The Avatar State is a defense mechanism, designed to empower you with the skills and knowledge of all the past Avatars. The glow is the combination of all your past lives, focusing their energy through your body. In the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful, but you are also at your most vulnerable. If you are killed in the Avatar State, the reincarnation cycle will be broken and the Avatar will cease to exist.

The appearance of avatars in the spirit world is when they last went in to the avatar state. Roku looks the same as when he was defending his island from the volcano, and Aang looks the same as when he entered the Avatar State to defeat Yakone.

Even though I loved legend of korra I hate how subpar they made her avatar state out to be. However I think they did that on purpose, because they knew if korra were to use it frequently then she'd just beat everyone without a issue so they nerfed it. At least that's what I think

She could throw parts of mountains at Zaheer while the poison was affecting her and she did stop that spirit energy nuke. Also, IIRC she was fighting off Vatu which definitely speaks for itself. I definitely remember her having powerful feats in her Avatar State, but the show generally didn't treat the Avatar State as the deux ex machina it used to be.

After s2 her avatar state is just her and raava's energy so in that sense it would ofcourse be a lot weaker, similair to wan's avatar state and then we see it being used quite a bit in season 2. But i personaly quite like that they dont use it as a deus ex machina like they did in atla in every season finale🤷‍♂️ Come to think of it the avatar state is waay to powerful i cant even think of a way to write it into a story, like why wouldnt the avatar just use it all the time xd. Except fear for death theres no reason not to use it

The very origin of the avatar is the reason why legend of Korea cant happen. I love the show, but it contradicts avatar. The avatar is not some symbiotic relationship between a human and a spirit. The avatar IS the spirit. Sort of like idk the dragonborn. And every avatar is just a reincarnation of the previous one, not just a new host for rava to jump into.

My theory is that the next avatars big arc would be trying to reconnect themselves with their past lives. Because that was Korras biggest regret. Plus the next avatar would likely be very attune with their spiritual side because that’s what Korra struggled with most.

JNPL MLBB that’s the case for every avatar. Roku’s mercy ended up causing the 100 year war that Aang has to deal with. Avatar yang Chen’s neglect of the spirits forces Kuruk to battle dark spirits. Kyoshi created the Di lee (sp?) which ended up becoming corrupt. Aang’s handling of Yukon (not killing him) is arguable what causes Amon to be created. Rapid industrialization after republic city is created causes issues with the spirits for korra. Every avatar is reflection of the regrets of their past life. And they ultimately have to deal with consequences of their past life as well. Korra next life is going to have deal with the weakened avatar state and loss of knowledge. The trade off is their connection to Raava will be stronger, so their bending will be powerful. However the avatar state will be weaker because the connection to the past lives is lost.

The next avatar won't have access to his /her past lives. The avatar cycle was broken then restored when vatuu killed rava. Plus, in the books, Korra said that the next avatars won't be able to connect with the previous avatars at all. Even Korra.

Hear me out. I think Aang unlock the ability to fly like Zaheer. If you recall Aang was actually flying without the use of his airbending when he finally let Katara go. He learned that he needed to let things go in order to enter the avatar state. If you watch the scene right before Azula kills Aang you can see what I'm talking about. I think Guru Pathik taught Aang how to fly.

Theoretically if you're the avatar you could live for ever til biological death catches up to you. Now you're asking "How?" let me explain if the avatar learns everything and masters the avatar state and all elements he/she can just use cryostasis and freeze them selfes to live till someone breaks the ice (like katara did in Atla) if the avatar is needed for a task.

Hello Future Me came up with the theory that how the Avatar looks in the spirit world is based on their age for their most defining moment of their lives. Kyoshi: When she created the Di Lee. Ruko: Realizing how he failed to stop Sozin. Aang: When Tenzin was born.

I think the appearance of avatars in the avatar state/spirit world is how the person seeing them sees them. For example, Tenzin saw Aang as an old man because that's how he saw Aang back in 153 AG, whereas Korra saw Aang as 128 AG Aang.
