Made the mistake a few years ago of reading a prize winning novel in a sleepy haze one night. Woke up with my Kindle on my chest and little idea what I'd read. Worse, the next time I picked up the book I had the characters all confused, and since it was an intergenerational novel that really mattered. After several attempts to rewire my brain with the correct info, I finally had to give up. Several months later I gave it another go and it was fine. A weird experience. Usually I can have several books on the go with no problem, but one bad night turned a pleasant read into confusion. Fortunately, other books, and the rest of my life in general made perfect sense (well almost...), so I was pretty sure it wasn't dementia.

Was the book One Hundred Years of Solitude, by any chance?

That is strange... I had a similar experience but it came back to me after a bit

That would have made total sense. 😀 but it was a 100 Years level of confusion over a seemingly more straight forward novel. In the book I read people had very different names and roles that were easily distinguished. One female character had (to my western ears) a somewhat, but not really, masculine name like Steveola [can't remember the actual name], but I hadn't had any troubles reading the day before that I know of. Guess it's possible that chapters 1-3 were just simpler and I could easily ignore any cognitive dissonance resulting from the confusion of the characters.

Dimmable lights in the bedroom are a must for my future home. I love the idea of being able to turn up or down the brightness. Love the new set up, btw! Great video as always. (Little shout out to my silly books, haha!)

This is why I always read fiction (usually somewhat “trashy” fiction or fiction I’ve read before) in bed and non fiction or particularly interesting/new fiction during the day

I read fiction before bed. It lowers my heart rate, I get lost in the story, time and reality melt away, it puts me in a relaxed state, and makes falling to sleep more likely. Reading non fiction has the opposite effect on me. It doesn't affect my heart rate, i stay alert and engaged, and interested in what I'm reading. So I read non fiction throughout the day. When I first wake up, when waiting for the bus, during the 15 minute breaks between class, and in scheduled slots I set aside specifically to read.

I would love to see a full guide for returning to reading if this is something you would be interested in making (for us 16 - mid 20s guys that haven't been reading consistently since primary school and want to dive back into books)

I struggle to fall asleep if I read, use my phone, or do anything else in bed. My couch and kitchen table are for reading

That's a good idea, keeping them separate

Yeah because, aside from the focus and stimulation, light itself affects the ability to fall asleep, not to mention sleep quality and even production of basic hormones and neurotransmitters both at night and the next day.

Escaping into the world of fiction novels can be a wonderful way to unwind after a long day. I find it easier to slip into a peaceful sleep and often experience vivid dreams too! For those short on daytime reading time, incorporating this ritual into their nighttime routine is a great way to prioritize reading without sacrificing sleep. However, remember to maintain good sleep hygiene and ensure your bedtime reading doesn't negatively impact the sleep hours needed for a refreshed morning.

It's not but I'm glad it seems so. Probably because the angle offers more natural light.
