The Homeschool Curriculum I Said I Would Never Use
I always said I would never use this homeschool curriculum...so why am I using it now? Today I am going to bring you my reasons why I said I would never use Math U See and why I decided to try it. Plus I will share with you my honest homeschool review of Math U See.

Math u see is the one thing that has stuck in our house from the beginning. I saw a pattern with the wiser homeschooling moms using it and telling their experience with meeting Mr Demme. I truly love it and the one thing I feel is not brought up enough is that there are smaller concepts woven throughout the main concept. Each books has smaller focuses. So it does in fact have a little more than what is advertised. 😊

We've only ever used MUS. That makes my kids miss entire sections of benchmark assessments at times because they haven't covered something yet, but we all know why and no one sweats it. The pink book can be the hardest for some kids, since the mastery approach takes it on such a deep dive and some kids get bogged down. The also really do need to master it before advancing. MUS now has a remedial course (AIM) for kids who finish it without truly mastering that level. Some kids need that (or another remedial route) or other supplemental options to help master the multiplication facts. When one kid got really stuck, I wish I had pulled the plug sooner and worked in the remedial needs before trying to continue, rather than slogging through for far too long, only to repeat the entire level. That's the closest I come to complaining about it. We've used Primer through Algebra 1 so far. (The new Algebra 1 product, not the Legacy line.)

We love Math-u-see! We have gone through primer and alpha so far and love it! My son has autism and I wanted a mastery based program and found this one early in our homeschooling journey. I love how it introduces advanced math in simple ways. Such as beginning algebra, geometry, reading a clock. Plus I could mix and match worksheets as I needed. Now my daughter is homeschooling as well and is in the primer edition. My daughter loves the manipulatives and my son loves the mastery as it helps him feel confident in how to approach the questions.

I have had my kids use Math-U-See from the beginning. I love how the teacher’s books can be used for YEARS, because they don’t change the problems/ answers. Also, the continuity of the same teacher and same method all the way through calculus is helpful.

Love Math U See. It’s the only curriculum we use that we’ve never changed. My kids’ favorite subject is math and their standardized math scores are always excellent. I love the K-12 line so we don’t have to switch in the middle of their education like many programs that only go to grade six. I will also say that it’s AMAZING to have my kids not be afraid of math like I was. They just learn the concept in a simple way, practice it over and over and then seem content - no tears. I’m glad you made the video.

I had a serious bias with online learning curriculum but after last week's failure of me not being able to teach (with the TBI from the car accident) my therapist said I needed to find something else. We had to do this quickly because the private school needs an answer from us soon about if we are going to be needing them full time again for the school year. Well after a bit of research I found Monarch and started it on Monday and so far it's going well. Praise God!

The homeschool graduate bias against curriculum is so REAL. Looking at you Saxon 5/4 and Abeka LA. My 9 yr old who is neuro spicy really struggles with math and hates manipulatives so even though every random person says we should do MUS, we're trying MWC for 3rd grade.

Sure, if you haven’t done it single the beginning & then you get only pieces of it here and there , it might see intimidating or dry. But it’s anything but . I've had this same experience with a few curriculum companies. I wasn't homeschooled but I attended a small Christian high-school where we used BJU, Abeka, and Saxxon. I had no warm fuzzy feelings about all 3 and swore I would never use them..fast forward 8 years into homeschooling my own children😂 I've tried things from all of them with my kids(current ages 18,16,and almost 3) and I humbly admit that I was wrong about 2 of the 3🤷‍♀️ I actually have enjoyed the things I've tried through Abeka and BJU..but Saxxon is still like nails on a chalk board for me and my kids😬😂

Agree! My son was thriving with MUS until multi digit division and he couldn’t grasp the way he was supposed to do it. And since they don’t touch on fractions, decimals, and percents yet when we switched we had to go back a grade level in order to learn those concepts.

How would you compare this to Horizons? Trying to take your advice I saw recently and teach to my child’s needs and style. My upcoming first grader is a very energetic active boy that needs short hands on lessons. I need simple and easy to use. Any thoughts?
@LifeintheMundane
@LifeintheMundane 19 күн бұрын
Great question they are both very different programs. It is hard to say I would recommend checking out the placement test/sample lessons of each to see which one he gravitates too. Math U See - Mastery based very few concepts taught at a time - Short lessons - Video based - Zero color, games, or fluff but does have the cool number blocks Horizons - Short lessons but a little longer then Math U See - Colorful - Introducing multiple concepts at a time and is spiral based so they are reviewed often.

I appreciate that you are willing to admit you were wrong about a curriculum but please don't continue to spread false information about it. Alpha is more than adding and subtracting. Is that the focus? Yes absolutely. But it also includes counting to 20, place value to 100, skip counting by 10, shapes, & has appendix lessons for telling time. Also the way Mr. Demme teaches adding and subtraction each lesson feels "different" because there is a new trick or tip you are using like the 8 and 9 vacuuming, doubles +1, ect.
