Joe challenges me with his BMC and I'm a bit worried! Will the VTX get left in the dust or will its aerodynamic profile win the day?

I ride the Catrike 700 and I find that many riders cannot fathom being matched or passed by an older dude on an "Old Mans Trike." It is clearly an ego thing on their part sadly. They will burn by me with a lot of energy and I can see the their bikes wobble as they lose the pedaling efficiency. I usually catch up and cruise by at a really great pace as I am conserving energy. I ring my little bell and rarely see them again further along. It was not like that for the first few months of riding the 700. The more I rode, the more in-tune I became with the 700. I even removed my big third ring because I never use it. Climbing hills and starting from the stop is still slower but the top end is hard to beat. I really enjoy your videos and you both have really taught me a lot about riding in general. Thank you so much for taking the time to do all of this.

Thanks for watching, Lawrence and thanks for the comment! Even though I've been riding a "fast" trike for years now, I'm still surprised by what it can do on the flats.

I am a 71 year old guy who rides a Catrike 700 for speed and a 559 for long cruising rides. I blow by everybody in my 700. Folks are amazed the trike is an extraordinary piece of equipment …so fast and so stable and so aerodynamic. People ask me where I have my e assist and I tell them it is run by a an old man with and old natural motor. They look the trike over and just shake their heads.

@@markfeldman6509 I was asked about an electric motor the other day. This fella, nice fella, commented that the Electric motor I had was fast. I don't have one. I have a Catrike Expedition as well. My wife rides that rarely. I am 53 and I am looking forward to years of riding with a recumbent trike.

I used to commute 23 miles each way to work with a 1500 ft elevation gain going and 1000ft return. I have a Cruzbike recumbent and an older DF road bike. Over the distance the recumbent had higher speeds on the flats and downhill but lower speeds on the long climbs so that it was a minute or two slower in total time on average over multiple runs. The key that made the most difference was stop lights. If I was unlucky that run was slower. Cool to see that the trike has a similar results.

Hey, Gary! Yes, the trike is definitely challenged on any kind of climbing.

That was too neat! A bicycle advantage is that both thrust and load pulses tend to center more closer to center of tires. A trike advantage is that frontal-area aerodynamic drag can be less.

That was very interesting, I was sure the road bike would be at an advantage. What was the grade of your test track?. I would like to see the same test with Joe on the Trike, and a test going up a rise also. I notice that my wife, on her VTX, has good acceleration at speed on a slight down grade. There seems to be a "Sweet Spot" where the VTX can overcome a road bike. The advantage is eliminated if there is any increase in grade. I assume your next video will be after the upcoming Atmospheric River unless you demonstrate Bikes and Trikes in torrential downpours.HA

Hey Evan! Yes, it started on a slight downhill, flattened out pretty quickly and then at the end there was just a very slight upgrade. I've experienced that issue while on upgrades as well. Racing a bike up a hill would be disastrous for the VTX. :)

You looked to be starting in a much higher gear than you should have- and higher than the bike's gear at the start. Can you get a nosecone for that trike to test for aerodynamic improvement? I've seen touring trikes with them before. Would be great to see just what a difference they make.

Hey Ross! I started in my large chain ring, so I wouldn't have to try and shift while holding the camera. It did cause a slow start off the line, but it only took a few seconds before I was at a good cadence. I have a fairing for my Rans Rocket and it does help with the speed, but for all the trouble (smell of plastic-extra weight-lack of visibility), not as much as you'd think! I only get about 2 mph more speed with the fairing.

I have to ask if the rider of the road bike is fully conditioned for the upright riding style. I found when riding recumbents all the time my conditioning on an upright suffered. I currently ride an old Catrike 700, but also ride a 6 speed Brompton folder on grocery runs. I can get faster speeds on the Brompton if there's no headwind. However I recently had a heart attack about 3 months ago and all my comparisons are null and void until I more fully recover.

this is not surprising. the aero of the racing trike is much better than a road bike...akin to a time trial bike, but probably still better. i ride both road bike and a catrike 700 and the 700 has a much higher top speed. maybe 3 to 5mph better, although it does have covered front wheels and aero disc wheel. the road bike is still faster on a hilly route but not much. the 700 is way more aero and you can lay down nearly as much watts as when standing on a road bike. ppl make the mistake of assuming a road biker can generate the same watts as a triker when sitting. BIG MISTAKE. the fully reclined facing trike is even better for wattage than more upright trikes, at least for more athletic riders. imagine if the vtx was as light as that road bike lol.

I’d really like to try the VTX with wheel covers like you have on your 700, Andy. Even if I just picked up a couple of MPH’s it would make an already impressively fast trike even more impressive. From all reports, it sounds like the VTX and the 700 are very similar in the speed department. Do you know what kind of speed boost you’re getting from the wheel covers?

How is that VTX is 36# ? ICE specs it at 30#.
@bikestrikesrazors
@bikestrikesrazors 8 ай бұрын
My guess is that they’re basing their weight on a stripped-down trike. All I can tell you is that once I have all the needed gear to actually ride the trike, mine comes in at around 36 pounds. Of course it’s always possible to build up lighter wheels, get lighter pedals, leave off the rear fender and head rest and so on to lighten the trike up.

The guy on the bike was not sprinting, he was always in the hoods never in the drops you can also tell because the trike guy was winded but the bike guy was not. I have both a trike and road bike and the bike is 2-3 miles per hour faster on average.
@johnsimion2893
@johnsimion2893 Жыл бұрын
I noticed that, too. Staying on the hoods in a sprint makes no sense. The road bike is already aerodynamically disadvantaged, but the drops are there to reduce the drag. He hit a "wall of wind" (6:17) because he shouldn't be on the hoods when racing!
@bikestrikesrazors

Hi Matt and thanks for your comment! I asked Joe why he wasn't in the drops and he said he thought he generated more power from the hoods. We'll try it again with him in the drops!
@fredsage9122
@fredsage9122 Жыл бұрын
You need a more competent bike rider for an accurate comparison. This rider had his hands on the tops instead of the drops and as a result, was sitting almost bolt upright. There's a huge aerodynamic drag penalty as compared to hands on the drops in an aerodynamic tuck. With no regard to aerodynamics, (the trike's main advantage), there was no way the bike was going to win.

Once again, Joe is demonstrating his lack of competency. He's more comfortable on the tops than the drops, but there's no way he develops more power on the tops. Look at the pro's sprinting; they're all down on the drops in an aerodynamic position. Look at it logically; on the tops you're just maintaining your position. There's no way you can pull up or push down on the tops. However, in the drops, you're easily able to push and pull coindicent with your cadence to increase power because you're actually grabbing the handlebar with as much grip as you can muster. In fact, while on the drops you can brace your forearm against the handlbar to gain additional leverage. You need a better rider for a valid comparison.
