All of the desert camo patterns were 100% ineffective when you were wearing woodland printed MOPP gear over them.

weirdly enough,considering the elaborate camo patterns around, this is one of my favourite camo patterns.

We had some in my unit. Ppl wore them because they looked cool and distinctive, and because it was better then nothing on a cold ass desert night.

Fun fact, in Tom Clancy’s original “Rainbow Six” book, the operators wear assault suits with a camouflage described very close to this pattern!

It was also used by the USAF during the Gulf War. My cousin, who was assigned to an A-10 Squadron deployed early to Saudi was issued a Set. He said they put it on at Night mainly to stay warm, and it was Dark enough to blend in easier with the Night. Hope this helps.

I’ve got a set. We’ve tested it too and It’s completely useless against even gen 2 NV. It’s also almost too IR absorbent and appears as a black blob. It is super cool looking and original jackets are getting retailored.

One of the earliest and more effective anti night vision camouflage was the Czech raindrop pattern from 1964. The pattern is hidden within a pattern. Amazing innovation by the Czechs!!! If you do a history of Warsaw Pact Raindrop Camo patterns this would definitely be a stand out.

7:42 The Scout Sniper in the 1st row 3rd from the left has some interesting footwear. Maybe French or Brit jungle boots or those civvy shoes that look like them. Those would probably be the best to have in Desert Shield/Storm if you weren’t issued the desert boots. The all leather ones would be to hot and the jungles would let sand in through the side and the steel shanks would transfer to much heat into the foot. Uniform history you should do a video on footwear! Servicemen gotta take care of their feet. Almost as much as their weapon.

I wore the 6 pattern in Somalia for almost 6 months. It was hot, uncomfortable, and after 2 months the sleeves of every jacket had shrunk to the middle of my forearm. Not a comment on the pattern itself, but a reminder that whatever the service selects, the contract always goes to the lowest bidder. The 3 pattern I wore into Afghanistan was at least made far better and I wore the same uniform until it basically rotted off me.

That is not how soviet NV gear worked at the time; being image intensifiers, it had no digital sensors or screens to get pixelation from.

The parkas and over pants were cleared out for low prices at Army PX shops (strangely along with surplus US Navy pea coats) in the early-mid 1990's. I got a couple sets of each (and pea coats) at the PX at Ft. Campbell in around 1993 when I was stationed there with the 101st Airborne, and still have them to this day for when I want to wear a nice, light windbreaker style jacket out.

This stuff does in fact work for the weirdest thing ...When I was a teenager I had a parka and pants... as a total fluke we found out it was incredible for hiding in a yard during a buddies haunted house on Halloween .. and that night proved how impossibly good that particular type of camo was at concealing a person at night , on flat open grass lawns or feilds even in ambient lighting /full moon . Obviously it has to be dark out for this to work but you'd be surprised how effective it was ... Picture typical American east coast Halloween in a suburban neighborhood area , single homes, sidewalks and walkways to the front doors .... there's streetlights and crowds of people , so hiding by laying down on an open, flat cut grass lawn a couple feet from the sidewalk with no bushes or decorations to conceal you doesn't seem doable but for some reason that camo really worked for that purpose.... you could scare the crap out of people coming to or leaving this little neighborhood haunted house by hiding in plain sight feet from them ... Ok, they are distracted people in groups not looking for or expecting anything . Well, over the years we experimented several times and in varying situations .. think college pranks and hilarious revenge missions ( hilarious to us) you know , trespassing and criminal mischief ! ( obviously, alcohol was involved but still, WTF were we thinking) .. this is the 90s to early 2ks , teenagers into our 20s so video surveillance cameras were a rare thing and not even a tenth as effective as the cheapest ones we have today.. pre 911 most facilities and businesses were not nearly as security focused... Today if we tried some of the things we succeeded in back then, well frankly most of it would be treated as some sort of act of terrorism.. . Mischievous minds motivated by alcohol ,peer pressure and testosterone can decide some pretty hilarious feats... Especially if you have a reliable way to cross occupied open terrain with little chance of being spotted, have walkie talkies.... a police scanner and a couple buddies as lookouts . Some examples of pranks might be changing the shape of large sections of ornamental shrubs to emulate a more phallic appearance...grounds crews and facilities maintenance folks loathed our work but I'm sure had to respect the effort.. businesses probably didn't find it funny that thier signage was edited to be funny or disturbing ... We went beyond switching those lit up blank Marquis with the changeable letters... We were into actual modifications and additions to the permanent vynil lettering on backlit building mounted fixtures... We were 3 levels deep into this crap .... We modified a pair of sandtraps at a busy country club golf course prior to a tournament, while the clubhouse was having an evening event ... took hours to carefully dig out the sod , transfer all the sand from another trap then filling that trap with the sod from the modified trap.. were talking about hard labor , a serious landscaping project done within 100 yds of a clubhouse holding an event .. had to " borrow" the wheelbarrows and shovels from the grounds crew storage... And return them afterwards..cleanly dig up a long section of fairway and carefully move the sections of turf to another trap while simultaneously shoveling sand out to fill in the new section ... We turned 2 relatively round traps into one larger than life perfectly executed cock n balls that damn near looked like it was always that shape, seamless ... another adjacent trap sand transferred and filled up and covered in sod like it was never there. Clean job, with no dirt stains Around the area... minimum of disturbance to the fairway and perfectly visible from the air... Yup. If it's night even with a full moon or decent ambient light , you can be brought 20 feet from someone is laying there in that stupid grid camo hiding in the grass and they could even point out the general area... And it's still difficult to see a person laying there .. even on cut friggin grass, assuming they are fully covered parka pants and the hood pulled over head ... And you don't have a flashlight. Clearly there were reasons this was effective . First , the top and bottom sets we had were XL and XXL , on medium to large sized persons... very baggy and had plenty of room to pull in your hands and mostly cover most of your boots , this also helped conceal the basic shape of a person . there are limits but damn that stuff took unfair advantage of some sort visual acuity loophole between the eyes and brain in regards to scanning for threats in otherwise open flat areas .. like a filtering processing that automatically assigns low priority or disregards certain anomalies or expected uniformity in a background taken in by the sensors ( your peepers) to the CPU ( your cortex) .. there's some real science there but an example would be another KZfaq video of 2 groups of people, one dressed in black and other group white shirts tossing around a basketball on a stage as they walk in a figured 8 pattern ... You have to count the times a white shirt tosses to a black shirt player ( the distraction) .... Meanwhile a tall guy in a gorilla suit walks out from stage right behind them, stops in the middle... beats his chest like King Kong and walks off stage left , 90 percent veiwing don't see the gorilla at all the first time... It's glaringly obvious the second time and you can't believe you didn't catch it on the first but you can rewind and see it was there before.. your brain will absolutely prioritize and filter out what is immediately non essential to the task ... blinding you to the reality of what is happening in plain sight... Back to the camo and our feild trials ... A buddy of mine lived in a neighborhood adjacent to a sprawling abandoned state mental hospital facility .. huge property dozens of buildings , hundreds of acres of semi maintained open space.. perfect for driving goofballs..never an issue until a new security contractor decided to break balls .... at the time he was a younger undercover narcotics detective ( still in law enforcement now ) we all still partied pretty hard most if us didn't have kids at this point .. So, every time he hosted a get together like labor day weekend, 4th of July, new year's.. it varied, but a couple events a year we took the opportunity to fuck with these asshole security guards. Look, we were adults , trusted law abiding responsible citizens but after very little deliberation it was determined in our keen judgement most definitely they were total assholes.... They took thier assignment entirely too seriously and we're clearly incompetent ... Evidence being the huge sealed up buildings they were guarding were obviously plagued with vandalism yet the locals walking dogs or tossing a football ... OR, chipping a couple golf balls!!! in the enourmous unfenced open feilds during the daylight hours, clearly not harboring criminal intent .. were treated like they were invading North Korea... Often and with undue drama.... And to top it off, were not well respected by the local police due to a few incidents over the years... Needless to say those dildos payed dearly.. So whenever our friend was hosting a get together... It was mandatory to "bomb" the guard shack .. a construction trailer really , with a porta potty outside , 3 guards minimum , usually 2 in roving vehicles patrolling the grounds . A " quarter stick " aka homemade firework about 1.5 inch diameter by 2.5 inches long with an enourmous concussive blast and bright white flash ... ( Little more boom than a flashbang.. bit less than the bang from a 105mm cannon flash simulator) the "device" would be placed under the aforementioned trailer and it's fuse pushed through a hole poked near the filter end of a cigarette ( surprisingly reliabe 7 min give or take time delay ) ... cigarette lit and the clock started my hasty retreat began. Always made it back to the party to observe our work from a distance with a beer in hand ... High fives and pooper pats all around for retribution well executed. This trailer was in an elevated position surrounded by 200 plus yards of open grass fields with no real concealment or cover to approach... proud to report every single operation was successful .. using that stupid looking night desert camo top and bottom , crawling across open terrain with a radio a quarter stick , a lighter and a few cigarettes ... With the always valuable assistance from my ballbusting giggling spotters ( inebriated buddies with a set of binoculars communicating via radio) yeah, they would warn when a vehicle approached, guards using the shitter or shift change.. it was sketchy to say the least but I was always able to place the package and withdraw , never made contact, and almost every time there were minutes long periods of total exposure in close proximity to guards outside the trailer .. like laying in the dimly lit grass 15 to 20 feet from two rent a cops having a smoke or getting in or out of a vehicle and going to the trailer... never an abort never compromised... never would've happened without that milsurp gear in that useless camo pattern.

Tons of this fabric became available commercially after the pattern was retired. I have a comforter made from it that I've owned for at least 25 years. And yes, it's genuine fabric, not a commercial reprint. I've also seen German style M-43 hats made from it also ball caps, flight jackets, shorts, etc. I think I still have one of the parka shells in storage somewhere. They are utterly useless as garments since they have no pockets (sort of a requirement in a cold-weather garment you would think) and have no provision for an insulated hood. They also are not waterproofed, not even Quarpel treated like a field jacket, so any precipitation that does manage to fall (and it does rain in the middle east in the wintertime) got soaked up like a sponge. They are a lot more like the white over parkas for snow camo than anything else. The commercial reversible ones were made by the companies US Cavalry and Brigade Quartermasters, and turn up sometimes on eBay for stupid money.

To this day my favorite camo is the ASAT or “All Season All Terrain” developed by Brigade Quartermasters back in the 80s. It’s the only camo pattern that doesn’t “blob” into one color at a great distances.

We were issued these but without the liner. Not long after deploying into the desert we were able to "acquire" some of the OD green zone 3 (I think) parkas with liners. These were warm. I still have both of these and still use the OD green parka on really cold mornings during hunting season. About 6 years after the Gulf War I was on an NTC rotation in California. Our battalion sergeant major came out to see us as we stood down from a night mission and actually asked me why I was wearing a jacket that wasn't a US army issue uniform. In a very tactful manner I explained that only personnel who actually deployed to Desert Storm were issued them and that I wasn't surprised he had never seen one. It went right over his head. A few months later he was medically retired because he fell off of his roof stringing up Christmas lights (somehow I wasn't the least bit surprisedby that)..true story.

I recently bought a refurbished AN/PVS-2 system and did my own test of many camouflage patterns of which included DNC, and surprisingly DNC actually performed the best at night vision concealment. I observed all the patterns from about 20 or so yards away, and DNC turned one color that almost perfectly blended in with the background. The desert colors stuck out the most (mainly because I live on the eastern coast of the U.S.) M81 Woodland stuck out some too, with the tan and black coloring actually revealing the shape more than concealing it. Woodland MARPAT was a close second, with it's pattern also blending into a single color but it was still a bit brighter than the background. I think it's fairly possible that the DNC could've actually been fairly effective in forested environments against Soviet nightvision devices, given that their technology during the 80's and 90's was probably on-par with those we made in the 60's and 70's.

Good job as always! Really love the technical details regarding the development of the grid patterning, the photo at 4:25 is the only time I've ever seen how this could be effective. I once did a fashion show once where one of the designers went full Gulf War. Bought himself some excess DBDU fabric and sewed it alongside night camouflage kinda like the bomber jacket at 9:45 . Honestly where it belongs... Sexy ass camouflage, but utterly useless beyond looking good.

My unit arrived in the gulf in Oct 1990 and left the gulf long after the war ended (July 2nd, 1991). for the most part, we lived in Compound Rambo. We were issued the Desert Pattern Night Camo in the US (we were told at the time that it was designed to protect against enemy night vision, but we rarely wore them unless to keep warm) at night you could spot the guys wearing them really easy, and the guys wearing the normal (at the time) desert uniform just blended into the night.. The temp at night was below freezing, and by 8am it was 80F by around 2pm it would be 120. During the summer we had temps of 140F in the desert. thankfully our long stay allowed us to acclimate to the hot temps. At the time we were issued black leather boots and they are to stay polished. the black leather in the desert heat was really hard on the feet, so we were issued Vietnam Jungle boots (green canvas tops with black leather bottoms that had to say polished. So many in the unit bought boots from the Saudi Army. they were built for the desert, and super lightweight tan boots which were a joy to wear. I think I could write a full page on boots in general during the Gulf War. we didn't get issued the Schwarzkopf boots until after the end of the war, and most of the guys didn't wear them until the flight home. These days people don't think about Desert Shield/Desert Storm. As a disabled Veteran with 18 years' service, I think of it all the time (especially the number of times we nearly died and the number of very close calls with Scud Missiles which were fired day and night until the end of the war. I watched the Scud that hit the building that US troops were sleeping in. it was the only Scud that really didn't make much for noise. 2,000 lbs of explosive normally rock you pretty good. I drove my 2 1/2 ton truck over there, and many from my unit were already there helping the injured and removing the dead. it was a shocking sight that's still very vivid in my memory. (along with nearly being taken out by an A10 deep into Iraq (enemy territory) just before the ground war started) comment: I always wanted to pick up a pair of night parka and pants from eBay for my Desert Shield/Desert Storm Collection, but they are too expensive for this old veteran.

5:00 this poor guy in the BCGs does an excellent job of illustrating how awkward and cumbersome 1960s era night vision optics for rifles were.

This camo is SUPER popular with the airsoft community, almost all the guys I know that play airsoft have a Night Parka.

I just had an original parka tailored to fit like a regular jacket! Even had pockets installed. Definitely my most unique piece!

I've got an original pair of trousers in this pattern in really good condition. I bought them at a cigarette store for $5 in the early 2000's. They are pretty effective in the summer woods in my area.

I still have my parka, I was issued mine to keep me warm. As a fighter aircraft mechanic I had no need to be hidden from NODs but I did need to stay warm.

During the early 90's the Royal Dutch Army also introduced a day time camouflage: a variant of the British DPM. The same colors as M83 Woodland camo: tan, green, brown and black. It was issued to new troops, while the old troops worde Olive Green. During a test with night vision image intensifier scope. The new camo stood out like a Christmas tree and the old OG was nearly invisible. OG looks very similar to the hight vision camo pattern.

I own an XL set of DNC, parka and pants, and my parka has the liner. Use em as my pajamas. Definitely my favorite pattern.

still have my trousers and use them as my knock-around-the-house pants. One thing we noticed in D-storm was how certain colors of the old rain poncho were completely invisible in our night vision. I always wondered why the .mil didn't upgrade the night vision to that.

I have a Gore-Tex rain parka reversible from three color desert to desert night grid. Not standard GI issue but it was approved for purchase and wear.

The way it was explained to me back in the 90s was that it was specifically designed to work against Gen 1 night vision devices. Supposedly the grid pattern would line up with the photon plate of the night vision device and confuse/blur the image shown

One thing I can say for UCP is that it works really well at night looking at them through PVS 7s.

The first BDUs were supposed to defeat IR because they were tick as canvas, loosely fitted, and impregnated with some anti-IR chemical. They failed because they were hot as he'll to wear, every soldier wanted to look "stract" so they wore a uniform three sizes too small, and the anti-IR chemical washed out. "Stract" soldiers also starched and pressed their uniforms that defeated all the IR properties too. I first saw that night pixel camo in 1988 issued to Special Forces. We never thought they were effective camo but they were practical parkas. In 1988 SF was still wearing Vietnam era jungle fatigues. We just liked to be different. In that era we went to combat without helmets, only wearing a patrol cap. No flak jackets.

I had a spot of luck. A friend of mine who is a tailor made me a pair of shorts out of some original over trousers and remedied the absent pockets with six color desert fabric. They actually came out great!

I was issued a 3 color DCU gortex windbreaker that was reversible with night pattern back in '04. nearly everyone i knew in CENTAF had it.

I recently purchased a really old set of BDU-cut uniform in this pattern, seems to have been made in the 80s or 90s, looks like original fabric too. I've seen screenshots of such sets used in a film, some say they were just commercial which seems likely, but if you ever have more info on them I'd love to hear it.

I don't know why it took me until 9:15 to notice, but I just realized that a twin bed sheet set I had as a kid was in the desert night camo, with an M81 Woodland style comforter. This is probably insignificant to anyone, but it just blew my mind that it was an actual camo, and the sheet company decided to use it in conjunction with the M81. It's crazy to think that I thought absolutely nothing of it as a kid, allllll the way up until now. Man, that's crazy.

I have a US casualty blanket with the same desert night camouflage pattern and its warmer than a woobie and is my favorite .

I used to use that pattern mixed with British DPM or Birt desert DPM on SOCOM confrontation during night.

At 9:00 mins that photo is of a ODA from the 5th SFGA (and at 10:20). The solid tan with reverseitable night pattern was a Gor Tex jacket and trousers. Gortex was only working on the tan side. This jacket/trousers later became part of the EWECS system in BDU pattern. First issued to 5th SFGA in 86' if I remember correctly.

I've got one of these parkas. Dated 1983. The sleeves are absurdly large and no liner either. Still easily one of the coolest things I own. Btw if y'all like cool retro military items you should definitely check out the green laser-protective Sun Wind Dust Goggles issued beginning in 1990-91 during the Gulf War. I believe they were quite common in the Marines in the 90s and early 2000s, somewhat less common but still worn in the Army too if I'm not mistaken.

I have done my own testing with a 1pn58 vs desert parka and various M81 pieces. And yes it does defeat the scope. Which makes sense given the mid 70s gen 1+ nature of the scope

In an area with green vegetation, it looks like it would blend in fairly well, which would make it desirable as the inside of a desert pattern garment.

My unit was issued a set of these when we got deployed for Desert Shield/Storm. We didn't see the chocolate chips until about a month before returning home.

4:38 The Czech vz.60 "needles" pattern, though looking very simple in daylight, has an underprint which shows another, leibermuster-like pattern when looked at through a NV device. This pattern emerged in the early 60's, sometime in between 1960 and 1963 and predates even the KLMK. However, I'm not 100% sure whether it's really the first successful "anti-NV" pattern, as efforts for concealing troops from enemies using NV devices date back well into WWII era.

i still have a complete top and bottom set which gets a fair bit of use, along with a army rainsuit, they are a good thing to have when riding atv's or just being in the bush as outerwear, if you've ever planted trees in Canada you know what i'm talking about...
