+BeingHonest Yes that is how she died but it wasn't the reason she died. The rumors that she was having an incestuous relationship with her brother led her to jump and how did those rumors come to be...... Oh Dae-Su spread them by telling other people about what he saw. Can you talk without a tongue? No. So in a sense it was Dae-Su's tongue that spread the rumor that caused her to commit suicide.

SPOILERT ALERT: At the end, Oh Dae-Su can't forget anything. When he is being hypnotized, the woman said that the beast (his reflection on the window, the one who remembers evereything) turns and walks away. We see the Oh Dae-Su reflection turn and walk away. When he wakes up, he's far from where they were siting. He was the one who turn and walked away, so he is the beast, the one who remembers everything.

he is locked up for 15years just so she can turn 18... how is this fair revenge at all. Hard to side with the villain when he goes to extreme lengths to mimic the feeling to some guy that didnt even try to spread the rumor in the first place. The real guy with the big mouth is cheol wong, which was killed by woo jin so really he did get his revenge before the movie was over. woo jin is just trying to fight the pain of losing his sister by getting revenge which only leads to more pain.

I agree, though I also think Woo Jin was "getting revenge" so he wouldn't have to take any responsibilty for his sister's death. He would rather believe that Oh Dae Su maliciously started a rumour about his sister and that his sister killed herself because of that (even though Oh Dae Su left the school the day after seeing them together and wouldn't have even known about the rumours), instead of the possibility that his sister partly killed herself because she was pregnant with her brother's baby and didn't know what to do.

I know this comment was posted 2 years ago, but i've got to say that you completely missed woo-jin's point. Woo-jin didn't care if dae su's act was small or big, all he knows is that it caused a big part in his sister's suicide. Just like what Woo-jin said in the movie: "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same."
@lunali7209
@lunali7209 5 жыл бұрын
woojin hates himself for letting his sister go and not responding with “me neither” when she said that she has no regrets. he feels immense guilt so he never tried to revenge his sister, he just wanted someone to go through the same pain as he did. and the whole “she wasnt really pregnant it was just psychological” thing didnt sit well with me either. the way he held his private part and said it wasnt me that got her pregnant - thats an indication that he either did and feels guilty bc he know incest is wrong and is in denial, or to him this whole thing is about his masculinity as well (which makes sense with the incest thingy). either way hes trash and i really disliked him at the end

yo another thing to mention about this movie since you mentioned the bible, is the idea of retribution. for example, the term used in the film "죄" actually translates to sin, not just crime. and of course there's the whole thing about all sins being equal and that quote about the sand and rock sinking. also the whole biz about "if your tongue causes you to sin, cut it off." i think it's interesting, especially since the thing that saved mido wasn't dae su apologizing profusely (woo jin just laughed what an asshole) but it was dae su cutting his tongue off, rendering him mute. ehh, idk. it's 1:30am and i just watched this film. too fucked up to sleep though

His tongue killed Woo Jin's sister. That's why he cuts it off to show Woo Jin that he's truly sorry and not to take further revenge by telling his daughter the truth. It's a story about revenge alright.... Woo Jin's revenge, not Dae Soo's. And BTW the wisdom of the story is not that the truth will set you free. The truth will imprison you. Everyone lives within a prison of regrets, everyone has done shitty things in their lives, and has fucked up before. People have to find ways to deal with their past mistakes. No matter how good or bad the truth may be, you can either weep or smile when dealing with it: "Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone." Laughter and sadness are essentially the same things, they are ways that humans have found to deal with the fact that the world isn't perfect and can often be shitty at times. Tragedy is at the source of all laughter and jokes.

Such a good movie, plot on point, twist on point, colors on point, film making on point. It might not be a popular opinion but my favorite part of the whole movie next to the not-so-tongue-and-cheek ending is the Wide angle continuous shot fight scene. Probs one of my favorite scenes in Cinema.

Hey Wisecrack i was wondering if you guys could start maybe releasing a list of movies you guys are planning on doing shows on. I would love to be able to have a chance to think about themes and meaning on my own before watching your guy's dope analysis. Plus it seems like you guys always pick movies that are very deep and meaningful so it would give me a list of good movies to watch!

Little piece of trivia: apparently (or at least so I've heard) Oh Dae Su's actor, Choi Min Sik, is a vegetarian (or maybe even vegan? don't quite remember). So the part where he eats a still-wriggling squid? Yeah, this guy took method acting to rare extremes in this movie. I'm pretty sure Park Chan-wook (the film's director) only made him do the one take. Or at least I hope so...
