While on tour for their first album, The Gereg, Mongolian rock band The Hu stops by Google to play a short set and answer some questions. The band discusses the traditional instruments they play and incorporate into their music, their history and experiences touring the world, and the message they hope listeners take away from their music.

That's the only thing i don't like about this talk. Having a live translator for the audience is fine but it's ridiculous that one of the biggest companies in the world couldn't provide a more detailed translation as subtitles.

I highly disagree with the guy encouraging them to translate their music. Man, music is universal and you just enjoy it for what it is. You can always look up a translation for the lyrics if you want :)

@@jamielobo855 I get it. But if you already know that the lyrics are interesting, because you've looked them up, I don't really see the need for them to translate.. Also, who are we to ask them to write music in a language they might not be comfortable with? I do get your point - it's always nice to know the message of a song lyrically.

Let them sing in their own language. Heard any Rammstein? They sound better when they sing in German (rather than in English, which isn't their native tongue).

That's right. Who care's what they're saying. What's most important is how I feel. This song is about the shame people should feel having betrayed the values and greatness of their conquering, warrior ancestors, by the way.

If youre aware, those vocal acrobatics using throats can hurt and injure a singer's vocal chords, these Mongolians learned it since childhood, and it is said every Mongolian man must master it, its known as "Khoomei" and the Mongol ancestors who were nomads developed it when they heard nature's sounds surrounding them. Astonishing! 🇲🇳

Translater was actually so good. Vocal translation is usually way harder than the written translation. Even in script translation, there were many sentences that are difficult to translate. The band members spoke about closely culturally related practices using words that don’t exist in English. Don’t criticize the translator guys.

I agree simultanious translation or interpretation is the hardest. as one myself. i can say its one of the hardest jobs. in time wise, written translation takes a lot of time... vimultanious or live translation is hard... because you need to keep up and give the most exact meanings in split of second... shapoo,,, he seemed to do a good job, though i don't understand Mongolian. They have collaborated with a number of American musicians throughout their tour, recording alternate versions with a combination of Mongolian and English lyrics. While I prefer the poetry in the sound of the original versions, I can definitely understand recording alternate versions to increase their accessibility to an American audience. Might want to check out the alternate version of Wolf Totem for an example.

❤🐴 🎶 THE HU!!! 🎸= My Favorite band & music! 🐎💞 I drove 200 miles in a rain storm to see The HU play a live sold out show in Sacramento, California, 2019.11.30. 🎶AWESOME SHOW!!!🎶 💗 Loved every minute!💋 I was so excited to see them play live up close. (Btw, All the local shows sold out in minutes... San Francisco, San Jose, etc) I've seen live in concert, every band they mentioned listening to. All excellent bands. I would assume Pantera is one of them as well. But, at this moment,🎸The Hu 🎸, is, by far, my favorite band to see live and to listen to. I can't wait to see them live again! Thank you KZfaq for helping me to discover them. 💗💋🎶 and THANK YOU!, "THE HU", for bringing your music into my heart and into the hearts of the world! 🎶🌏

My family has a lot of Mongolian friends from Inner Mongolia. I could say from my personal experience that the pronunciation sounds strong and sometimes harsh, but their way of speak, how to use their voice, is soft and gentle. No matter the person is a singer or professor, man or woman. It's greatly different from e.g. Chinese or English. As a Japanese speaker, their way of speak sounds more familiar to my ears than any other languages besides the pronunciation. Due to the similarity and simplicity of the pronunciation of Japanese, Mongolian people are really good at speaking Japanese.

The discipline for throat singing is testament to their devotaion and commitment to their culture, heritage and ancestors. Mongol history for the little I barely remember from public schools, was extreme and harsh. Kubla khan if. I. Remember, was a fierce warrior who breed the powerfull short statured ponies used in combat. If he had the technology we have today, the world would be speaking Mongolian. Dam glad I never had to go up against such a formidable foe.

Greetings from the US. Absolutely amazing. I had seen you guys pop up in my KZfaq searches for other bands. I finally decided to give Wolf Totem a listen and wow! I don't know what took me so long to listen to you. Your music speaks to a part of the human condition that remembers the hunt be that hunt on the high steppes of Mongolia, the dark forests of Europe or the Woodlands of the eastern United States. It talks to the DNA inside of us that remembers living and dying for our clans. You speak to the parts of us that remember fearing yet exalting the many gods we created to explain the world around us before science did it. Keep up the good work. All I can say for sure is the Hu is on my radar and in my playlist.

One good point the guy makes. We in the west focus a lot on the process of conquest but for the most part, the Mongols were very chill with the peoples they submitted. In the biggest bloodbaths like Sarmakand or Baghdad, the cities downright tortured the Mongol diplomats for having the audacity to demand tribute. The Mongol Empire was big because of their military power but lasted so long because of their tolerance and desire for progress. Interesting fact: the Pope actually had a treaty with one of the hordes to coordinate a crusade against Syria and end Islam, but it fizzled due to succession events in the khanate. Mongol diplomats did their miles.

Very thankful to Google to allow this interview which told me so much more about these very spiritual and humble guys. I've been enjoying their music for months on KZfaq and for those of you who want to know the words they are translated from Google on KZfaq, however, the whole point behind their music to me, is the "feeling"- it touches your soul and through that you know the meaning, you don't need the words. Please don't try to change them into some westernized vision that you have, enjoy them for who they are and what they present as indigenous people.

These guys are great! Seriously. Something new and unique with a good sound! And if I heard them correctly when the one guy was naming bands that influenced them I could have sworn I heard him say KoRn. And hey, KoRn has been my favorite band for 25 years.. if these guys were inspired by KoRn, that just makes me like them even more! :)

They should not have to. It is a case of have the translations be in subtitles since they are entitled to sing in a language they fluently speak and understand rather than ones they do not. The fans will not have an issue or a problem with that only those who are not particularly fans will be the ones who have a problem with it. They do not have to learn to speak other languages to sing in them especially the style of singing they do.

agreed, nobody would ask Linkin Park to translate their songs to another language, so why should we of another culture's music?

The music as always is wonderful and unites us all regardless of language.Sadly the interview was so short I could have listened to them speak about their culture and history for hours! What I really missed tho was the drum beat. The HU's Wolf Totem has become my wakeup morning ritual and I can say I have never felt more enerergized in the dull British winter weather haha..

I heard the 2nd song w the flute long before I heard of wolf totem. On a tribal relaxation cd. It was instantly my favorite on that cd. Years later, enter WolfTotem. As I listen to more of their music, I found that familiar flute song here and smiled. I've loved their music for years and never knew it. So very enriched now that I do...thank you for the interview. Very enlightening. My warrior spirit is awakened. Thank you.
