Me too! Maybe the sentence for the lodger was more because it wasn't in the heat of passion - that was over - but it was deliberate in cold blood. Also the man was defenseless as he was asleep and he was also disabled (deaf) which made him even more defenseless. Perhaps those circumstances made a difference in sentencing.

Robert Irwin stated "Ethel was the dearest object in the world to me." Because she didn't return his affection, he decided to behead her and make a death mask, but 'accidentally' killed her mother, sister, and a deaf lodger who slept thru the entire ordeal instead - _and the NY court system found him normal, with no sign of mental health issues_ ? ? ? 👁👄👁

MOMCa, I have this episode on _Crime to Remember_ . Bob Irwin was ultimately sent to Mental Hospital, irrespective of what the NY court thought of him. But if that's true then it exposes the ILLITERACY of the then NY Judges on how to judge Psychos! I mean Psychos can also appear very normal!

That whole "returning home with money to buy land" was the goal of lots of immigrants. My grandpa's grandpa was from Ireland and planned to do the same thing. However he eventually found out that almost everyone he knew was either dead from the famine or had long since moved away so he stayed here. I imagine many immigrants made similar discoveries

This story is repeated among many Mexican immigrants to the US. Their goal is to earn money for a few years and then return to their home town in Mexico and build a nice house. These people represent a significant fraction of Mexican immigrants to the US, as compared to Mexicans who immigrate to the US with the idea of becoming permanent residents.

@@kentbetts A large number cannot or will not go back as their municipalities tend to have worsened in terms of narco infiltration. I’ve known about 5-6 Mexicans that wanted to do precisely that; work in the USA and buy a rancho back home; all but one came back saying that they were extorted or felt it was too dangerous. One bought back his fathers avocado and guava orchards, only for the cartels to seize them.

The 20 year sentence for the death of the two women just shows you how little the worth of women-especially Veronica who the general public judged as immoral-was in the 1930’s. Their deaths were more horrific because they were strangled to death-3 to 4 minutes of pure torture as the deaf border probably didn’t even know that he was being killed. Ridiculous!

@1FokkerAce
@1FokkerAce Жыл бұрын
He probably got 99 years for Frank (as opposed to 20 for the women) because it was a targeted killing to leave no witnesses. Utterly callous. The women he knew, he had interacted with them before, so maybe they though that was more of a 2nd degree murder (unplanned and crime of passion) thing? It’s the only thing I can think of that would also be true in today’s court system. But current day feminists can get all twisted up in their “muh victim” feels about it if they want too I guess.

I would say that the reason for the 99 year sentence was that the victim was deaf, even though Irwin did not know that. There actually was probably no reason to kill him. Even by the confession by Irwin, there is no indication that he woke up, also he did not interfere with Irwin. Why kill the third victim? No real reason to. What I found interesting about this one was Veronica was a model who had done poses for some of those pulp detective magazines during that era, and ended up as one of the main stories of one of them.

Does anyone ever shed a tear for the billions of men who have died in war? For the likely trillions killed and crippled by back breaking labor? No. No one gives a shit. Female victims of crimes were virtually always valued higher than men. And women were much more likely to get away with or be punished to a much lower degree for murder. Just like it is today.

Rejection is difficult to take , effecting each of us to varying degrees. Throw serious mental health problems into the equation and it can easily become explosive. However we all have choices as to how we respond or react. It can easily be on the down side of Human Nature. If you are prone to envy or jealousy - time to ask for help. Best of all give JEALOUS people none of your time. That game invariably ends in tears.

According to what I found, he didn't kill the dog, which had belonged to Mary, by the way. But since her Pekingese usually barked at strangers, and the neighbours hadn't heard the dog that day, it helped pointing the police towards that the murderer must've been someone the dog knew.

The thing I find hard to believe is that after his statement in his second confession, with all its psychotic overtones, the doctors found him to be sane. There's also the strange way that he chose to hand himself in however. Funding his own defence by a cash deal with the newspaper shows a very calculated response to the inevitably of him being taken in. Maybe they were right. He was crazy alright but he just may have been crazy like a fox. Ultimately, his victims were not even his intended targets. Regardless of his state of mind, even by his own twisted standards this was a terrible and pointless waste of people's lives.

On the whole, I'm so tired of all the true crime content that's flooded KZfaq (+TV etc.) and Spotify (etc. podcasts) NEVERTHELESS, I still absolutely love Brief Case - your content is outstanding! Even my 80yr old mother watches your videos which I have to share to her every monday since she doesn't really know how to work KZfaq on her own, so I share the video to her with a simple sms. I don't live close to her so it's the easiest way, but omg they love your eloquent style of presentation and soft narration. A dream come true would be if you'd try and make a somewhat longer video or a even in a podcast style format, no need for a lot of editing - just a picture while narrating or a slide that changed every few minutes would be quite enough.. Anyhow, kudos to you for your work!

I think it's because the older crimes have an element of history to us. BC doesn't dwell on gory details he's more interested in telling a tragic story. Everyone in my experience, enjoys listening to an interesting story.

Morning BC 😁 I had a panic yesterday, thinking it was Monday and I couldn't find your latest drop. Silly me. Interesting, but sad story. R Regan did much good for America. But, he closed all of the Mental Health hospitals and started this whole homeless mess here. They needed much closer supervision, but they cost too much money for the government. So they we all closed.

Well done! The story of the "Mad Sculptor" as the murderer was known. And he was thoroughly mad. Twist: I worked for 25 years as an artist's model and actually posed for classes at the Rockland County, New York, Community College sculpture classes which stood on the grounds of the former insane asylum wherein he was committed! The old hospital still stands as the Administration Building. I stopped accepting bookings there after I read of this case. 😲

Men were considered to be more important. They did important things in the world. Women were encouraged not to work but to marry and raise the children. Their lives were not as valuable. Excuse me if this is duplicative of one of the 133 comments, a sign of this channel's richly merited popularity. The discrepancy in sentencing very likely had to do with state of mind and premeditation. Burns was killed purely to eliminate a witness. If the story is to be believed this could easily have applied to Veronica as well, so it should have been: 20, 99, & 99.

This was a very fascinating and yet intriguing case of a "horrific," triple murder case. The man that committed these murders, should have been put into a mental institution, originally, and these innocent people should have lived out their lives. Personally, I think he should have been given the death penalty, period! It shouldn't ever been a plea deal considering the fact that this was a triple murder case. May the souls of these three people rest in eternal peace. 🌹 Great investigating, presentation, and historical information, too.

I find it appalling that the killing sentences that Robert received for Mary and Veronica is a testament to how society viewed the lives of women as second or fourth class citizens. It’s quite apparent that after almost 100 years it is still sadly the case. As for POC, they have still been subjected to the same class as citizens, no matter how successful, impressive educations as well as how much they have overcome, it is still ongoing in the 21st century.
