When Season 1 first hit the airwaves, True Detective was a force to be reckoned with. With an cast starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and a story unlike any of seen before, True Detective was truly lightning in a bottle. Though as we move into Seasons 2 and 3, True Detective began a downward spiral. Can Season 4 of True Detective, Night Country, recapture the magic of Season 1?

I think I am the only person who actually loves season 2 I have watched it every year since it came out . I can totally understand why some people don't like it but I think its just as good as the first season and it even does its female characters right. She has flaws, problems issues and is shown as weaker to the dangerous men, she's not a strong, empowered , stunning , brave and superior women like modern Hollywood keeps trying to insist is an average woman

One of the things I most liked about the first season is that it had a hint--a suggestion--that something supernatural might be going on. That possible presence is so subtle that it can be as easily explained--perhaps more easily explained--as mere natural goings-on. And yet the show left me with the feeling that there was something supernatural underlying everything. This was done so masterfully and nothing in the subsequent two seasons approached it. The new season... I've only seen two episodes, I'll see where it's going. But nothing will top that first season, it's perfection.

Great observation. The first season is quite a bit of esoteric elements that weave throughout the story. That’s the magic of the first season. The connection that the show writers were able to convey between the natural and supernatural was masterfully done.

My wife and I have watched the first four episodes of season 4. It's not bad, but it is definitely leaning more into the science fiction/ supernatural angle. I am more into that stuff than my wife, but I am sure we will finish it just to see how it ends. It is definitely more in your face than season 1 in that regard.

I just rewatched season 1 three days ago for like the fifth time in as many years. I totally agree, it's not so much that it went downhill as it is that the first season was this bizarre masterpiece that the other seasons don't even try to top. The other seasons are still really good, and I'm honestly pretty excited for the upcoming season my instincts are telling me it's gonna be good based on what I've heard so far, and for Jodi Foster to come out for it - I trust she wouldn't without good reason.

A big difference between season 1 and 2 was that S1 had Rust with his abstract and bleak ideas, but it also had Marty to be the balancing act everyman who'd give him a tired look and tell him "Stop saying odd shit/I'm begging you to shut the fuck up." Rust was an anomaly in that world, where the other characters didn't know how to handle him. Where in S2 it felt like every character was trying to be Rust. They all talked depressing & weird about life and they all had endless "odd shit" conversations with each other. Vince Vaughn straight-up talked like an alien. It didn't have the regular human element that made season 1 feel real. And on top of that, Rust was actually FUNNY. Barely anybody in season 2 was ever funny.

There's a saying in the music business that sums up this problem pretty good it goes you have your whole life to write your first album but only 6 months to write you second
@PalaceDude
@PalaceDude 2 ай бұрын
Amen, but with most successful artists out there, you'll always find they actually made more than one "album", before they got to release their first. It goes for musicians, writers or any other creator. Artists like Radiohead have all these unreleased records, and Quentin jumping from script to script, even though he would be focusing on a singular one to release next. And with that intensive work is how artists build a style, a signature. As rare as it is, some just keep on creating, non-stop, even if they are in the middle of a specific craft, so much so when they release one, they'd already be on their way to release the next one. With Nic, however, it's like everyone keeps saying, it was lightning in a bottle, maybe a once in a lifetime thing for him. He put his all into just that one thing, and then nothing came after, even after all these years. I can't tell what his thing is, he doesn't have a style or signature. The first season is just a pile of inspirations (a pretty ingenious one at that), with the help of another creative mind that brought it to screen. But other than that, Nic just didn't make enough works, or have enough time, to mold his style.

One thing that the first season did was subvert the "Breaking Bad" trope which was popular at the time. I.e, take a relatable and likeable character, and gradually have them get more and more evil, until eventually the audience WANTS them to fail. True Detective did the opposite: it took two hard-to-like characters and gradually made you understand and care for them, before finally giving them an amazing redemption arc. That's what was so special to me about the first season.
@eddiemalvin

I think people don’t emphasize enough that Season 1, while not technically supernatural, had a creepy atmosphere where you couldn’t shake the feeling that the cult MIGHT not be totally full of $hit at times. The ambiguity made it unique and deeper than most cop dramas. The next two seasons totally lacked that. Season 4 looks to have it back, but hopefully not too far in the other (overtly supernatural) direction.

I was initially intrigued by the premise of S4, but it really just feels like they (the writers) have tried to re-tread the same ground. Slightly paranormal murder. A past unsolved murder. A contentious relationship between the two investigators. They have all “content” but the dialogue and characterization feel like cheap copies of Rust and Marty. And the supporting cast, especially the previous sheriff, is comically inept and nasty. It’s just silly.
@dashx1103

Yeah ... but at the end of the day, there really weren't "unnatural malevolent forces" in S1 -- just f*cked up bad guys and "Lovecraftian" overtones. I remember some people being unhappy that there was no cosmic entity revealed in the end. They expected Cthulhu or a similar supernatural monster to show up. They got Errol Childress instead. I guess they forgot that the inspiration for those overtones in True Detective wasn't Lovecraft.
@Michael-bn1oi

Yeah I fully believe if season 2 has come first, people would've loved it, but season 1 was just way too good, and was near impossible to live up to. It was also so different without the same actors, but also because it really changed the format. Season 3 is considered a return to form because it at least went back to a buddy cop situation with a horrific case that spanned decades of story telling, while season 2, which I loved, as it's own thing, is off because it's more about a mob guy and a crooked cop, and is a very linear story. Pizalato said season 1 was a murder mystery because he couldn't pitch a story about 2 guys riding around talking about life, and yet for some reason when he had a chance to do a second season, sort of took that whole element of two interesting characters talking life right out of it. It would've been much easier to say the formula is 2 actors playing 2 cops with a case spanning decades and having to discuss the case in interrogation like season 1, but he erased all formula, which kind of just made it a completely disconnected show under the same name. Heck it probably would've been better received if he had changed the title from true detective.

The 'newness' of season one can never be repeated. HBO had become a place where creators could go to produce great TV. Count off all the great shows from the previous decade: The Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood. True Detective was different in almost every way, telling the story of a murder investigation inside the story of the relationship between the detectives. No matter how much Pizzolato took from his influences, it was mesmerizing TV. That is hard to duplicate.

I think even if season 2 was about Rust and Marty, it wouldn't have landed. I think what made the story great was all of it's themes, actors, crew, plot and setting working together in that moment and by the end of the show it started to feel exhausted. There really was no where else for the show to go afterwards that wouldn't have been disappointing. I tend to think of the show as an 8 hour movie. It's self contained and nearly perfect.

rust had such a good backstory as well. being forced to do undercover work with some drug gang which in turn fried his brain which in turn let the show writers put a lot of weird visual stuff into the story. all that tied in nicely with the satanic/cult storyline while still remaining grounded in reality. i think another key thing about season 1 is how the story is told in flashbacks. it allows the characters in the flashbacks to act more normal and not have to explain everything in detail to each other. all i remember from season 2 was the characters talking about stuff for the first 4 episodes and mentioning so many names . it didnt help there were 4 different main characters to keep track of as well

Nic Pizzolatto had more time to plan for Season 1, and less time for the second, since it was released just one year later. Rust's overdone, pretentious dialogue made sense for the character, since he was grieving his daughter, but it isn't quite as effective when you slap it on random characters.

I was really worried about Vince Vaughn's inclusion, but he ended up being the character I liked the most in the entire season 2 and he gave a great performance. His last scenes walking in the desert were fantastic. I think one of the biggest flaws in Season 2 was that they would sometimes name-drop really minor characters that had only been shown for a few seconds episodes (i.e. weeks) earlier as ultimately being key players, and you as an audience member had no idea who they were talking about because you had no reason to remember them. It made it really difficult to follow. Season 3 was amazing and I loved just as much, if not more, than Season 1.

Vaughn's acting itself wasn't bad, he just felt really miscast. @@Olderaccount17 Well I apologise if I seemed smug but I honestly do think the writing was ridiculous. Think about it. "Blue balls for the heart". Pizzolato wrote that line. The plot is so convoluted you need a damned chart to track it. Why not just make it a story set in the era of the LA riots ? That would have been a very cool setting. Tell the story of the corrupt detectives and the gangs of the city at that time. There are millions of stories that could be told within that era alone. But to spin it into this bizarre, byzantine story about infrastructure and mob bosses (and what mob is Vince Vaughns character supposed to be in anyway ? The Russian mob ? They only exist in NYC, and specifically Brighton Beach. Which is another place he could have set the story.) There's a fairly good video, although lengthy, about the failings of S2 and it covers most of the ground in detail, I can't remember the name but if you search using the over 20 mins filter and something like "why true detective season 2 failed" you'll find it. One of the comments there is from an HBO executive who helped approvr the season. He actually said they were concerned about the story being so bad, but wanted to get it out to cash in on the momentum of season 1. He also said Pizzolati refused help from other writers with the exception of one guy who helped him write his book Galveston, and even then those two ended up clashing. He said Pizzolatos success had gone to his head and he became difficult to work with, raging and excoriating everyone from the actors to the interns. He said the show was a nightmare to work on, and he left HBO in large part because of that season. If I find the video again I'll link it. It's not just all criticism, the uploader highlights the parts of the season he thought were good too. I reccomend it, even if you liked Season 2, because it's an enlightening video and well made, and I haven't found another video that dives anywhere near as deep, in respect of season 2.

This series is definitely a ship of Thesius. I'm on season three now absolutely loving Mahersala's performance. I do think people were too in love with season one and didn't really give seasons 2 and 3 a chance. There are patterns and very artistic choices to find watching the series. I do believe it was good at letting most of the Czechoffs guns to go off, but still a few pieces of story to speculate and theorize on. It does feel like season two could have been better fleshed out though. I still largely liked the story, perspectives, and characters. Each season so far has its detectives and complications to investigations. Each story has consistent themes of virtue, vice, time, cosmic horror, the macob, and spirituality. Each season has what feels like a planned unreliable narrator somewhere in it Chole, Frank, and Wayne. How much can you change from season to season and still be the ship of Thesius? It's beautiful in the longer running story honestly.

Season 1 is one of the greatest television shows ever created. That something so dark and bleak can be so rewatchable is remarkable. I watch it from time to time and delving into that twisted and haunted world of rural Louisiana with those two true detectives still feels special. Season 2 tried really hard to recreate that magic but the spell broke for me. All I could see was lesser actors running around "acting" their hearts out while trying to tell a confusing story. If anything it made me appreciate even more how special the first season was, how so many things had had to come together to create that "lightning in a bottle" and that it might very well never happen again. Season 3 was decent. Mahershala Ali is a really good actor and felt right for the series. But whatever qualities it had - I have just never felt the urge to rewatch it. Season 4 is where the series implodes. I watched the first episode in disbelief and not being into hate-watching, that was it for me. It’s made by people who’s clearly not very good at their jobs and - as is usual today - more concerned about pushing their world view and agenda rather than crafting a good story. And the attempts to try and tie the story to season 1 is just pathetic. As is the director Issa López’ response to poor reviews. Reviewer Eric Kain remarked that TD season 4 is to TD season 1 what Rings of Power is to Lord of the Rings. That sums it up nicely. It’s just hard to imagine this series ever being brought back on track again - this was most likely the end of the series and that’s probably the right and merciful decision. Thankfully I got Marty and Rust available on a hard drive. It’s about time to hunt down that Yellow King again. Time is a flat circle, as you know.

This was a good video. Gave me a new show to watch and informed me of only watching season 1.

I absolutely adored both season's 1 and 3. I couldn't make it past the second episode of season 2. There is a frequently commited, fatal error to MANY TV shows that just doesn't get mentioned nearly enough when citing what's wrong with the modern, long form TV: they absolutely destroy momentum that the show creates by allowing WAY too long to go between "seasons." True Detective might well be the perfect example of this error. You simply cannot allow 2-4 years go to by without releasing a new "season." With the sheer volume of things to watch being released on streaming platforms, it's so, so easy to completely forget about a show. Frankly, HBO is probably the worst offender in doing this. They did it with the Sopranos, Westworld, Carnivale, Rome, etc.

Season 3 is phenomenal and has great writing,acting and characters. People with zero attention span that hate that season 3 doesn't have mindless action scenes every two minutes and whose brain attention span was destroyed by social media and tik tok dislike it and anybody with taste who knows what good cinema and writing is like you and me love that season.

Fun fact, the script was originally intended to have McConaughey play the part of Woody Harrelson's character, but after reading the script, McConaughey insisted on playing the character he played. Thank goodness.

The acting in Season 1 was phenomenal. Hard to top those performances in addition to a stronger script/writing!

Season One: Arguably the best limited series I've ever seen. Matthew and Woody are the perfect duo. Complex! Thrilling! Unbelievable! Season Two: Tried way too hard despite the good cast and some tense moments. Vince Vaughn as a mob boss should never be a thing that ever happens. Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams were great! Season Three: This season started off great but after the first three episodes, the plot was too disjointed and the jumping back and forth between time periods made the story difficult to feel invested in. Season Four? You had me at JODIE FOSTER PLAYING A DETECTIVE! We'll see! 🤞

How did anyone have an issue with season 3? I thought it was a great successor to S1, sure it was a little slow but I thought it was a return to form and Mahershala was an incredible lead.

Season 3 of True Detective was much better and being proven to be a superior season over the last one. While the most recent fourth season is 94% on RT being way better than the first season according to the critics.

@@Ray03595 Not really you have a couple of TV series that had a crappy review that truly wasn't too good. These critics rating TV shows like how they're movies nowadays.
