The Gullah Geechee people are a distinct cultural and linguistic group with roots in the coastal regions of the southeastern United States, particularly in the Lowcountry areas of South Carolina, Georgia, and parts of Florida. Their heritage can be traced back to the descendants of African slaves brought to the region to work on rice plantations during the colonial era. A lot of work is being done to preserve the culture, especially the language. In today's episode, I speak with Marc, the host of @creoleexplained about the history of Gullah Geechee. You will also learn some words and phrases from this video.

I found this so helpful. Gosh, as he was talking, I wish he would have kept going, I mean like discussed Virginia also. My grandmother, whom I only had a few years of my youth with, would say she was Jamaican. She was born in Virginia and so my aunts say no she wasn’t Jamaican but since I know some Caribbean populations were bought to the south, it’s not far fetched. Can you bring someone on to perhaps shed light on this? 🙏🏾

It depends on when your grandmother was born, you might be able to find American census records or something that might list a birthplace as Jamaica. I have seen in multiple cases incorrect birthplaces even listed on census. It is sad but sometimes, especially with slaves, they did not know where they were born. OR when people did record them, they did not care to ask where they were born when filling out records. The only hope is to try to trace your family back as far as possible. Eventually, you might have to dig into enslavers past. I have not been able to do this in my research. I mean , for some people who were free, it was easy to trace them back to the Caribbean, because their information was available in census documents. But my enslaved family is tricky. I know very little about my Gullah Geechee family, aside from evidence has connected us to Jamaica, Madagascar, and possibly Trinidad.

Nigerians use such adverbs for example, " see Peter dey warm himself near fire". The only difference is the way the Caribbeans or the Gullah Guchee parts of the US pronounce them. E dey come, which means he or she is coming. So our pidgin is a mixture of native languages Portuguese and English. E dey go, meaning, he's going
