row... haha.. And BTW those bands all still sound great! Go see 'em when they hit your fair!

When I go see a tribute or cover band of a particular artist, era or niche, I want authenticity. They don't need the exact same gear, especially if it's vintage, but they need the sounds to be close. The right guitar tones and keyboard sounds. The right drum sound. That is what kills a tribute band for me is when they half ass it, ya know? Something sounds off or not authentic enough. But a great band does it right, then it is very fun to watch. LIke what the Fab Four do for the Beatles, or any of the bands that appeared on "The World's Greatest Tribute Bands" on AXS TV. They almost become the band they are re- creating. Same with cover bands. If you do eighties music, so have to get the sound and vibe right. I feel like if you do than you deserve to be paid well for that presentation.

Cover bands are not my thing, but the production thing is right on. Super expensive to kit out PA and lights, even for a small band. Also, scrims are the answer to ratty cabs, Baxter.

Most of the bands I've met over the years want to stick with their mediocre drummer or whatever, so I was always trying to form things with the scraps of what was leftover until I just gave up.

There's a music scene in DC and Baltimore, but cover bands get the majority of gigs and money.

The music scene in DC is so insular only friends of friends’ bands get shows, and if you do get booked four people are in the room. It is a far cry from the ‘80s/‘90s heyday. We don’t even bother w it anymore as an original band.

Wow, you guys missed the most important piece about Tribute bands. At a minimum they may need to pay royalties. Tribute bands are technically illegal. They are not just playing a few songs. They are using someone's intellectual property. At some point there might be a lawsuit and shutdown. Even if none are alive there are estates guarding their intellectual property.

Fact. The majority of the work you do as a musician is unpaid. It’s all ‘behind the scenes ‘ grunt work. Unglamorous, finger shredding, occasionally confounding grunt work. It’s a contradiction you have to live with. My contact and conversation with the industry ceased years ago. It’s a hobby now. I’m happier as a result.
