This is so true, my brother is an rv salesman and right now the only people buying are people who intend to live in them and many of those people don’t get approved for loans bc interest rates on rv loans are also through the roof right now

So true - easily double, excluding the land, utility hookup, septic - some form of foundation (depending on code in the area). For the total price, there are many areas in the US (albeit more remote, less jobs, etc.) where that will get you a 3 bedroom home on a nice lot.

I can't imagine the r-value is very high, could get very expensive to heat or cool.

People don’t realize that if they can’t afford a home in the area, they live, they can easily move to an area elsewhere where there are affordable homes, and most of those areas aren’t far from City’s and work. While I do like that style of home, the manufacturing of these places is what terrifies me. Because you know these companies are going about building these as cheaply as possible, which will make many of these manufacturers cut corners that they shouldn’t and cause people huge headaches down the line. Much better to find a new area to live that you can afford as opposed to getting something you don’t know much about and there is no data yet on the longevity of the construction and parts used.

@@KerryTarnow Thanks. My grandfather died young and left her with 9 kids. She cleaned houses and did sewing to raise the money for that house. Prior, they lived in a smaller home with a outhouse. Pretty monumental stuff for a black woman in the 50’s/60’s.

Albany, Oregon has quite a number of these Craftsman homes. They were shipped by barge up the Willamette River.

Steel is the least energy efficient matrial to build a structure where you need to cool and heat the interior to live in. You'd have to be amoron to pay $44k. And by the time it's finished, it appears the price would be closer to $100K. These are over pried flashes in the pan. The gayboy who got all of the views on a post obviously has no clue. He just lucked out with the views. I have no desire to even go look for it.

I'm seriously thinking of doing this but the other one is my full printing and graphic design studio, and the second as built but with a bigger kitchen and a bedroom that turns into the living room. The old chef in me still needs a real kitchen.

That's an out-of-the-box idea. Interesting to think about homes inside a greenhouse. Definitely a thought I've never considered. I might rather live in an Earthship type dwelling, but I'm not sure. I'd like to try both for a few months and see what I like about each.

This sounds incredible!! The only thing I worry about is the extreme heat in summer, and the possibility of broken glass raining down during hail storms, but all the rest is fantastic! Letting the dogs out without fear of coyotes or quills...

Complete parts list at a bare minimum. I occasionally do fab work and car part installations and the more complex ones done with pre-assembled kits are _always_ missing something. The item's description will usually say something to the effect of 'everything you need' but hours into the project I'll be short of adapters, nuts, screws, bolts, washers, or some specialty item only found at one place on the other side of the city. -_- Never thought the day would come that I'd need to seek parts at a plumbing store for a nitrous kit install on a car. Your last statement is something they ought to have. It'd be great to add some character to a prefab home without concern about whether or not something fits, making unnecessary runs to the store.

@@curtconroy8789yeah after you factor in the foundation, making the walls, electrical, plumbing, etc… you’re looking at $200k. Still cheaper than a house today, but not my much for the sq footage. And you have to already own the land. Again, they’re marketing this as a second unit on an owned property, like a MIL suite or guest house.

Buying land is a good thing. Lower yearly property taxes. If you can find an old homestead, that would be even better to own.

@@72Dexter72Manley72 if it's a gravity fed system yes, but if the land is such that the county determines you need a pump system then it gets much more expensive. If you want to grow any of your own food you need a well or to connect to a community water system. I live rurally and we have a large community water system that costs thousands $$ to initially buy into (you buy a share). Here you can dig a well for bathing, toilet, and garden use but it has way too much iron content to use for drinking and cooking. I live in a very rainy part of the country and rainwater catchment wouldn't be sufficient for full-time living and gardening.

"Your time is worth money." Duh! That is why you save money when you DIY. You are saving the money someone else would have charged you because you are willing to do it for less, or for nothing. Nobody forces you to DIY. It's just an option.

You want a company to care about you. How precious.😂 Maybe they'll even give you a hug. Leave this shell to men who aren't afraid of work. Look for something complete. It will probably cost 200K, but you'll be happier with it.

They also will not tell that person what all is involved. DIY is not for unskilled people. As for your comment about being afraid to work. I was a carpenter for 28 years and never once had to advertise to get work. Most of those 30 years I was a self-employed finish carpenter working for several developers at one time with 3 crews of sub-contractors working for me. Followed by 3 years of self-employed remodeling and then 6 more years of self-employed lawn care and landscaping. That was all after 6 years in the Navy. Oh, and add to that, while working those jobs I replaced the entire roofing and siding on my own house. Done all my own electrical and plumbing. And repaired my own cars and trucks, from engine replacement to brakes and everything in between. And probably today work more hours in a day than you!

Exactly my thought. I was about to purchase the smaller version ($33k) two weeks ago and found out its just the basic shell. I did the math on in and it actually very pricy. Only reason I wanted this option was because I wanted to get through permits and build quick without having to go to the hardware store all the time to get materials for the week. But with all of the extra things you need and if you are already handy enough to put this together, you might as well stick build a plan you can buy already complete for $1k.

@@anthonynicholson5523 unfortunately that would require changing the laws regarding building regulation. Not gonna happen. It's the number one reason we have a housing crisis in the first place. Cost of building is astronomical, thanks to excessive government reach and regulation. Hopefully this civil war kicks off soon so the people can get their power back already.

Lustrons are awesome! There are about half a dozen nearby my home. They are close to 70 years old, so the porcelain exteriors are showing less "lustre" but the design is so fifties phenomenal....and in such great colors like deep red, deep turquise, gray and yellow. I dont imagine the interiors are quite so attractive with their steel plank walls.

Smarter people than me have said that the barns and sheds lack insulation, and the studs are too far apart and would need to be reinforced. Making them more expensive than buying from an actual small home company. I don't know myself though.

HD didn't do anything wrong in this instance... they're selling a home shell kit, that even comes with customization options to meet your local municipal code. They didn't characterize it as anything else. The misleading comes from the person that tweeted the link as if it was a complete home. Go after him and give him a kick in the butt.

I’m still interested because even doubling the price for infrastructure wiring, finishes, unexpected costs, etc. might keep you around 100k. Not bad compared to pricing of finished homes relative to this size. I like they require you to present to local county authority for building codes sign off before purchasing. Our land is rural, unrestricted so I’m optimistic we could do something like this. Would get a quote from local contractor, too, to compare to new build costs.

I agree with Ihab and Kirk. Where I live, the average price of an old house (that would most likely require renovations adding to the cost) is STARTING around $350,000... Again, for an old house. I'd much rather put that money into something new, where I know exactly what it does and doesn't need. Even if I ended up spending twice as much for the initial kit, it's still quite the bargain compared to "buying other peoples' problems," so to speak. Food for thought. I was thinking the same. Oh joy, another tiny home made in Estonia. LOL. Glad Home Depot took the initiative. I'm holding out for a complete package deal. I'm too old and weak for the work but what a bargain for all those who are strong and capable. The steel frame really impressed me too.
