Now that I've reached this milestone, it's time to continue doing what I enjoy doing most... some more chess videos for you guys :)
You will hear from me soon with some information about my 100k Subscribers stream, giveaways, Lichess tournament with prizes and more. See you soon :)
Rudolf Charousek was a Czech born Hungarian chess player. One of the top ten players in the world during the 1890s, he had a short career, dying at the age of 26 from tuberculosis. Reuben Fine wrote of him "Playing over his early games is like reading Keats's poetry: you cannot help feeling a grievous, oppressive sense of loss, of promise unfulfilled".
Charousek was born in Klein Lometz (modern Lomeček) near Prague, Bohemia. At the age of five weeks, his family moved to Debrecen, Hungary, where he became a naturalized Hungarian. They later moved to Miskolc where, at the age of 16, he learned to play chess. Studying law in Kassa, he is said to have copied out the voluminous Handbuch des Schachspiels by hand, unable to afford his own copy. Despite the lack of competition in Kassa, he soon became a strong player, and also qualified as a lawyer. In 1893 he entered a correspondence tournament organised by the Budapest newspaper Pesti Hirlap, in which he eventually shared first place with another up and coming Hungarian master, Geza Maroczy. He joined the Budapest chess club, where he frequently played with Maroczy and Gyula Makovetz, and convincingly defeated Gyozo Exner in a match.

This game was used in a short story written in 1947 by Kester Svendsen called 'Last Round'. It was included in 'The Chess Companion' by Irving Chernev in 1968. I have re-read the story and re-played the game many times and often wondered if the game was fabricated or taken from an actual score. Thank you for solving the mystery!

I used to face the Danish a lot as a junior by one of my contemporaries, and the strongest kid in the county [who nearly won the open county champs aged 16] played it. The latter bemoaned the Danish endgame you mention after cxb2 etc, but personally speaking I always found as Black that psychologically 3.c3 d5 is much more powerful. White will often allow the Capablanca line where you have better chance to outplay someone, but some like to go for 4. e5 dxc3 5. Nxc3 c6, which is just superb. Many others just hoover the centre and the Queenless middlegame even allows Black to give a pawn for good play.

Found a different checkmate involved sacking dark square bishop by taking the pawn with check, then black responds with the darksqbishop or pawn, the queen to e8, and pawn captures to queen with double check!

Queen or knight can block on e7
@JetPilotJim
@JetPilotJim 6 жыл бұрын
The block does not work, because the king would be in check from the newly promoted queen on e8. I was coming into the comments to say the same thing Abraham! Bd6, then black captures with pawn or bishop (doesn't matter), then Qe8, black captures with rook or bishop (again, doesn't matter), then fxe (edit: and promotes to queen or rook) with double check and checkmate!
@gagginglemer1
@gagginglemer1 6 жыл бұрын
I thought it would work too, but Bxd6+ followed by Ne7 or Qe7 blocks this. This happens before the queen is promoted.
@JetPilotJim
@JetPilotJim 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I see what you're saying. But assuming after Bxd6 it's ...Ne7, then Bxe7+ ...Qxe7, Qxe7#. Did I miss a move that time? (I'm assuming I did, I'm a noob, lol)

at 5:22, why not Re7? white can respond with Nd5, black responds with c6, white can allow black to capture the rook as it is defended by the queen. After that, white cannot push the pawn forward as the queen is blocking it.

White can play Qxg4. The material is equal, but a pawn in d6, the queen in the g file, black square bishop aiming at h6 and a knight that can jump to d5. Black can't defend in that position.
