Throughout the years, the M5 has gone through quite a few different iterations, and with that, BMW has brought new engines to the M5, and because it's so much larger and heavier than the M3, the M5 has almost always used larger engines.

There's one important fact you neglected to mention. With each successive new engine, they became less reliable, more prone to ridiculous failures and more difficult to repair. Unlike Toyota/Lexus, which has figured out how make reliable, high performance, aluminum block engines, BMW has yet to do so. As a former BMW tech, my personal preference is for the Eurospec M88. With a little tuning it can put out 350HP and decent torque, which is all the chassis is capable of handling safely. With forced induction, much more power is available, but not very useful except for getting into trouble, either with the law or one's life.

S85 V10 "and it's actually not bad on fuel efficiency" LOL Tell that to my valet. 10mpg average and I'm not joking. Usually I don't even make 200 miles on full tank. But who cares? Once you behind the wheel nothing matters. No radio needed just the incredible sound of V10.

Wow, this was an awesome video! I have a S54 E46 M3 and I always thought it was ONLY inspired by the S52…well I was definitely wrong. It was super cool to learn about the M88/S38 and how that really was the inspiration and prequel to the S54, 10+ years in the making!

I don't believe that the S38B38 wasn't brought to the US because of emissions. Compared to the B36, it has coil on plug ignition, less aggressive cam timing, and better catalytic converters. In 1993 BMW only sold 236 M5's for North America, and at that point had already committed to not bringing the new E36 M3. The writing on the wall was clear, BMW of NA wasn't selling enough M cars to justify the cost to keep bringing in new models, thus they didn't do the R&D to make the B38 compliant. There was no M car for sale in the US in '94, and the '95-'99 M3 was not choked by emissions either, but by cost cutting to make the M3 more appealable to the US market.

The S85 is both the best AND the worst engine BMW ever made. It is also the last M5 engine that had the authentic M character. After they went turbocharged with the S63 it became just about power and little else. Even the old non-M straight 6s sound better than the current F90 M5 it is sad tbh. In terms of combining performance AND reliability, the E39 was the last of the truly reliable M cars. Everything since then has been a reliability disaster.
@omnihein9322
@omnihein9322 Жыл бұрын
Tbf, the sound is mostly worse due to the emission regulations with a nice exhaust setup the F90 can sound pretty damn good for a TT v8 that isn't tuned to ridiculous power figures. That said, it doesn't sound nearly as good as any Pre-turbo M5 engines. Also, the F90 isn't terrible reliability wise.
@soundseeker63
@soundseeker63 Жыл бұрын
@@omnihein9322 The f90 is still to new to be sure how it will hold up in the long term. Once they start reaching 10 years old and there are many with 100k+ on the odometer we will know for sure. But previous versions of the S63 engine haven't got a good rep durability wise. And thats before we even think about the insane amount of electronics there are to go wrong in an F90 M5...

" the Emissions detuned the engines power. Means the horsepower was lowered" The same can applied to the V8s of the USA in the 1970s, 80s, and also 1990s which , in the 1970s for example, a Cadillac V8 500 Cubic Inch's power was lowered to around 200HP when it was her higher than that in the 1960s for example. Again. B.S. Emissions.

Naturally aspirated has time and again proven its the best way to go. If you really want to achieve the same power of todays cars, without spending a fortune and being at the mercy of a dealership when it comes to programing modules, i still prefer the s62 with a supercharger. Turbochargers even though produce nice power, reliability nor maintenance is as good as supercharger. E39 m5 was the most perfectly balanced set up. There was actual synchronization between you and the car.

The S58 is used in BMW SUVs? Yeah the X3 M and X4 M. They will not give the 5-series an inline-6 top engine. The S68 V8 will be the next M5 engine, with a caveat. It first saw use in the X5 M60i, X6 M60i and X7 M60i and now in the 760i xDrive. I assume they had to make a new engine for meeting Euro 7 emissions standards but of course it's overall a better engine too. For example the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT with its 650 hp V8 is not available in Europe anymore because the engine doesn't meet the Euro 7 standards and they didn't design a brand new engine. I applaud BMW for making a brand new V8 in these times, although sadly the M5 will be a plug-in hybrid, for fuel economy and emissions and to be more powerful at the same time, but it will increase the weight massively.

Lol so we're not going to talk about all the S63s that spin bearings and/or lock up? S85 gets a bad rep from owners not warming up their cars, if you beat on a cold engine of course you'll eventually have issues
@soundseeker63
@soundseeker63 Жыл бұрын
They are bad but they're not THAT bad lol if it's serviced well you should get 60-80k miles out of them between rebuilds and yeah thats crap for a normal engine but for a 500hp NA motor that revs to 8k its maybe not so bad. You have to remember its an exotic race engine built from the ground up, it is similar to what you might find in a Ferarri or Lambourghini for example but placed in a 4 door family car.

Joke of the century "S85 engine is not actually that bad on fuel efficiency" You cannot be serious???, by far it is the one of the BMW worst engines when it comes to fuel efficiency even in V8 configuration when two cylinders are turned off. You obviously never owned one. On top of that they made small fuel tank.
