You guys forgot to add the fact that Daniel beating Eli to death is a parallel to the story of the brothers Cain and Able. where one brother killed the other. That's why Eli keeps yelling out 'we're brothers' before Daniel beats him to death.

I agree. "Bastard in a basket" is simply an expression of love from the father. I see HW as the villain here for abandoning his adoptive dad and not understanding what he has done for him all this time (even keeping a secret for such a long time is no easy task). The son turned out to be deaf...

Sometimes love is not all you need. The only reason he would have to cut ties is because he's such a selfish narcissist that the thought of sharing anything(in this case business opportunity) with anyone is physically painful to him. So anyone who's not completely on team Daniel can go impale themselves. The only reason he's not the worst person in the entire movie is because he has to share even that with the equally douchy preacher.
@xjcforever1x
@xjcforever1x 5 жыл бұрын
You think that his son in the worst person in the movie? Did you even watch the same movie that I did? Daniel was a terrible father, a murderer, and a person who took advantage of anyone who did not know how valuable their land was. Daniel and Eli were extremely similar characters who just used their ablity to be persuasive in different ways. I'd say you might want to rewatch the movie.
@CJ-rg4qu
@CJ-rg4qu 5 жыл бұрын
You're way off in left field Jordan, he was talking about Daniel. Moving speech though. Back to the OP though, I think this is looking at the movie in a rosey way. I think he legitimately meant what he said and while he might have tried to be a good father, as he became more of a monster he knew his true intentions. Daniel had very little interaction with him and had no reason to be happy with him given he was going to be competition, given the light they painted Daniel in. Him waking in drunken stupor the next morning is just him upset the boy he took as his own would betray him.

I think these people donot realise that the comfort they live in to complain about capitalism is provided by capitalism. Ive seen the movie at least 8 times now and it was on my second last viewing that i noticed that Daniel shed a single tear just before getting up and leaving HW on the train. I believe he truly does love HW but it’s at odds with his ambition. The scene is punctuated by Daniel’s inability to look back at the train as is leaves the station. He’s heart broken over the tough decision he must make. His character is way more complex and nuanced than most reviews give him credit for.
@brianwalsh1401
@brianwalsh1401 2 жыл бұрын
He's probably sad that all the work he put into having his prop and having him around was out the door. If he really loved the kid, like you said, he wouldn't abandon him. He never abandoned him before when he had less resources, why now? Because he was more work than resource for him and the starting the fire was the last straw. Daniel is a sociopath really incapable of loving anybody but was good with the kid in his job as making him look like a dutiful father.

I wanted to watch it for years and finally did so last week and I was just not prepared for what it actually ended up being compared to what I expected so I'm curious what others saw in it. They completely misunderstood Daniel's relationship with H.W. The key is the private moments between them. Watch them closely and you'll see that Daniel loves H.W. Paul Thomas Anderson has said so himself. As for the 3rd act Daniels deteriorating mental state and perceived betrayal at the the hands of H.W. caused him to say those ugly things.

H.W. is Daniel's only connection to other people. His love for H.W. is genuine, which is what makes Daniel's baptism scene so powerful. There's real repentance when he cries that he's abandoned his boy. However, H.W.'s disability and the estrangement that follows shortly after permanently severs their connection. Daniel can no longer confide in him, or mold him in his own image as he would his son. Instead, after having to kill his false half-brother as well, H.W. becomes a stark reminder of just how isolated Daniel is from everyone else.

Yes, if Daniel had put HW before the money and oil, he could have been a great father. Before the hearing loss you see their connection. Daniel needed a friend and that's what HW was. But after the hearing loss their relationship changes, HW becomes bitter. Daniel's cynicism won't let him own up to his failings as a father

That last one about Daniel being the devil in the church I’ve never heard before. Good catch. In fact this could also imply with Eli’s representation as a false prophet, and Daniel walking in the church could mean that the devil’s works through these false prophets yet the people don’t seem to notice and are being deceived. +Dr Provocative It's really not underrated, as a film student all I here is how American Psycho and Donnie Darko are the greatest films ever and it's so SO annoying. I'm fine with loving those films, I love both, but being that obsessed with them is just stupid and pretentious. Sorry unneeded rant I know I just haven't had time to complain about that to anyone else I'm truly sorry.

+Shane Benjamson Words like "underrated", "greatest", "worst", and "ever" seem to be overused in any sort of media criticism. I'm not really sure why people are prone to exaggerations like this, my best guess is it makes people feel like what they're saying is more important.

I feel that Daniel represents the devil in a way, in some moments as you look at him like the scene when the pipe is on fire and the glow on the fire is scene and you look at him as he is hunched over like some demonic imp and also the scene where he is getting baptized and he says give me the blood so I can get out of here, again the devil in holy places

You missed a lot of the complex emotional themes the movie touches upon. Daniel is not exactly the heartless monster you portray him to be. Instead he does have love for his son and even learns to grow attached to his ‘half brother’; however due to his troubled past he’s unable to form bonds and sees “the worst in people”. He’s a man who’s lost faith in humanity, and therefore when he sees that both his half brother and Eli were only using him for their own egotistic reasons he lashes out.

I love all the Wisecrack shows. However, I wish Earthling Cinema would move a little bit more to the serious side and less of the silliness. I know it is meant to be comedic but I just think that it could gain from a little more actual analysis of the films instead of the humor. I realize it's a fine line to walk and not easy to please everyone though.
