Every summer, ice cream shops nationwide stock up on cones. Whether it's cake, sugar, or waffle, nearly 70% of the cones sold in US stores come from one company. What started 100 years ago as a small shop with just one hand-powered oven has become an empire. Today, Joy Baking Group churns out 10m cones per day. So how did Joy Cone come out on top? And what does the family of the inventor of the first original ice cream cone think about it?

I used to go to doumar's almost daily when I lived in Norfolk Virginia. I sat down with mr. Doumar and several other Elders of the doumar family and they told me the story of the ice cream cone. Not only that the ice cream machine was there also wow how awesome

I grew as a young boy, just a couple blocks away from this place. One of my young buddies is a principle staff member now, 60 years later. On occasion, we would go by Joy Cone around 1962 and they would give us some free product to munch on. 😋

I love Doumar's. I've only been there a few times in my life and all were over 20 years ago when we would visit my uncle when he lived there. Would love to go back one day.

Great story. Shows two completely different approaches to solving a similar need, neither one wrong, both with their points.

Doumars looks so cool. I love his hand making cone machine. Reminds me of some Chinese food street vendors who make them round pancakes. So awesome.

We have a local ice cream place that is just up the road. They make their own waffle cones and there is just nothing like them. I usually get a frappe and an empty cone. It’s a meal! 😂

I miss my friends that used to work at the joy ice cream cone Factory in Pennsylvania they used to come home with boxes and boxes of waffle cones and everything. And in the summertime we would set up all the old hand-crank and electric ice cream makers on the side of the road and we would sell hundreds of dollars of fresh homemade Amish ice cream. Ask KidMed Bank we used to love our Amish Neighbors

Baskins has those waffle cones dipped in chocolate at the rim area and chopped peanut or sprinkles and then a few scoops of delicious ice cream and fortunately i can resist that temptation except for an actual treat maybe 3 times a year and not make it a way of life. 90% of the people who go should not go so much!!

Inner-city and predominantly African-American communities need more entrepreneurs to make these areas economically viable. High schools and community colleges that serve these areas need to teach entrepreneurship and small business development skills. The government already offers Small Business Administration loan’s tailored to minority and women applicants, so if young people were taught and encouraged to become producers instead of just consumers, we might see more female- and minority-owned businesses in underserved neighborhoods. If this guy with a little waffle maker and a bit of business savvy can go on to make an empire in ice cream cones, then just about anything is possible. Inner-city youth must be raised early on to start thinking like independent entrepreneurs in their communities. Look around, look for a sorely needed service or product and then just start providing it. This happens every day around the country. Just do it!

@@smrtrthnu1571 Or, let’s just sit around and feel sorry for ourselves and let democrats throw minorities an occasional bone once in awhile in exchange for their votes. Let’s not get creative, show some initiative, start businesses in the inner-city, and improve the people and their communities. Yeah, let’s just keep everything just as it is right now 👍🏻
