I only collected cards in 1976, 77 and 78. That said when I saw Fleer and Donruss brands I used to think they were second rate, and now I see why. Fascinating history!

Small correction, psa started in 1987 but didn't launch until 1991.. Had the same idea when i was a 9 year old kid and was discussing the possibility with my LCS when psa made the announcement. And that wagner card wasn't actually the first but psa saved that serial number to give to iconic card. They had actually graded a number of cards prior.

I did not know that about the Wagner card, they must have known it was coming to save the certification number! Thanks as always for adding some great info

@brutusonbaseball Mike baker talked about it in an interview. Now you can take what he says with a grain of salt since he was part of the team that graded that and missed/ ignored the alterations. It does make sense though.
