Cool list. I'm shocked by how many I remember. Space Hulk and the Nids were great fun. The use of the ALIENS sensor blip until you had line of sight on the Nids added to the suspense. The flamer was the boss in the tight corridors.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay seems to be the biggest omission here. A couple of editions and LOADS of adventure / expansions sets. Based in the Old World and similar, but much more detailed, mechanics to WFB. I think it has been licensed out elsewhere now but still in production I believe. Also, may be wrong but I think GW originally licensed Talisman from someone else. Their first version was actually the 2nd edition.

Yes, you said that there was no room for all games, yet I think the early eighties deserve a special mention as GW was a source of both boardgames, miniature games and RPGs, a golden era of the hobby (now hobbIES). Rogue Trooper, Chainsaw Warrior (a solo game), Cosmic Encounters and a Warlock of Firetop Mountain boardgame, Dungeonquest and a Fury of Dracula. I remember having those last three on my wish list. As you rightly mention there were a lot of licencing back and forth, but that was part of the magic, when the hobby was more shared and DIY, before the craving of monopoly and world domination set in. The history of Warhammer is thus, totally incomplete without the RPG counterpart as well as other RPGs of the golden era of GW like Judge Dredd RPG, Runequest (Advanced, Griffon Isle, Land of Ninja), the Call of Cthulhu (3rd) and not the least, the Floor Plans boxes! It was truly a sad day when GW abandoned all RPGs. Still, I do not think there is a game I have played as much as Talisman (the second edition)...

I can't believe you seriously forgot to mention the original Mighty Empires from 1990 which was not only a boardgame on its own but could also be used as the first campaign system for WFB. It was a gem imo. Otherwise a very great summary.

Two more worthy of mention off the top of my head are; Fury of Dracula - a hidden movement board game where investigators have to try and chase down Dracula across Europe, currently in it's 4th edition and now published Wizkids. Legends of the Old West - an wild/old west America skirmish game based off the LoTR's ruleset. Part of the Warhammer Historicals imprint, so no models were ever released, but it did get a couple of expansion books before the division was shuttered.

My brother and I along with 4 friends, would frequently get together to play Space Marine 1Ed with Adeptus Titanicus then updated to SM 2Ed; Mighty Empires and Space Fleet. Between the 6 of us we had 1x Space Marine 1Ed, 3x Space Marine 2Ed and 12+ Regiment boxes, 3x Adeptus Titanicus. Our Epic battlefield covered the entire living room floor and took both Saturday and Sunday to complete, either playing as two teams, three teams or 6 versus.... with the amount of models being tabled, it truly was epic devastion.

Thanks for the trawl in to the past, can quite understand the grey area between board games and minis games. A couple of things on the older editions: Forces Of Fantasy was a key release for WFB 1st Ed as it gave army construction to the game. 40K 1st Ed I can barely recall anyone playing it as an RPG, everyone I played with pretty much built armies for it from day one, we just created our own limits on some of the things. The Realms Of Chaos books we used more in WFB than 40K, in particular in terms of gameplay they had chaos warband rules which was what we all played from it. Necromunda if I recall correctly was first introduced in a couple of White Dwarf articles ahead of the game? Can't recall how much the rules changed, from memory they were a mix of 40K and Laserburn.

Good you mentioned the original creators associated with each game. Overall, I feel MORDHEIM was the peak of Games Workshop design for TT: * Smaller squads was more affordable * Mixed TT Battles with Story-RPG Campaigns * Smaller scale or higher resolution added more "human" drama (!) to each contest eg veterans (with injuries) * The setting led to great terrain potential BLOODBOWL also stands the test of time as a gamesystem with a lot of legs too. For sure the lore and world-building of Warhammer/WH40K stand out and probably excel more than the actual army battles. All the above said, looking at the modern iterations: It all feels less DIY/Hobby/Passion and more commercial sales carefully calculated to sell.

Thanks for the nice vid, but please allow me a few corrections and comments: 1. Spire of Dawn was not the AoS starter box. The starter box had Stormcast vs Khorne. Spire of Dawn was just a re-boxing of the 8th edition starter minis from WFB. It was briefly randomly released about a year after AoS. I suppose GW just had some leftover sprues to shift. 2. Kill Team predates Shadow War by quite some margin, although I couldn‘t say exactly when it first came about. 3. Editions of WFB before 4th have normal army construction rules as well. I‘m not sure why you thought 4th introduced that. 3rd for example, has a points system, army lists and construction rules dictating that a minimum of (in most cases) 50% of the army must be regular units (some units are even compulsory) and characters etc. are restricted etc. 4. Imo Heroquest (and advanced hq) should really have been shown just like space crusade and not just mentioned in passing. They were very significant at the time for introducing GW to younger gamers. Besides, what would the Bard think? Leaving the greatest game ever made out of the list? 😅 Thanks!

I find your lack of Warhammer FRP, Golden Heroes and the Judge Dredd RPG disturbing, though it was nice to see the original 1980s Citadel Lord of the Rings range getting an honorable mention. Also you missed Chapter Approved from your list of Rogue Trader supplements. I'm not so sure that the future is bright for GW's LotR games. Embracer recently got the rights, and have their own wargaming company in the form of AMG. As the New Line deal is reportedly done in 2023 the current push looks more like a fire sale to get as much value from stuff that had been developed as possible.

Grew up with Talisman. My step cousin had it when I visited my dad with my step mom. I remember playing a lot of cozy afternoons with it. Great list, understandable why some omissions where made, as there have been so many games from GW. Glad you mentioned 40K 3rd edition, Warmaster, Epic 40,000, WFB 6th edition, Space Hulk 2nd edition, and Betrayal at Calth games that I think are the best that GW brought to the world.

It’s a pretty big omission really. It is tightly woven in with the first editions of WFB (and 40k even), not to mention the Enemy Within campaign was voted best rpg campaign of all time. Pretty big fact to leave out…. It could have easily been mentioned as a lead up to HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest. The licencing is pretty straight forward too. I mean, you could’ve just read out the first 3 lines in the Wikipedia entry….

I could swear Kill Team first had rules in the 6th or 7th edition rule book before it became a separate game. I remember it was such a big hit at our club back in the day we were the first in our area to actually run a tournament. We discovered Lootaz were VERY broken in KT. HEH

@@BroadswordWargaming I found my 5th, 6th, and 7th edition books and I couldn't find it so my memory is abandoning me, it wasn't in a main rulebook. All this digging is making me think the rules may have been in an expansion booklet that had extra missions, which could have been for 6th edition.
