When I started collecting in the late 60’s-the late 70’s, no one bought cards thinking they would be worth money in the future. We collected them for a favorite team and players on that team and other superstar cards. we often played flips us with our cards. It was in the 80’s that some started to collect card for profit.

Caught in the Collectors' Craze? 🤠 You're not wrong Mike when you said the hobby has always been about the money however when it comes to the KZfaq community this wasn't the case. Since the pandemic it seems like collector channels are fixated on value, worth, and about markets. 5-10 years ago collectors on KZfaq didn't care about this. We just bought cards because we either loved the player or the team. Of course people ran businesses back then and some were on the dealer side of things, but all the collector channels were solely collector channels. We all collect and do things differently but I can't shake the feeling that a decent chunk of people only care about how much the card is worth and what it can net them when sold. Maybe I'm out of step but it's an observation that I feel needed to be mentioned. There are still TONS of amazing collectors out there and this is still the best community in the hobby. Awesome pickups and video Mike, thanks for the mention. #KeepCollecting

Nice pickups, thanks for sharing. I avoid talking about the money, it’s about the card and journey acquiring it.

For me, as a very new vintage collector, I decided to collect the cards I love the look of and the players and moments I enjoy learning about. Of coarse the money aspect comes up with what I am paying but I take my time and find the right cards for me to keep and pass on to my kids one day.

Great video Mike! I absolutely love that Gil Hodges and the Duke Snider. Sad that so many people seem to be all about the money and forget to enjoy this great hobby. I remember when i started KZfaq in January of 2011 so many of us could of cared less on the value we just enjoyed showing trades or mail. Well said though Mike. Love the cards! Great cards. Love that Topps chose an OC ‘69 Hodges for the Turn Back the Clock. Loved the 1977 turn back the clock cards. The Yaz taught me what the Triple Crown was and I loved the sliding photo on the Wills.

Great pickups and great video, Mike. The passion came through (not that it ever doesn't) -- just collecting for the joy of having great cards of great players from great sets. Loved seeing the Snider and Hodges, but I also really like that '83 Orioles leaders card -- two HoFers from a World Series-winning year. That's a really good card! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mike. Nice pickups. No doubt (IMO), you could make an argument for Pujols being in the top 10, a fabulous career. In today's world, everything is about money and it is so easy, to get lost in that. On the flip side of that, I do feel different some times, when holding and looking at my cards, as I get lost in them, and I don't even think of them as money. This doesn't sound weird for me, as it puts me in a different frame of mind. I know at the end of the day, that there is a cost to get them. In saying that, I need to start building my pot up again for the National (lol). Always good listening to what you have to say my friend, talk soon pal.

I just made a video where I referenced 1989 as the last year, it was still possible to keep the sets straight. Imagine how many more cards you would have to add to the collection, if you went up to 1992, even! 😂😂😩🥺

No doubt. I am glad that I drew the line where I did.

Hey Mike. Have not been to a National since the dreaded Covid happened. So I have experienced 3 of them at Cleveland and Chicago prior. In your recent experience which day(s) are the best to go with the least amount of maneuvering through the foot traffic of higher attendance. Thanks

So I want to say first and foremost I enjoyed the cards. But the few things I took away from this video 10K on grading fees, you already have the card why grade it. That 10K could have been used to buy more cards or already graded cards on top of already having the 380+ cards. I know I know you make more money when graded. Second every one of the cards you showed you could have saved money just buying them raw. You say you just want them why do they need to be graded? And then why not buy more of what you “want” with the difference in raw vs graded prices. I think too much focus is the slab and the number in the hobby nowadays. People said “I must have graded cards” when in reality if someone just wants the card the “collecting”aspect save yourself money and just by a ungraded example. I’m not against grading at all it just makes me think more and more after watching your video why do so many people spend more money on a card to just “have “ it.
@BaseballCollectorАй бұрын
We spent 10k on grading because we are going to sell most of those cards and it adds more value to them to grade them. Usually significantly more than the cost.

@captian23Ай бұрын
So I’m going to preface this by saying that I truly enjoy your content and think you’re definitely one of the people who enjoy the cards. That said when you were trying to make a point about not collecting for the money by telling us how you bought a graded 1989 Gil Hodges for $15 you lost me, that card is worth three cents. The hobby is come more about status of a grade, which is so subjective. It’s not funny and buying and flipping. Most of the people doing the buying and flipping don’t understand the hobby or the players pictured on the cards only the numerical value of the grade.
@BaseballCollectorАй бұрын
The Hodges is a perfect example of not about collecting for the money. I might be the only guy on the planet who would but that card. Why did I buy it? Because I wanted it for my collection. It is not going to be a valuable card ever. I am not flipping it, etc.

What makes it the players last card in your opinion (or the hobby in general)? Why not a 2022 card instead of 2023 when he is already retired? Is it because it is flagship, because obviously he will be in other sets for years to come, but I understand why those wouldn't count those. Thanks
@BaseballCollectorАй бұрын
I basically consider it to be the players' last mainstream card. For example, Mickey Mantle has his last card in 1969 Topps even though he didn't play the 69 season. Similar to Pujols. Joe DiMaggio's last card is actually his 1952 Berk Ross. Ted Williams has his last card in 1960 Fleer. A guy like Johnny Bench has his last Topps card in 1983, but he is included in the 1984 Fleer set.
