Wrestling Bios Presents - The History of WWF's Big Blue Steel Cage
The "Big Blue" WWF Steel Cage was introduced to television audiences in 1986. During the WrestleMania II show, fans witnessed the mighty King Kong Bundy take on fan favourite Hulk Hogan in this new steel structure. Typically, WWF cage matches had been held inside mesh or cyclone wire cages, but at WrestleMania 2, fans watching at home saw the reinforced blue cage for the very first time.
The Big Blue Cage would become a cornerstone in the WWF for years, finally making it's retirement way later in 2001. By that time, the cage had got a new coat of paint. On television, the cage had it's last public display in a match held in the UK featuring Edge and Christian. During it's active years, the big blue cage hosted matches featuring legends such as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, The Ultimate Warrior, Mankind, Ravishing Rick Rude and loads more.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at the complete history of WWF's big blue steel cage. Topics and matches covered include:
02:04 - The Blue Steel Cage makes it's debut at WrestleMania II
05:20 - Paul Orndorff vs Hulk Hogan Cage Match at SNME
08:07 - WWF No Holds Barred Movie / Match on Pay Per View
12:51 - Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels inside the Steel Cage
16:12 - Bret Hart vs Diesel at In Your House 6
18:07 - Mankind vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley at Summerslam 1997
19:59 - The WWF introduces a new Steel Cage in 1999
- Much More!

I remember the Bret Hart-Isaac Yankem cage match with Jerry Lawler suspended in a shark cage. Lawler, legitimately scared of heights, started having a nose bleed (which he deliberately caused) and was hollering for Vince MacMahon to get him down. This was before Vince was revealed to be the owner and was still only thought to be a commentator.

Just a memory, I love to share, at 12:02, you’re showing a listing of house show cage matches. Listed is Shawn Michaels vs Randy Savage. Imo, it was one of the best matches I’ve ever seen. I was 9 so take that into consideration. This was old school Boston and the match was meant to be Jake Roberts vs Savage. When Fink announced Jake Roberts would not be appearing due to personal reasons, the crowd went crazy. I learned more curse words in 30seconds than I had my entire life. People were unbelievably upset. The show went on and then the main event. Even though Shawn was the heel, he was treated like the antichrist and a Rocker who didn’t deserve to be there, he ate it up, he climbed to the top of the blue cage and did the famous pose and flex. Which made the crowd furious.... but worked. Fans instead of wanting him to just go away now really wanted to see him get smashed by Savage. They had an AMAZING match. It was the moment I learned about wrestling psychology. I remember everyone leaving really happy.

17:50 - One of my favorite moments of the early genesis of the The Attitude Era. Bret’s promo was absolutely incredible and the way they played it with McMahon made it seemed like there was a high level of truth behind it all. Everyone from Bret, to Austin, to UT and Micheals were at, or near, their absolute peak and the angles were awesome. 1997 was my favorite year for professional wrestling. The WWF changed significantly and NWO was still going strong in WCW.

I’ve heard that even tho it didn’t appear on TV til the 1980s, that the cage was originally designed like that back in the 60s or 70s when Bruno Sammartino was feuding with THE SHEIK (Sabus’s Uncle) over the WWWF Title. Made it easier for them to work and for the Sheik to climb with his crazy boots.

Like many fans who's only access to wrestling in the 90s was cable television, I have no knowledge of what you call HOUSE SHOWS. I understand the general concept of course. However I would absolutely love a video detailing the history of the house show circuit and how they were similar/different than TV events. In particular, how did house shows work while wrestlers were also doing TV work. Could anyone get tickets to these events? I think other more casual fans would appreciate a deep dive into the concept of house shows and how they were used in major promotions.Thank you so much for creating these videos! The Big Blue was easier for Hogan to climb, and was also easier to get a handheld camera between the bars to get a good shot, and in general was easier for wide cameras to focus on the wrestlers. The ability to drop the cage from ceiling was a game changer. Before that, any cage match required a lengthy intermission to set up. As my dad commented to me after the Snuka/Muraco cage match (Buffalo, NY edition), It took twice as long to set up the cage as it took to have the match.

I grew up a NY WWF wrestling fan. The Big Blue Cage meant BUSINESS! When you heard 'steel cage' the excitement was palpable. The very sight of the cage on match day was awe inspiring & you knew something special & brutal was about to happen. Years later while watching NWA I was so disappointed that their "steel cages" were simply large panels of backyard fencing. I couldn't believe it & to me as a little kid that fence 'cage" was just oh sooo lame.

This is a great history of the cage. May interesting talking points. The traditional mesh cage is my go to because it looks more hardcore. Never a fan of the blue, but it's easier to see what's happening more clearly in the blue & black cages. You always seem to find the best vintage photos- the Hakushi photo is badass! It's odd that a good number of Diesel title matches were dark matches, even winning the title in a dark match. Great show of confidence.

Request: Can you please put your recommended matches from each video in the video description? I often can’t write them down and forget to go back and take note. If not, no biggie...I’ll still watch anyway. Your videos are great, keep up the good work.

That rage in the cage hart vs diesel is my earliest memory of watching wwf. I recently had a distant memory of someone busting through from under the mat in a cafe match but couldn’t remember what it was and after a little bit of searching I was able to find it and watch a match that was so spotty in my memory which was a huge blast. That’s all lol I have a history of telling worthless stories, so if you read this you know how my loved ones feel lol

I miss the blue cage. But, I also miss the basic elements of a steel cage match. It was simple and difficult, at the same time. Climb or leave the cage. That’s it. No pins. No submissions.

Many people also remember that Warrior-Rick Rude steel cage match. Probably because of Warrior pulling off Rude's pants mooning live audiences and TV audiences around the world (somehow, they didn't censored that part in our country)

And now we can say the most recent appearance of the blue steel cage was tonight during the Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 36

I was at a house show in Philadelphia in may 2004 and they used the big blue cage. Pretty sure it was hbk vs randy orton. From what I remember they brought one over that was sitting at the spectrum. Guess they forgot to bring a cage. If I ever find the photos Ill post them. But I vividly remember marking out because they were using the old blue cage.

Hi Guys. Quick correction. The Summerslam Spectacular 93 cage match that you referenced aired on the date that you said but actually happened on 8/16/93 in the Mid Hudson Civic Center during an extended Monday Night Raw taping. It was the same Night Macho came out in the American Flag outfit with the Macho Midget. I only remember because it was my 13th birthday present and I remember the match and the event well. Awesome videos and keep up the good work!!!

The last Piper/Orndorf cage match was in the regular cage and not the big blue cage. I can verify that because I was there and still have the tape we used to record from the third row. The big blue cage was painted black because they wanted it to match the theme as well as make it less distracting for the viewers.

WWF's "Big Blue Steel Cage" is, was and will always be my favorite cage! So many great matches in that cage, so many great memories! Macho King vs Ultimate Warrior - Ultimate Warrior vs Rick Rude - Bret Hart vs Owen Hart. I just loved this cage and it fit in pefectly during that era of the WWF it was used in! Long live the "Big Blue Steel Cage"...And "WWF"

I was there at the WWF Rebellion 2001 PPV all the way up in the nosebleeds, and I didn’t realise the cage was an old one and not the modern one, so thanks for telling me that.

Personal Opinion, this cage was hampered by the escape stipulation. Pinball, Submission or 10 Count KO is how they should end. Great Video as always.
