Ever wondered about the origins of baseball cards? Let me walk you through the complete history, starting from the origins with the first baseball card featuring the Cincinnati Red Stockings team in 1869, through the early tobacco industry with Old Judge, Gypsy Queen and Goodwin & Co in the 1880s, later tobacco with T206 and Turkey Red in the early 1910s, the evolution through the candy and gum era from American Caramel and Cracker Jack in the 1910s to Goudey and Play Ball in the 1930s, and finally Topps battling it out with Bowman and Fleer through the 1950s and 1960s. This is episode 1 of this series, be sure to check back next week to hear the rest of the story!

Very impressive! I apologize if I jumping on something you plan to mention in part 2, but I'm a little surprised you didn't get into the story of why the T-206 Honus Wagner card is so rare and valuable. Seems Wagner didn't give ATC permission to use his image on a card, and threatened to sue them, so they had to recall those cards and destroy them. The legend is that Wagner didn't want kids associating him with tobacco, although the evidence was that he wasn't necessarily against tobacco per se, he chewed and appeared in other tobacco advertisements. The second known photograph of someone flipping off a camera was on a baseball card. The 1887 N-172 Old Judge card featured Old Hoss Radbourn with his hand on his waist extending his middle finger. A year earlier, Radbourn became the first person photographed with the gesture in a team photo. For those that think they never heard of "Buck" Duke, he would donate a large sum of money to Trinity College in North Carolina, which, in turn, renamed itself Duke University. Looking forward to part 2.

I tried to keep this video at a higher level of baseball cards in general rather than diving in too much to specifics on a given set or card. These are great additions though...I wonder if Old Hoss was a jokester or just grumpy all the time! I did not know that about Duke either, but now that you mention it, it totally makes sense!

A 'history of" of that isn't just Wikipedia copied and pasted into an AI narration program? You even have IRL book references. How refreshing. Great video.

Lisa's husband, Andy here. Hi Brutus I'm a huge baseball fan from and living in the U.K. and I find your shows really informative. I collect baseball cards, my favourite sets being Topps 1981 and 1984 which I have completed but also I have collected English football (soccer) cards since the 1980's when I was a kid (well I am English after all). I also have collected NFL sets and the odd cricket card as well. The question I would like to ask is if you know whether U.S. tobacco baseball cards led to the obsession with tobacco/gum/candy sports cards (soccer and cricket mainly) across the Pond that have now been around since the turn of the last century? or do you think that started organically by itself here in Britain. I would expect that baseball cards led to NFL, NBA and hockey card production in North America. Keep up these great videos.

Hey Andy (and Lisa), thanks for tuning in from across the pond and taking the time to comment. Always great to hear when there's fans overseas! I have to say here that I have very little knowledge of old trading cards from other countries, especially Europe, and how they began. I know there were a number of tobacco companies that operated on both sides of the ocean though, so if they observed one thing working well on one side they were sure to use it on the other as well. I'd have to look into what years cards really took off in England to know which came first, but I'm sure it's complex and not entirely straight forward (much like the "invention" of baseball as it split off and evolved from other games like rounders and cricket. I'll look into a bit and see if I can learn more...or maybe someone else reading this is more versed with cards across the pond? Football, basketball and hockey definitely got their start from following baseball cards though, with some of the same gum and candy companies making other sets typically starting with football. Some great histories there to explore too I'm sure!

Great video, appreciate all the research and history! No mention of the T 205 cards, just considering T 205-206 all tobacco era cards. If you did and I missed it, I apologize. I’m also lookin forward to part 2!

Yeah, this is more of a high level review of the history in general for baseball cards. I decided pretty early on that I couldn't mention every set created, even in the early days. There were a ton of smaller releases that were popular too...I think I mentioned the T205 briefly but may have cut that part out for the final version. Thanks for the continued support, hopefully I can get part 2 out for next week!

Great first video my friend. Actually didn't know the story behind the catalog itself so even a grizzled veteran learned something! I do find it ironic that the 3rd series of 1952 topps was more an afterthought and brought out due to the popularity but that series ended to being not well received due to the timing. As Sy berger himself later talked about. They ended up dumped a good chunk of production into the ocean. Making that mantle Actually much rarer in the grand scheme of production of the 52 topps. It's also really nice seeing those other trading card releases that weren't baseball gaining recognition in the hobby. With high grade examples selling for high 5 figures right along with their baseball card counterparts.

Thanks Richard! The full 1952 Topps story really is quite interesting, and explains even more why that Mantle cards is so valued by collectors. I do agree though that it's nice to see the other sets get more love these days by collectors...I still wish there was more competition today than just Topps/Fanatics

@brutusonbaseball agreed. Why the leagues went to exclusive contracts with 1 company us mindblowingly stupid. The best time period for innovation was when there was great competition.
