The Illegal Big Cats of Instagram

Buying illegal wild animals in Kuwait is, as one local puts it, "as easy as acquiring a cupcake." Pets have long been used as status symbols the world over, but citizens of the Gulf take the prize when it comes to keeping the most exotic, controversial species-most commonly, "big cat" cubs.
International law governing Kuwait and other Gulf states forbids the import and sale of wild animals, yet the sight of supercars being driven around with a cheetah in the front seat is starting to become commonplace on Arab Instagram feeds.
Although there are legal ways to bring an animal into Kuwait, paying people off along the way is easier. Lion, cheetah, and tiger cubs are in the highest demand, fetching up to $15,000 each through black market agents. More often than not, the owners have little idea how to care for these creatures, which have no history of domestication and quickly become unmanageable-even lethal-once they're fully grown.
In Big Cats of the Gulf, VICE investigates the area's flourishing trade in animal trafficking and how it impacts the depleting wildcat populations of Central and East Africa. We gain exclusive access to Kuwait's biggest Instagram star of the big cat phenomenon and hear first-hand of the deadly consequences of the business-both for the animals and their owners.

Don Calico What you see as wild is false, Iv worked with "wild" lions in South Africa and they are trapped in their small pockets of land surrounded by people. Every Game reserve/National Park in South Africa has a fence around them including Kruger. They are monitored and sometimes relocated to other game reserves.

not implying him specifically, but the elite in that area tend to have that attitude. dictators, royalty, and the wealthy and connected killing their brothers and relatives over politics or territory, etc. etc. he named his lion cub after a military title only held by saddam hussein and says so with pride. much like the image of the mafia we so often see portrayed in the godfather or the sopranos, I.E., "you're my son and i love you but you're a shame on the family and a screw up. it's just business." he probly did love those cats, but when it came down to business it was them or him. not excusing it, not saying it's right or i agree with it. just saying.

Many years ago my school went to a zoo backstage to learn about what it's like to work with wild animals and one of my strongest memories was when a adult male lion met my eyes and I felt how he could see and read my soul and it really felt like now he knew me better than I know myself. It was just a split second but the chills I got made my body want to freeze up and it really felt like he knew all my weaknesses. Lions are not domestic even if they were born and raised in captivity. Heck even housecats still after thousands of years as pets still have a very intact preydrive that gets triggered as soon as something acts as prey. This whole video was so uncomfortable.

Do you really think she would have been allowed these people's time if she waltzed in complaining and criticising? Of fucking course not. THEY call the shots, SHE's there to report on it. You build an acceptance with people to get the story, and then say what you like about it afterwards. That is journalism. Some of these comments are so amazingly idiotic.

@SomethingReallyStrange - Because he's a sadist and knew the *pregnant* (and therefore more dangerous) lioness would mount her as a naturally dominant gesture. That was a huge risk, as (all) animals are unpredictable, making the reporter prey, and he seemed to enjoy watching it. He has no conscience. He's sick. His justification tht the lions (and cheetahs and other wild animals) are living a better life than they would in the wild, is unsubstantiated and based on what *he* thinks is a "good life" as a human. He and others like him are denying these creatures from living their lives as nature intended, in the wild. Kidnapping them, breeding them in captivity and forcing them to live in cages and pens, being restrained and not providing them the daily enrichment, the mental and physical stimulation they need and would get, if in nature, in prides and social communities, is reprehensible, cruel and inhumane. As for his claim that a lion might not eat for 10 days? That's normal in the wild. They need about 11-25 lbs of meat per day. After a kill of a wildebeest or gazelle, a lion may gorge and eat up to 100 lbs, then fast for anywhere between several days up to a week. A big cat can go for up to 2 weeks without food, but like most mammals, only 3-4 without water. These people, as the breeder admitted, never did research on lions and other big cats to understand their behaviour and needs. Who in their right mind would do that, with the risk they present? The maid who was mauled and killed is evidence of that ignorance and that they're ill-prepared to be guardians of wild cats in domestic situations. They'd lie to cover it up - because they know it's wrong. That's probably part of the thrill. They think they're above the law. These big cats and other wild ainmals are doing fine, left in nature, except for humankind's encroachment upon and destruction of these animals' natural habitat. That's still no excuse for ripping them out of it, from their families, to live in houses, pens and cages, interacting mostly with humans, suppressing their innate urges to hunt (except for the occasional controlled one of a rabbit, as seen). He and other idle, oil-rich young men do this for vanity, as a status symbol, to boost their self-esteem in a misguided, unconscienble attempt to seem relevant in a world where materialism and mass consumerism reign supreme. It's despicable! They're rich and have connections, and probably pay off corrupt authorities to look the other way, so they face no consequences for breaking the law, imprisoning these top predators of the animal kingdom. It's truly sad, for the animals, and as a reflection of how self-absorbed and greedy we've become.

If you look at the picture at 4:00 and the one at 27:20, you can see it’s almost the same blurred shape but very distinguishing is that the man in both pictures has the same mark on his left shoulder, in his left leg there is a square in a pocket that matches in both pictures and you can also see that the color of his pants is exactly the same, but even more distinguishing is that if you look at the lion for identifying features, they are both the same in both pictures as the lion has a mark slightly above his right eye and on the top of his head he has a a line that matches in both pictures and I see the one above his head, not on his forehead if you need a further detail, his shirt has a bend near the collar and it’s a dark shadow caused by the lighting, this mark also appears in both pictures

They may also have staged the picture to make it seem it was him to protect someone else but it seems unlikely, if I could read the title in the Kuwait news we could further analyze this

I've been to Swakkls (however you spell it) house in Kuwait. He had 2 lions on the roof. And a monkey named Sonbel. The Lions killed his maid.

That reporter "drank the koolaid" a bit too many times to be a responsible journalist. Those beautiful animals will never be completely domesticated and will turn on the idiots that think they can own them. I won't feel a bit bad for them when they become lion chow.

Yeah that was obviously a ploy to get in. They knew what they were doing. If I was in her shoes I would do the same thing. You think they'd just let some angry dude in there?? I hoped most people would read between the lines and use their head, and it seems most ppl get it. If you want to criticize the piece, be more specific and argue what is worth it. her behavior makes sense, but was it worth it, etc.

Arabs have been domesticating animals in ancient times. Wow are you guys acting surprised when in America there are literally shows for animals to act in a certain way. Like Dolphins and Wales in Waterparks as well as MGM lion shows.

This guy is positively sick, he has absolutely no love for those animals, he claimed to have loved them and burned them ruthlessly at the first sign of distress. I would rather die before harm coming my pet dog's way. And that is love not burning up your pets. He's simply doing it for his sick sadism using more than 1000 years old customs, which should be left in the past itself, as an excuse to justify his actions.
