Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing the magical school: Beauxbatons- FRENCH Hogwarts. If I asked you about Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, I bet I could guess what you’d say.
It’s one of the three largest wizarding schools in all of Europe.
And it also happens to be one of the snobbiest.
Am I right?
After all, who could forget Fleur Delacour’s cruel words during the Hogwarts Yule Ball. Even though she was attending the event as a guest, she wasted no time comparing the festivities to the ones her famous French school held… and Fleur wasn’t kind in her comparison. From the decorations, to the presence of friendly ghosts, Fleur was hard pressed to find anything she liked.
But Beauxbatons was more than just a school for the high and haughty.
Its students were among the most accomplished wizards and witches in the entire wizarding world. And when it came to fighting against dark wizards and witches, Hogwarts alumni could find no better allies than the graduates of Beauxbatons. Especially when compared to Durmstrang, the place where far darker wizards and witches seemed to graduate.
So today, we’re going to take a step back, and dive into the depths of history, as we take a look at how Beauxbatons came to be… and why it rivals Hogwarts as one of the greatest wizarding schools in the world.

There seems to be somewhat of a plausibility gap regarding the name "Beauxbatons", I think. Because at that time (10th to 13th century) regardless if one assumes the school was situated around Cannes or in the Pyrenees, the language there would have been Occitan. Thus, in modern terms, think more of the Catalan or Basque language/ vocabulary then modern French. So, the name should actually be more like "Hogwarts", which is obviously rooted in old Germanic/ Saxon languages (actually, though rarely used these days but in maybe some German dialects, for a native German speaker it's clearly recognisable as "hochwärts" [upwards]).

Beaxbaton receiving students from all over Europe and not just in France itself makes me wonder if some of Europe's royal families may have been secretly wizards. The reason I consider this could be a possibility is because French was the lingua franca used by the upper classes of several kingdoms in Europe, and was the common language for trade and diplomacy for centuries. So it may have been possible at least before the statue of secrecy was put in place for highborn witches and wizards throughout Europe to have learned to speak French prior to their admission into the school, or learnt the language during their time there. Once they graduated and returned to their home countries, they would have also brought back with them French influences such as its culture, architecture and cuisine.

A lot of rich people where looking for the philosopher's stone to get them more money and Alchemy in general a lot of real kings had wizards (mathmagians, and Astrologists, Astronomers) for knowing when to celebrate festivals and religious days and to know what their sons future had in store theyed want a whole zodiac layout of their life when they where born I practice real magic you have a sun sign and people don't know about the moon sign you'd have to look at the time and location to find out its meaning moon signs are more advanced. So if not the nobles themselves theyed have a wise man or wise women hired which was tricky when the monotheism kind started witch hunts against us. So I'd imagine it'd be the same in Harry's world since it's pretty close to ours historically

likely located in the mountains outside cannes or Montpellier - the mountains of europe somewhat all connect, the pyrenes hug the border or spain and france but to go north and connect to smaller ranges that reach all the way to the alps. that whole southern france area near cannes and the coast is shadowed by mountainous areas, so "cannes" could simply be a reference point so people know the general area. also back in the day it is unclear where the pyrenes, the alsp, and these smaller ranges ended and others began. the pyrenes do connect to small ranges that go all the way to cannes and the alps... so I would say in the mountain outside cannes to the north west and north east of avignon. this area back in the day could have been considered part of pyrenes and a close town would be cannes as a reference point. viens is the likely tow and could have be "whispered down the lane" as cannes - sound the same

It is not true that Hogwarts doesnt teach their students offensive aspects of dark arts when we have evident evidence in the book and movies that their students actually use hexes, jinxes and curses while fighting in wars. As a American who can follow the english speaking news from coast to coast, I've long wondered about europe and its many language barriers. Yes, there folks there are often multilingual but do they watch each other's news broadcasts and read each other's newspapers? In magical Beauxbatons, they'd need to have a successful multilingual school and graduates and culture, but would British wizards and witches need to? Would the english speaking magical community pay attention to the rest of the magical world?

Remember when people used elephants for war? Back then, most people had never even seen one, and could be used for intimidation and to literally crush their opponents. Giants, I figure are used in a similar fashion, plus, Magical Britain had them all cast out into the high mountains, bunching them together to fight for limited resources; a big reason when they joined the Dark Wizard for Hogwarts. They are not as bright as elephants, but were a huge problem!

Why does the movies pronounce it different?
@GoldSkyward
@GoldSkyward Жыл бұрын
Because the movies pronounce it with an English accent In French, Beauxbâtons is made with 2 words : - "Beaux". Pronounced "bo" (the x is not pronounced) which is the masculine plural form of the word "beautiful" - "Bâtons". Pronounced "baton" (the s is not pronounced, "on" is a nasal sound which doesn't exist in the english language I think ?). It is the plural form of the word "sitck", not like a wand but more like a staff or a piece of wood used for combat. Both of them is therefore pronounced "bobaton" exactly as it is said in the video

If I were JK Rowling, I would create a new magical school. This new school would be located and built deep in the middle of the Bavarian Alps (magically enchanted to be invisible to Muggles) with the help of those from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Ilvermorny. I would call this school *Waltzburg College of Fine Magic.* This new school would open in either the late 90s (let's say after the Battle of Hogwarts) or early 2000s, thereby making it the newest magical school in the world. Waltzburg (like Hogwarts) would be accepting of all magical human beings regardless of their blood status and would teach Defense Against the Dark Arts (and NOT the Dark Arts). Waltzburg would accept magical students from all of Central Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland). Waltzburg would be a mixed school for both boys and girls. The coat of arms of Waltzburg would be a jet-black eagle on a peach-coloured field. The architecture of Waltzburg would resemble the typical Bavarian fairy-tale castles (such as Neuschwanstein Castle) of Ludwig II (sometimes called the *Swan King* or *Fairy Tale King* ). Like Hogmeade is to Hogwarts, there would be a nearby all-magical village (invisible to muggles) for the Waltzburg students to visit; this village (let's call it *Pötzburg* ) would resemble the typical Central European fairy tale village (such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria or Hallstadt in Austria). The uniform of the Waltzburg students to wear would be the same as that worn by the Vienna Boys' Choir (a sailor suit) and the Vienna Girls' Choir (a dirndl). How big would Waltzburg be, let's just say it would be large enough to house the entire wizarding population of Central Europe between the ages of 11 and 19. I can also see Waltzburg developing something of a rivalry with Durmstrang (which is located in the far north of Europe and which is willing to accept); Durmstrang (which accepts international students, but presumably mainly students from the WHOLE of Northern and Eastern Europe) does not admit Muggle-born students, so Muggle-borns who are born in the northern and eastern part of Central Europe are educated in Waltzburg.

Yes, that's nice and all but Europe has enough wizarding schools. I think a far better, more interesting and innovative scholastic magical institution should be established in North America. Actually, I believe one already exists, the Amazon Prime EsSchool DeMajic. Heck, even muggles can make items appear on their front porches the next day. How magical is that?! I respect your idea, but even better would be build a new Magic School in Alaska during that timeframe. It would have magical and Muggle protections. Would have Greenhouses on the grounds and a village that is open to both magic & muggles with protections of course. Basically would strongly oppose the statutes of secrecy but still maintain security. It would be more like Hogwarts, but also teach some Dark Magics (basically similar to fake Moody but more then the Unforgivable Curses).Mainly because knowledge itself isn't inherently good or evil, and how can you properly understand or prepare for the worst situations/magics without recognizing them? This school would also teach Alchemy and Muggle knowledge/skills. The uniforms would include Furs and color scheme be Purple & Gray. The name could be something like: North Star School of Magic. Or similarly straightforward name that pertains to it's subarctic location.

The laughably most useless school in the Triwizard tournament.

honestly...? Using pictures of world famous Neuschwanstein castle (built in the 1880s) in Germany as Beauxbattons ..? A star among castles and palaces with a tragic fairytale star struck history of its own and the concept behind Disney´s Sleeping beauty castle .... sorry but that´s pathetic 😜 🙄 Chateau de Chambord would have been more believable don´t you think ... (plus, it´s actually really in France and far more suitable😉)
