I am 40, I am white, I am 6'7. At 250 I need to be super athletic to jump. At 225 I get up and throw down lame white boy dunks, now going down to 200 for the summer as I feel the best at that weight. I have so much respect for Zion the way he gets that body up in the air. I can't even comprehend how he does it.

I’m 6’6 195 with around a 39-41 inch vert and it all boils down to 3 things, The amount of times you simply spend jumping, how strong you are (for your body weight), your raw genetics
@Dellzions

4th thing the amount of time you are willing to sacrifice to dedicating yourself to learning your body and the overall process, including the knowledge you are willing to gain for specialized training or getting a trainer w/said knowledge already and willing to learn more, (perfect example is Isaiah Rivera and his trainer)

@@Frxnando That‘s not an excuse for being this unbelievably unathletic bro…. please do some plyometrics, because I‘m 6 foot tall, 16 years old, 155 lbs and i can throw down dunks off two aswell as off one and throw down lobs and everything (I even posterized a couple of guys). And it‘s not THAT much of a genetic thing because I‘m turkish, persian and I might have a little black in me, but you get the memo. Especially at your height you only need like a 20 inch vert(maybe even less) to just dunk a basketball comfortably, while I‘m here with a 35, maybe 36 inch vert. So yeah bro just get after it, train like 2 times a week for 3 weeks and you‘ll be able to dunk. Trust me, it works. I believe in you!

On the point about relative strength; I believe you are conflating relative strength with relative muscle mass, when you say in order to increase relative strength, you either need to bulk or cut. Relative strength is influenced by a number of factors outside of sheer muscle mass, and you can increase relative strength as an experienced athlete without any change in bodyweight, or even any change in body composition.
@JiggyHills
@JiggyHills 12 күн бұрын
I agree with your underlying points. You don't absolutely need to bulk per say, but it does make things significantly easier for getting stronger. If you're fat, you absolutely need to cut though (in the context of VJ). Might I add, my bulk range was from 200-500 calories a day which is relatively small (would be considered a lean bulk). The truth is the average person doesn't have the ideal body composition. I also wouldn't assume the average viewer is an experienced athlete. I agree with your general points though. Appreciate your take.
@olakunleakinpelu3669
@olakunleakinpelu3669 6 күн бұрын
"Relative strength is influenced by a number of factors outside of sheer muscle mass" To expand, those factors are: muscle fiber composition (fast twitch vs slow twitch fibers), CNS (central nervous system) synaptic fire rate and nerve coordination. Everyone starts out with varying amounts of development of these factors, but the way you train can further enhance them to develop explosive strength. To do so you need to prioritize maximum muscle recruitment during training, BUT high recovery phases and rest periods AND frequency of training. That means your training sessions should be intense and frequent but short. That's because the muscle fibers and synaptic fire rates required for explosive strength are recruited at a relatively high recovered state. If your sessions are too long, the body pivots to using more slow twitch fibers and slower synaptic fire rates due to fatigue. First start with body weight movements that are very explosive (box jumps, jump squats etc), when you do lift, high but manageable loads with low reps (think 5 x 3 or 4x4) and lots of rest in between sets. Your training sessions should be less than 45 min and you should feel like you could do it again the next day. Optimal frequency would be every other day for novices and daily but shorter sessions for intermediate to advanced athletes. Genetics is also a factor, but since you can't control that I don't touch on it.

Just saw this and was very informative. I'm 6”1 in shoes hovering around 220-224 pre injury dunking off 2 what would you think about me wanting to get to 180 rather than 190 for the speed and to have a higher vertical
@JiggyHills
@JiggyHills 15 күн бұрын
I think you shouldn’t chase the number on the scale too much. If you cut to 190 and are super lean, getting to 180 will only cause you to lose muscle. However, if you still have a decent amount of fat to lose at 190 you should definitely go for it. I recommend cutting to sub 200 and monitoring your strength and leanness as you continue to cut. You wanna be somewhere are 10-13% body fat… possibly a little lower

Based off what i'm reading, I wouldn't say cut or even intentionally bulk. I would focus on getting as strong as possible and that may result in you putting on a few pounds of muscle. Just focus on getting a lot stronger at your body weight, but a few pounds might be put on during the process. Don't forget to keep those max effort jump reps up. Best of luck my guy.

@rell4219 12 күн бұрын
I’m about the same height and weight. I just started dunking at 34 yrs old because I realized that it’s not about weight as much as body fat percentage and strength in the right muscles. To jump higher, focus on Hip Thrust, Squats, calf raises, Sit ups and Pull ups. You’ll gain more muscle and but should also be loosing fat by doing cardio like playing basketball at least every other day. Nate Robinson for example, was about 185 lbs at 5’8 Barefoot and was ridiculously explosive with about A 44 inch Vertical. Some of it is genetics and most of us aren’t equipped like Nate but we can for sure get our Vert to about 35 inches max and be able to dunk (if you have atleast A 5’10 wingspan)

I like this question. The goal is always to get stronger and overload your body over time. If you can do that at the same weight, then you’re probably around your ideal weight. You have to continue to push your strength limits, that should be your focus. As long as you’re strong and lean you should be fine. Only you will know how far you can take it, through experience. Once you feel it’s suffering you can dial down your weight. Good luck 🤞🏾

I’m assuming you don’t go to a gym yet. I’d probably mostly focus on practicing your jumping form and getting in those reps. It’ll go along way. You can also implement some Plyometrics like sprinting, depth jumps, etc. Jumping rope is good but you will need more intense stuff like max effort jumps and plyos. Once you’re ready for the weight room, the next step would be to get super strong. If you’re a little heavy you can slim out but you’re still young as long as you’re a healthy weight don’t worry about cutting too much right now.

Strength relative to bodyweight is the only kind of strength that matters in this context though. It’s like calling a elite rock climber like Alex Megos weak because he’s skinny and can’t lift as much as someone like world’s strongest man winner Brian Shaw. They may not be able to lift as much weight, but Alex can do one arm pull ups with ease while Brian would struggle to do even a single regular pull up! And it’s stupid to say that someone is athletic but not strong since strength is an incredibly important component of athleticism. To be athletic you have to generate a lot of force very quickly. But it doesn’t matter how quickly you can generate force if you’re not strong enough to generate much force in the first place! And A.I. was a star football player in high school. How many elite football players do you know who are weak?

@@jamiedevine Well I guess you're an athletic guy. It's very possible for you to dunk, you just need to practice and get used to it. I'm 5'9 and I've always been wanting to dunk but I could only reach a quarter of the net. 😭

Ja is definitely not the strongest. He’s the lightest and doesn’t jump that much higher than the other two guys. Zion is definitely the strongest relative to his bodyweight because he’s got a propel 300 pounds over 40 inches in the air. Easy way to look at this is to throw 100 pounds on Ja. How high will he jump?😅

Yeah I hear the Zion case it’s definitely possible, maybe even likely. It’s possible I was just initially shocked my Ja’s strength. Also, when Zion was 300 pounds he definitely wasn’t jumping the same like we expected when he first came into the league.

@@JiggyHills for sure. Still crazy to propel your body 42+ inches at at least 260 pounds like we saw him jumping during that Duke combine. I’m really interested in this suck overall. Would love to see strength numbers for these guys. Obviously a lot of them are untrained, but I bet you they could push a lot of weight squatting relative to their weight if they were trained.
