Complaining about how expensive it’s gotten to watch a match feels like a right of passage for every fan as they get older. The stadiums get bigger, the entertainment value more expensive, and the ticket prices go up. But, there is one club looking at things differently, and they are piloting a program where no one has to pay for a ticket anymore.
If this works, it will make every other club look super greedy and honestly that could help out the world a little bit. If it doesn’t work, then hey you get a chance to go see matches for free. I just like seeing clubs try to do new things instead of participating in a rat race where they don’t have the same resources as the clubs in front of them, free tickets may be the crazy idea that tips the scales!
Much Love,
The Zealand

My hometown football club, União de Leiria (from Portugal), has done that this year. All home matches were completely free. We were in the portuguese third division and managed to get an average attendance bigger than most clubs in the first division. By doing so, most people started to support more the club, by buying shirts, scarves, etc. The amount of money made was way bigger than previous years, where we had payed tickets. The ambient in the stadium this season was way better and we managed to get a promotion with that. For next season we still don't know whether the tickets will be free or not, but it will most likely keep like that

When I read just the title I really thought Z was going to talk about Leiria. Well not completely free, you have to take some food items for the Food bank (like a kg of rice, or pasta, or milk) but still, pretty good initiative and got us promoted to second tier in Portugal

My hometown club in Portugal did free tickets for all home games for home and away fans the whole year. The results were incredible we had the 6 biggest average attendee in Portuguese football despite playing in the 3rd tier, a semi-professional division. We got promoted to the 2nd tier of Portuguese football and are back to professional football after 11 years. The merchandising sales went through the roof, we could see scarves and shirts everywhere in the stadium something that is not that common outside the bigger clubs in Portugal and we plan or continue doing it next year. Right now it's still seen as an investment and it's not lucrative but it's a long-term plan. I have no idea if Fortuna-Dusseldorf saw what we did here or was or had the same idea but it's great to see!

Zeeland is probably the most popular FM streamer, I don't watch is content regularly, but I know him. This video got to my recommended, and I wanted to share my experience. Everyone in our hometown talks about the club and hyped for next season the the 2nd tier. The free tickets the investment and marketing changed the club and we belive in a few years we are going back to the first division where we belong.

Gotta say I love to see a video covering my hometown club, a significant part that maybe got a bit lost or was just not mentioned in the articles is the fact that the club was losing some fans because of decisions that were made in the recent past. I was born in Düsseldorf and lived there for 22 years, i loved going to the games when i was young, even though we were playing in the 4. Division. Now giving everybody poor or rich, young or old the possibility to celebrate football with their hometown team just makes me feel so incredibly happy and also proud to be a fan of Fortuna Düsseldorf.

There is more to the story then just free tickets. Fortuna Düsseldorf will invest 20% of the 45 million into their female and youth teams. Another 20% goes towards digitalisation and the arena. And lastly 10% will be used to finance other sports and a diverse set of sport programs in the city of Düsseldorf. Fortuna for all is about the club reconnecting to its fans and their city after some years of growing dissent between the club and fans.

My local Superliga club OB (Odense Boldklub) in Denmark has done this for at least a decade. We have 3-4 home games every season where sponsors buy the ticket, and you can pick them up for free. Granted, it's "only" 15.000 tickets, but the fact that it's been going on for so long tells me it's a good move for everyone.

With the food/drink income, I could kinda see that going up as well with people almost seeing it as a 'tip' of sorts. Like, if I'm not paying £50 for a ticket, I'm more open to using some of that money that I would have spent on a burger or whatever. Kinda like the idea of the universal basic income stimulating spending. How would a season ticket work though? If free tickets are a lottery then you're going to miss out a lot of the time and some people obviously want to go to every game. Maybe you'd have the freebies only account for a portion of the allocation or they'd open up only after the season tickets are factored in and after X amount of time of tickets being on general sale. That way if there's like 5000 empty seats, they can just comp those.

This has actually been done this season in Portugal, by Liga 3 (Portuguese 3rd league) champions União de Leiria. Unlike Fortuna's plan, União de Leiria didn't make a 3 year plan, they outright made all tickets for all games free. Like Fortuna they made deals with sponsors and bet heavily in merchandise sales, something that most 3rd league sides don't have. The main reason for it? To connect with the City. União de Leiria has struggled for long to get good attendences (even though they have a stadium with 24k capacity built for Euro 2004). The result? this season they beat the record for the biggest attendence in 3rd division match (just over 22k), they avereged almost 8k (over 5k more than when they were in the Primeira Liga a decade ago). Such average would put leiria 6th amogst Primeira Liga teams, only behind Benfica, Porto, Sporting, Vitoria SC and Sporting Braga. The president claims they covered the ticket sales with merchandise sales alone and they intend to keep free tickets in the second division next season.

It's possible that this is really a chance for clubs especially in germany to make it like Düsseldorf. As exsample, my favourite club and on of the rivals of Düsseldorf, MSV Duisburg in the 3rd division (unfortunately) already said the club is looking at the project with interest and if it works for them Duisburg could be walking the same path but only when we are back in the second division because you can't afford it in the 3rd division. But not only our club but many other clubs in germany already told that they will looking at Düsseldorf and know about the potential if this works like planned. I hope really they have success with it, even they are our rivals

Ticketmaster is a ripoff. Six Premier League teams are playing friendlies here in the US this summer: Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham, & Newcastle. Games are in Red Bulls Arena (Harrison, NJ), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia), FedEx Stadium (Washington DC), Mercedes Benz Stadium (Atlanta) & Exploria Stadium in Orlando Florida. Live in NJ, so looking at games in NJ, Philly, and possibly DC. The ticket prices are INSANE, especially through Ticketmaster. Worse, pricing alone indicates that there is a Chelsea SURCHARGE!! For example, the cheapest seats (nosebleed section, upper deck, last row) for the Brighton Chelsea game in Philly is $61, however, the next day in Philly, one tickets gets you 2 games - Fulham vs Brentford and Newcastle vs Aston Villa. The price for BOTH games is just $40! Why does it cost just $40 to see TWO matches, but costs $60 just to watch one Chelsea game? Same elsewhere, a surcharge for Chelsea games. Any seat that doesn't require an oxygen tank and a telescope to see the players, prices range from $150 to over $1,000 per ticket. Plus there is the $22 "fee" per ticket that Ticketmaster charges. Just another reason to HATE Chelsea! As of now looks like will go to the Brighton vs Newcastle game in NJ, and the doubleheader in Philly - although as a Brighton fan, would have preferred the Brighton-Chelsea game.

The food prices were already higher than usual before they decided to make tickets free. This, actually, is the closest thing you get to actual free stuff in this world. Fortuna doesnt try to recoup the money by food and drinks (and therefore you) but their sponsors are buying the tickets (so they actually still make ticket money) which allows those sponsors to act like a good samaritan and get some good publicity for gifting thousands of sports tickets to the citizens. It should work since Fortuna already has great attendance numbers, the club is not losing a penny, the sponsors have great publicity and the fans are more willing to spend that money on any other of Fortunas products.@@nathanolson3135

To be honest i don't mind paying to see live football in Ireland because Tickets are relatively cheap... but even if Dusseldorf brought in a free or pay what you can they might make a little more? Its interesting! Even in the future, if tickets aren't free they shouldn't be extortionate prices... football is the working class game, while the average ticket for a PL game is ridiculous... people can say its because of quality on show but even the premier league with all its quality will produce less exciting games than maybe your local club or 2. Bundesliga or League of Ireland or whoever! PL or top league games should not be so expensive!

I'd love to see Australian teams do this. No team ever fills out their stadiums (possibly except for the finals), because they're all built for cricket and NRL which get a much higher attendance. My local club for example, Central Coast Mariners, have an average attendance of 7,604 and their home stadium, which is one of the smallest in the league, seats 20,059. No team approaches 50% capacity of their stadiums for normal games.

Getting sponsorship to cover the cost of tickets so that they can then be given away to fans for free seems like a good idea. However some owners who perhaps also own a small oil or gas rich state might be able to use it as another way to funnel money into a club to get around FFP.

Definitely thinking outside the box, fair play Düsseldorf. Only criticisms I can think of would be: excluding your diehard fans who buy season tickets, they may prefer to have security knowing they have a decent seat rather than random draw, albeit free. Also, older generations would struggle because a Nokia 3310 is still cutting edge tech to them. However, if they have thought this far outside the box I'm sure they'll have something in place to deal with it.

thats crazy because economically speaking with those sponsor deals they could even lower their normal ticket prices. They getting the money anyway so if they lower the other tickets they draw even more fans to their games. Increase merch and beverages slightly for match day and you got yourself something close to 20%-40% income over the season which is insane considering matchday income is getting less and less all over europe.

The price of the ticket was not an issue back then and you could easily tout a ticket outside! The extortionate prices nowadays are the only barrier for me to regularly go to Premier League matches! However, I do go to see Welling United or Dulwich Hamlet every now and then (which is much more affordable)! £125 average ticket price for a Premier game is a joke! I can't do it, simple!

I don't know how season tickets work in European football but in America, year in and year out you sit in the same seats. So over the years you form a community in your section and you make friends and part of the fun is seeing your friends every other Sunday. A lottery for every game, for me at least, would be a big bummer because that community wouldn't be a thing. But maybe it's just different in Europe anyway.

Unfortunately, there is one thing you’re missing here. Fortuna Düsseldorf do not own their stadium - the City of Düsseldorf owns the Merkur Spiel-Arena. As a result, the city is the main beneficiary of food and alcohol sales inside of the stadium, not the club. So any increase in food and beverage sales as a result of the higher attendances wouldn’t significantly benefit Fortuna, although merchandise sales would.

I pay €365 for a seasonticket. It is pretty reasonable, even for some lower incomes if you are good with your money. But in some countries, the 'normal' people cant even afford to go to every game. That is so unfair by clubs. Going to games should be accesable for everyone. That results to the best atmospheres.

Düsseldorf can't get their Stadium full in the 2. Bundesliga. So they give the Tickets away for free and more people are there to buy Beer, Food and Merch. That's were the Money lies. That's what clubs in Germany hurt the most during the pandemic. Not the Ticketrevenue, but all the other income during a Matchday. Plus they probably get more new fans this way, maybe even people, that never would have paid a cent for a Football Match.

Okay, so let's say Liverpool did this. Wouldn't that just mean that the season ticket holders could sell their tickets on the black market for the same price as today? So it would just be a financial aid to the local population. When the prices are high it's because people are willing to pay it.

@@ilijastrainovic3141 That's wrong, the only club from Duisburg playing in the 3rd division is MSV Duisburg. KBC Duisburg is a non professional club somewhere in the lowest leagues in Germany if they still compete at all. But KBC may be a weird mixup with KSC (Karlsruher SC) who play in the 2nd tier but I don't know it just might be a mistake overall.

This is literally free to play video games. Game is free, but everything in game is expensive as fuck, but in your mind you justify those expenses, then just get used to buying things in-game. It also helps with player counts, which I imagine is the same here. More people in means a better atmosphere, means more fun, means more willing to spend money and invest in the team.

There are some problems with the idea of all tickets being free to all games. Everyone likes free stuff and people that aren't really arsed but wanna just go the the game as something to do because it's Free, whether local or tourists will take away tickets from the fans that genuinely want to go. Now lets just assume it's all just fans applying, now you have a situation where it's basically a raffle and the chances are a fan might never actually manage to get hold of a ticket all season and that might alienate their love for the team. There are negatives to such a system. If you try to counteract the raffle system by making it 1 per season, now you have the problem of building a hardcore fan base. How would you make diehard fans that stick with you through thick and thin if they can only watch you once a year.

I thought the idea was going to be with free tickets people are more likely to spend on food, drink, merchandise etc and if they get a lot more people through the door that could cover the cost or at least a decent chunk of it, the advertising on a website where you get the tickets is smart.

Lets say a top team does this exept for VIP section. 60k stadium. 60000x120x18 home games= 129600000. This would never work at a elite club who sells out every game. It is to hard to get this kind of money I think and that some People sells those free tickets. What they can do is give some free tickets away to certain organisations local

If people can get in free, does that make them less likely to go? In my line of work, I've found that charging something, even a small amount, makes people more likely to attend the event. Disclaimer: I'm an American, and I'm sure every culture is a little different.

Don’t believe that £125 is the average price of a ticket at a PL game…I’m calling BS! Edit: The most expensive season ticket in the league is Spurs at £2,025 which = £106 per game. And this is the MOST expensive!

That's not quite right. I'm from Düsseldorf and also had the same question. Fortuna answered like this: The season ticket holders and the die-hard fans(called "ultras" here in germany) will always have priority for getting tickets. It would be dumb for the club to punish their fans who always went to their games when the stadium was not full and the tickets were not free.
