This is the hotly disputed history of the hamburger.

People have some serious beef about who invented the hamburger.
The classic condiment-filled fixture we know and love today is only about 100 years old, and five American cities claim to be the home of the hamburger.
The dish arguably evolved out of steak tartar, which consists of raw meat, raw eggs and onions. The dish came to Hamburg, Germany, from Russia, and German immigrants brought it to the states. American restaurants then started selling “Hamburg-style” chopped raw steak.
Raw meat was used to aid digestion at the time, but New York doctor James Salisbury suggested that cooking the meat would be just as healthy, and the Salisbury steak was born.
In terms of the invention of the actual hamburger, there are several potential backstories. Some say the Menches Brothers from Akron, Ohio, came up with the beef burger after running out of pork sausages to sell. Some also say “Hamburger Charlie,” from Hortonville, Wisconsin, came up with the sandwich. However, the Library of Congress gives actual credit to Louis Lassen, who began serving beef patties between two pieces of toast.
Fast food restaurants then helped popularize them in the late 1900s, until they became the delicious, decadent mealtime staple they are today.

Steak tartar and hamburger are two separate things that came to the US. while steak tartar was ( and still is) something for fancy restaurants, the so called hamburger derives from a German style preparing meat, including breadcrumbs, onions etc. Steak Tartar only uses raw meat with some pepper and a raw egg. The Hamburger Steak, as it was called in the US, then evolved to the Hamburer and finally burger. And raw meat is still a popular dish in Germany: Hackepeter or Mett!

Yes, it was invented in Hamburg. It was called in German "Rundstück warm". It was a sliced bun with a fried mince steak (Frikadelle) and some sauce. It was a quick meal for dock workers that could be bought in the harbor canteens. Emigrants or sailors brought this idea to America. This theory is supported by the fact that the fried minced meat steak was mentioned as "Hamburger Steak" in an American cookbook as early as the 19th century.

Perhaps there are many legends about the Tatars, but this is nonsense. Tatars were never in Hambulg (lol). Tatar is also raw meat, not grliied. In any case, there were canteens for dock workers and seafarers in the port of Hamburg as early as the 19th century. There you could get a "Rndstück warm" as a simple meal for little money. It was a fried piece of minced meat (a flat meatball) that you put between two halves of bread rolls with a little sauce. Immigrants and sailors took the idea with them to America and called it hamburger steak or just hamburger because the idea came from Hamburg. There were no limits to later variations like Cheeseburge and so on.

@@enriquegonzales8186 Nevertheless, the idea of the hamburger comes from Hamburg, otherwise you wouldn't call it a hamburger. In an old American cookbook from the 1890s, the meat ball was referred to as hamburger steak. At the beginning in the 18th century there were canteens in the port of Hamburg where sailors and dock workers could buy fast food. For example, there was a bun with a meat balls (in German Frikadelle) and spicy sauce. This was referred to as "round piece warm" (in German Runstück warm). Sailors or emigrants brought this idea to America. That the appearance and the recipe have changed in 150 years is normal. The meatballs (meatballs) used to be handmade and rounder than today's industrially manufactured MacDonalds brake discs from the USA. MacDonalds Hamburger meat balls are pure beef. German meat balls (Frikadelle) are mixed beef and pork.
