I was, dare I state, pleasantly surprised by the price for the MR-556 A5. It's sitting around $3K. I remember when the original was first introduced here in the U.S. it was something like $5K. I'm guessing the originals were imported so that, at least partially, explains that price.

I bought a Ruger SR 556 in 2014 with three position gas (piston) setting including a fourth position to turn gas off for closed bolt (super quiet suppressed) firing. Thick, heavy, cold hammer forged barrel that hits sub MOA. JP captured buffer spring and Timney are the only two modifications I've made. Great Rifle! But there's still the 416 bug I'd love to scratch before I leave. Great videos Mr. Thumb

It's nice to see that except for the fun switch and the adjustable gas block all those upgrades are already present on my MR223A3 (which has been available here in Germany for years, got mine back in 2018). I'm also considering swapping out the gas block with the adjustable one, but so far I haven't found any conclusive info on whether it would fit with the MR223's barrel profile. I tried an aftermarket adjustable gas block (from Waffen Burk) a while ago and hated it. The adjustments weren't positive and with the handguard installed you never knew which setting you were on (it was a 5 position one) or whether you were even centered on a position or just between two.

I wonder when H&K will complete the development of their HK433 so it'll become generally available. It would be very interesting to see how they combined the G36 and HK416 platforms. I know Sweden and Finland is looking to either buy or license the HK433 and modify for nordic conditions (like Sweden did with the licenced FN FNC which is the current service rifle which will be replaced). They're also looking at the FN SCAR, HK416 and HK417.

You said the old ones just had one setting on the gas block. I had the 1st gen HK416 in the army and that one had a switch on the gas block to select suppressed / un-suppressed. After many of them had problems they got upgraded to not have the gas block adjuster anymore and it worked flawlessly suppressed and unsuppressed.

On the OTB features - there is also a nub on the inside of the locking lugs of the barrel extension, to prevent the extractor from blowing out. It is simple to remove or swap out the handguard, but it is in my opinion a poorly designed solution. The reason for this is that you will experience zero shift on equipment when remounting the handguard, unless you tighten down the screw with the same torque every time. I was in one of the units first issued HK416N's back in 2008, and we discovered this, which led to a change in how equipment was mounted to the gun.

HK contracted with some designers from the German car industry and that's why the gun looks the way it does, seriously watch Forgotten Weapons for fucks sake. Finally, yes the XM8 is a counter to OP's post about good looking rifles because he mentioned that they also didn't miss.

Almost didn’t recognize that was an HK416 right there. It’s got the 416 barrel but the upper receiver on that 416 looks drastically different from the original.

I had that switch on my Hk416 when in the army in 2010. Never used ut though since we didn't have suppressors. It was positioned another place though.

There's only 1 HK 556n I've ever drooled over . That's the HK 433 . I think they are awesome and modern design
