Lindon, formerly called Ossiriand, was the realm of the Green Elves in the Elder Days, Gil-galad in the Second Age, and Círdan during the Third and Fourth Ages. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Lindon in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I love that there's middle earth content on KZfaq that isn't all about controversy and heated arguments, that there's a small corner of comfort and education on the masterful worldbuilding of tolkein. Your channel and your voice are so relaxing and your videos are always a treat to watch, (or rather listen to, as I do). Thank you for making these videos, I cannot express my gratitude.

There is good reason to be skeptical of Amazon's fan fiction show. However I look at it like the original stories will always be there and we can choose to just be chill and let it be what it is. They can't ruin the books.

@@dbeckman85 And that's the truth. A billion dollar fan fiction series is still fan fiction and should be treated as such. It would be like trying to compare literally everything George RR Martin wrote with Greyhawk Adventures. Sure they have the same places and names and the like, but they aren't the same thing. I've always been curious about how the elves of Lindon interacted with the remaining dwarves of Ered Luin in the mountains there, especially since Belegost or Túrosto/Gabilgathol wasn't completely destroyed (unlike Nogrod, but rather left in ruin by its people of which many scattered or left for Khazad-Dûm in the 2nd Age). I have a feeling Tolkien meant to work more with this but never came back around to it. Thus why his son made some changes to the location of the great fortress city on later maps that his father had.

"The sea calls us home" Never realized it before but this is one of the few lands that connects all the ages together In the fist age it was on the farthest borders that were shown on the map and by the third age it was the farthest region from mordor. I first heard of Lindon as the Stronghold in the Light Green section of the Risk Board game(been a few years but pretty sure that is Eriador). Strategically important in game but I always wondered why the movies never mentioned it. I believe it is a good thing when you come across a section of lore you know nothing about; reminds you to be humble since there is always something you have still to learn, and it inspires you to deep dive and gain a new appreciation for the franchise you are a fan of all over again.

Interesting that Lindon acted as a haven throughout history: the Green Elves, Beren and Luthien, remaining Noldor and Teleri, and maybe so of Elendil's group too. Sad that it went from a peaceful land to a sanctuary to a refuge to at last a desolate land full of history but with no one to appreciate it deeply like the elves would. Interesting too the elves in Lindon helped the sons of Feanor. Which son(s) do you think the green elves in Ossiriand had the most friendly relationship with?

I'm curious how you feel about the way Lindon is handled in The One Ring rpg, (or even in MERP although they took a great many liberties with that game to say the least) I've found The One Ring to be a beautifully crafted rendition of Tolkiens world and I've been a fan of the system since the 1st edition came out but I just got my hands on the 2nd edition book and the region focus has shifted from the wilderlands east of the misty mountains and North of Gondor, over to the westernmost reaches of Endor specifically the Shire and Rivendel seem to be the focus so they have brought their take for Lindon, Ered Luien, and even lake Evenedium (spelling lol). Great video as always, this corner of the fandom is practically the only place free of... Strife(?) Nowadays and I thank you for that as well!

Regarding Lindon's fate (which seemed uncertain in the notes of the King's Writer during the Fourth Age), I would make a case for its disappearance by pointing out that the land was, for a long time, not protected or sustained by one of the Three Rings, as Lothlorien and Imladris were, since Cirdan had given his ring to Gandalf. It may already have been diminished greatly by the time that the story ended (I always had the impression that only the Grey Havens were left), and surely no one stayed behind when the ships were gone, no matter what Gondor suspected. (Indeed, it's worth noting that this wasn't where Legolas chose to sail from, when his time came: perhaps it was no longer available to use?)

Here's a topic for you: After the death of Gil-galad, why wasn't Galadriel--the last of the House of Finwe in Middle Earth--named High Queen of the Noldor that remained? Surely she had the greater claim than Cirdan or Elrond...I have my thoughts on the matter, but I think it would be a great topic for discussion.
@Rauruatreides
@Rauruatreides Жыл бұрын
I think it was probably because there were very few Noldor left by that time. There was Rivendell, but it was in reality more like a big mansion in a river valley than a proper place. Then there is Lindon, which at this point is primarily consisted of Sindar, since most Noldor from there have sailed to the West. Overall, very few Noldor out there, so Galadriel would likely have been uninterested due to the little power it came with. She was only interested in having actual power, such as with being Lady of Lothlorien. There are probably other reasons, though I'm not going to drag this on further.
@gandalf8216
@gandalf8216 Жыл бұрын
@@Rauruatreides Could be much simpler, that Noldor doesn't split hierarchies between Valinor or Arda, that their High King or Queen already resides in Valinor and that's why there is none in Arda.
@Rauruatreides
@Rauruatreides Жыл бұрын
@@gandalf8216 there's also the fact that at the same time Fingolfin was King, Finarfin was back in Valinor. Then again that isn't for sure, since the Silmarillion only states that he ruled the remaining Noldor back in Tirion rather than stating any kind of kingship. As with all things Tolkien, it is complicated.
@istari0
@istari0 Жыл бұрын
There was no real reason for a High King or Queen at that point. The Noldor suffered large losses in both the War of the Elves and Sauron and the War of the Last Alliance. None of the remaining Noldor leaders took the title of King or Queen (High or otherwise) over any land the Noldor still ruled after the death of Gil-Galad. It was roughly analogous to the leaders of the Dúnedain calling themselves Chieftains instead of Kings after the fall of Arnor and the death of King Arvedui.
@menukjau
@menukjau Жыл бұрын
There was no point bestowing that title to Galadriel or Elrond (Cirdan was the lord of the Sindar after the death of Thingol). Most of the elves in their realms were Sindarin, and the Noldor were very few. The actual High King of Noldor remains in Valinor, and Galadriel wouldn't disrespect her father. By the time of the third age, the elves that remained in Middle Earth knew their time was coming to an end, and they all eventually had to set sail to Valinor.

Unfortunately for me, I usually feel my favorite elves are the worst among them; the likes of Eol and Feanor. They aren't "good" characters, but they show the most diversity among what is otherwise a painfully perfect people, and who often feel so only because they had the convenience of being written that way. Feanor and Eol, though, were "bad elves", in their own way, and neither could just blame the machinations of Morgoth, or hus taint upon the world; their evil was simply a byproduct of who they were, and I like that, when having to compare the elves to Tolkien's other races. As for the rest of the elves, I think Cirdan is my favorite. Gil-Galad is wonderful, and Fingolfin literally challenged the devil to fight, and then maimed him badly, before being slain, but i like Cirdan dutifully putting his own wants and desires on hold, for literally millennia, to ferry other elves across the sea, and waiting through the many changes of the world to finally take his turn. Elves leave because they wither in Middle Earth; in a world that changes too much for their immortal souls to bear, and Cirdan is among the oldest of them, yet he also waited the longest. Unlike Galadriel and Elrond, he didn't have his ring, to stave off decay, and resist diminishing, yet he held true in the Havens, making possible his peoples' departure, before finally accepting his own reward, and leaving on the last ship.

I never saw Elves as perfect, the first time we meet them in The Hobbit they are drinking and roasting the dwarves as they enter Rivendell, then the next group of Elves we meet throw them all in a dungeon and Thorin and Co can escape because the Elves are once again all busy drinking. Galadriel was tempted by the ring, Elronds wife was traumatised to near death, dont get me started on the first age Noldor, where are these perfect Elves you speak of? Probably just the ones who stayed in Valinor maybe 🤔
@QCzar
@QCzar Жыл бұрын
Tolkien wrote no character or people as wholly perfect, save the One, Eru Ilúvatar. There is, however, a kind of hierarchy of piety. It seems Elves are the highest in this amongst the incarnate beings of Arda, being most highly attuned to whatever part of the theme concerns such matters. Additionally, it is of note that Fëanor, Eöl and their sons broke as bad as they did. It stands to reason that they are among the worst and that there may indeed be many other elves that are sullen, craven, perverse or cruel, just to a lesser extent. To what extent is arguable, but I doubt the story of Gwenithil the lecherous elf-maiden would survive long enough for Bilbo and Frodo to write about. Lastly, consider the utility of agreeableness when living amongst immortal beings. Being ever cheerless, untrustworthy, erratic or uncaring as to one's tidiness might make for an unpleasant experience for a life that goes ever on lest cut by violence (perhaps a fitting end to such an ornery existence). Therefore, such beings may be highly motivated to appear as "perfect" as possible. I imagine the reputational hit of being "that" elf would last for centuries. tl/dr: Yes, Tolkien's elves are better than you at everything, but they're hardly perfect.
