They are still seeking another run to the Finals, but at least they have started winning during the regular season. Maybe their first championship isn't that far off.

The arena is no longer the BB&T Center. Last year it was called the FLA Live Arena. The bank is merging and didn’t want confusion in the final year of the naming rights. No word on if a new naming rights deal is in place and if the name will change again. Everyone acts like they play in the middle of nowhere because they left Miami 2 decades ago. Broward county where they play has almost 2M people and Dale county has 2.7M. The reality is all sports teams in South Florida draw from both counties and South Palm Beach. It’s not the number of people, it’s been the product. They are building a large practice facility in downtown Ft. Lauderdale which the players who tend to live near the beach will love. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a new arena in that area at some point in the future if they continue to win.

It's the location, not the number of people, most people in Broward county live in the east towards downtown Ft Lauderdale, Hollywood and pompano beach, sunrise is incredibly sparse and far away from most fans and potential fans. Not to mention east-west traffic in the Miami metro area is notoriously horrible, as well as the largest road going to the arena being a toll road that most will opt not to use. All this accounts for little interest in the franchise. Of course, a spectacular team will draw in anyone, as is showing now, but there are plenty of teams that are or have had not so spectacular teams yet still filled their barn up for every game.

For South Florida fans being amongst the most fair weathered fan base in the whole continent it comes down to winning. There were a couple of regular season games that the house was packed this past season cos they were winning. If the Panthers can (and should) be among the top 3 in the Atlantic this upcoming season the attendance should not vary much. I love the fact that this team FINALLY has a direction and a GM that wants to win. Guys actually want to come and play here now. If the Tampa Bay Lightning could make hockey work in Florida, there’s no excuse as to why this franchise can’t do the same as long as they continue the consistency of yes key word again… winning.

They are opening a brand new state of the art practice facility near Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Most of the players live in that same area as there is a lot more nightlife and things to do for the younger demographic rather than further west in the suburbs where the current arena is now in Sunrise. The light rumor is that they will be building a new arena for the team in the future in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Most of the fanbase is north of Miami in Broward and Palm Beach County. South Florida is so large north/south and Fort Lauderdale would likely be a good center point for most of the fanbase to get to games. Especially, when fighting rush hour traffic during the week.

Yup, north-south traffic is bad but not nearly as bad as east-west. Also, if they can get the stadium near the bright line station, that'll be even better. I've been using the train for heat games and it makes it so much easier.

@Soflo Sports I can't ever see them as anything other than the "Florida Panthers" unless they moved to Miami to become the "Miami Panthers." Re-naming them after Fort Lauderdale if they moved there would be like the Stars moving to Fort Worth and becoming the "Fort Worth Stars." Sure. People know where Fort Lauderdale and Fort Worth are, but they're much smaller than their main neighboring cities.

Huberdeau is arguably the greatest Panther forward of all-time, but I feel like if 613 points and 671 games is all it takes to retire a number, you're setting the bar a bit low. People complained in Vancouver when Naslund's number was retired and he had 756 points in the dead puck era.
@mattk5221
@mattk5221 Жыл бұрын
Yeah but nowadays it’s harder to score over a point per game for your career. He’s 20 among active players in points per game (min. 250 games played) ahead of a lot of guys who will probably have their numbers retired including: Jonathan Toews, Anze Kopitar, Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, Gabe Landeskog, Vlad Tarasenko
@dawnsempire8510
@dawnsempire8510 Жыл бұрын
imo, number retirements should hinge mostly on an intangible question: what did this player mean to this team? i'm not saying Huberdeau should or shouldn't have his number retired by Florida-especially considering the possibility he may come back later in his career and add to his Panthers legacy-but hey, Colorado retired Bourque's number!

It wont happen. Panthers can't share an arena with the heat, already tried that and didn't work out. Considering how Miami has been left with a terrible taste in their mouths after the whole marlins stadium fiasco, I don't think they want any new stadiums any time soon. Also, I understand the new Panthers owners are more willing to spend money now, which is great, but I highly doubt they'd be willing to spend the amount for an arena in Miami. If the Panthers are moving, it'll have to be towards downtown Ft Lauderdale, which would still be great.
