My grandpa was in 5th Group in Vietnam, and an Infantry Drill Sergeant when the Infantry Center was at Polk, and the only emotion I’ve ever seen him express was when I came home wearing a CIB. He still makes fun of me for being a leg, and I wasn’t a special guy like him, but two CIBs in 3 generations is pretty cool.

Infantry AIT at Ft. Polk 1965 went to Vietnam 1967 and was handed a M-16 which I had never seen before having been trained with M-14 and M14E2. Had to ask the guy that had been in country for two weeks how to operate it. Found out how unreliable the early M-16 was so I bought a M-2 Carbine from an ARVN for $60.00 with ammo. Yeah great training back then.

They really should have used the correct ammo and used chrome lined barrels from the start. Jamming m-16’s got a lot of people killed

My Dad was the XO of the 824th OrdSupDep at Camp Polk 1943. He would have hated the M-16. His 2nd favorite weapon was the M-2 carbine. And he shipped one home in parts. Unfortunately it was stolen twenty years later. I hated the M-16 as well. In the Coast Guard, 1991, half our 16s were refurbished junk from Vietnam

@@baronedipiemonte3990if your dad liked the M2 he would have loved the M16A1. It improved on it in virtually every way.

@Sumit Kumar When we came across a small village in a free fire area like the Arizona (20 miles SW of DaNang) we put the old people and children on helicopters to relocate and burned the place down. All males between 15-45 were always gone. They were the ones setting booby traps for us. VC were very active there. We never treated the women and children bad.

I did not have white name tags back in late 66. Funky black on od green. All of the name tags were changed. Rank still was regular gold color on sleve. In 69 went to black tag at your neck no longer on arm. Still black on od green name and Army on front of uniforms. I was at Ft. Benning for bct. C 9 3.

I remember it was 5 weeks for infantry AIT at Ft.Benning in 1986 for me.The rest you learned when you got to your unit.Mines was in Germany where you learned everything in your battallion, company, platoon, and squad SOP.Later when i was in the National Guard my company was getting ready to deploy to Iraq in 2006.The pre-deployment training was almost 90 days plus then more training about 3 weeks in Kuwait on IED and MOUT.The funny thing about that time was how few guys actually had CIBs in my unit.I got mines in Panama during Just Cause, the training in my Airborne battallion was 7 months until we got the alert to go into combat. My unit did live fire excercises in conjunction with security missions that almost resulted in combat. From my experience the training in Panama was more intense than Germany,Ft.Carson,or even NTC.

So he learned on a reliable M14 but was issued a fussy M16 once he got to Vietnam? If where you are going it isn't being used, what is the point?

Basic Combat Training Fort Jackson 1975 When we first lined up with our duffel bags - the first thing the drill sargeant did was tell us ' when I say up - you pick your duffel bag up over your head - when I say down - you put your duffel bag on the ground ' then he command loudly for about 5 minutes straight : UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! UP ! DOWN ! ... And we also quickly learned the front leaning rest position ... Back then when we did the figure 8 training ( run dodge & jump ), where you run through the two gates and jump over the water pit in the middle, we had the person who was next in line - run behind us hitting us with their belt ... Does anybody who went to Fort Jackson remember the dam dam area ? The sand pit that you had to belly crawl down one hill through the sand pit then up the hill on the other side ? If you raised up even the slightest then you had to start all over ...

Frigging Rookies. Try AIT at Ft . Polk. I ended up being permant party. Oops. And I was a humble Ammo bearer. But made 3 pay grades in 18 months. And that's not for shinny boots. Remember our Code of Honor. And a salute to our victorious dead. Bring back the draft . Every person should serve a mandatory 2 years for our country. A given. Have a great day.
