oh my god, things like this freak me out. as a child many of my nightmares actually resembled poorly photoshoppes computer games for some strange reason. I have vivid memories of being between worlds, staring at a computer as these horrific beasts would stare back at me from inside the monitor and make these awful noises, muffled and distorted by thr low audio quality. its left a mark on me to this day and it causes me to feel genuinely distraught when I see poorly photoshopped hoaxes like dr. quack with red eyes

God I remember how obsessed my friends and I were about this game. I even remember getting my friend a Webkinz for her birthday but used the code for myself. When she went to redeem the code it didn’t work (since I used it) so she went to the store to exchange it for a new one but they wouldn’t let her... Lmao I was such an asshole.

It's interesting that rumors about games and media back in the day scared people so much. It was the fear of the unknown taking over people's minds just by a simple rumor, short and sweet that it was, triggering people to think in such ways. Nowadays with so much information on the internet, creepypastas and rumors such as these are mostly debunked easily or not thought as creepy anymore. Though those Dr. Quack edits still feel unsettling to me. Like an edgy flash animation invaded a game to enact violence on the peaceful inhabitants.

Webkinz is way different now. Dr. Quack is retired, and your pets can no longer get sick. It’s not fun anymore. It’s just not, it makes me sad

In my childhood, we had the infamous "100 Death" rumor. There's a game on the app store called "Wild Cheetah Sim". It was all the rage from 1st grade, and still is to some of the younger kids in my school. It was a game where you leveled up a cheetah to gain abilities, helper cheetahs, and stuff like that. There were enemies, like the frigging RHINOS, which I still hate to this day, and stuff like rabbits, etc. You can level up your health, strength, and stamina, and when you got to higher levels, you could get new abilities such as a Jump (a stun attack that can both help you run away or get closer to other animals). Anyways, the rumor. One of my friends in line as a child told me that she had heard that when you get to level 100, you have to find a key, and when you collect it, all your cheetah friends run away as you get ambushed in the area. She told me that it was called EVIL MODE, and nobody had beaten it yet. So being a Wild Cheetah Sim connoisseur, I decided to get to 100 levels. But in the end, I never did. I'm probably going to try again someday, but for now, it remains a mystery. (also if you wanna play the game is made by turbo rocket games, highly recommend)

I remember one time my sister stopped using the Talking Angela app because the character apparently had "cameras in its eyes" that would spy on you. In terms that actually make sense, the app would use the camera on your device to spy on you. Of course, a quick Google search rendered this moot, and it was regarded as nothing more than a childish playground rumor. I remember about a month later she continued using the Talking Tom series of apps as well.

I love the idea for the rumor that Neopets was behind "Webkinz killings", its so ridiculous yet so understandable as a little kid! I always thought Neopets was cooler anyhow, haha

omg I literally have very emotional journal entries about this from when I was 7 I remember crying so much bc I was terrified of the penguin with red eyes. The rumor I had heard was that the penguin was a Neopet and would jump out of the black box with a knife and cut all your webkinz heads off, which to me made sense because I saw Webkinz and Neopets as rivaling companies, kids either had one or the other. It actually kind of makes me sad that we will never have huge online games with such spooky rumors run rampant like this ever again, this was a relatively fun era back in the day where at any point your cute and adorable online pet simulator could just have something spooky happen and no one would believe you.

I remember hearing about the black box rumor from my mom. She was a social worker at different schools and would give counseling to kids who the school sent her way. She heard about it from one of her kids, and she remembered that I was obsessed with Webkinz at the time. She told me to watch out for it and I just remember being like lol ok whatever mom

I remember this very well. I was never into Webkinz but both of my sisters were. This rumor spread around their school about the “black envelope” where if you opened it, you’d Webkin would instantly die and you could never get it back. It wasn’t until Webkinz put out a statement that this was fake that they even attempted to play Webkinz again.

I was obsessed with these back in the day, I had like 20 of them. I also had a Webkinz birthday party in 3rd grade, it was great. Edit: I just counted them, I have 28.

I've been playing the game for years and never stopped. I don't make any new accounts because my old ones are still good, but I've surprisingly never heard of these rumors until today when I watched someone play the game after a long time of being scared of it. They claimed that people told them about a rumor where the old Mrs. Birdy would very rarely glitch at the beginning of adopting a pet, and when you finished entering your information, during the loading screen, she would kill your pet. They also mentioned a rumor about Dr. Quack but didn't say what it was about, which is why I watched this video. My pets never got sick, so I only visited him to do regular check-ups, and the only weird thing I ever noticed was he constantly told me my pet was tired, even if they were at 100 sleep and had been sleeping for a long time before seeing him. I don't know if it was a glitch or not, but it was the weirdest thing I've seen, and I've never seen anything about killing pets or the black box you mentioned to be the only true rumor about the game. I would always play this game after school and on weekends, it was a lot easier and more fun than turning on the Xbox, putting in the game and waiting for the screen to load. But back then, our internet was even worse than it is now, so it still took a long time, but I've always loved the game until they became money hungry, fired Dr. Quack and changed so much about it. You can't buy full room sets now unless you have a membership, and the TV no longer plays the comedy show or the cooking show, it doesn't do anything. I will still play the game from time to time, but I wouldn't pay a lot of real money just to collect items I don't need.

When I was in 2nd grade, my teacher had one of these and the entire class basically mad decisions about what webkinz does or whatever. But one day I was bored at home, I logged on to it and changed the password. When I got back to school the next day we all sat around the screen waiting for the teacher to log back into it. I got too scared I was about to get caught that I asked to go to the bathroom. When I came back to the classroom, everyone was freaking out because someone changed the password. I couldn’t remember what I set the password too so I couldn’t changed it back. I was never caught. I pissed a lot of people off that day.

I don't remember where I heard this exact version of the rumor, but the one I heard went like this. A black box would appear in front of you like an event present box and if you clicked on it, you would be greeted with a choice between three boxes. If you picked the red one, a stray pet would appear and slice your pet into a million pieces, spraying blood everywhere. If you picked the blue one, a stray pet would appear and strangle your pet to death. If you picked the yellow one, all of your Kinzcash and items would disappear. I like how this one kinda raises a moral dilemma because if this were real life, of course you should pick the intelligent being over the money and objects, but from the perspective of the games, one singular pet is a lot more replaceable than exclusive items and all the time spent accumulating Kinzcash and furniture.

God I still remember this dream I had about my Webkinz dying even though it was so long ago and it was really weird because in the dream they were all already dead and that was their default state and the dead ones were still playable but if you messed up or something they had some little status thing and if it said "dead" they were basically fine but they could be "deadening" and that mean "yo your pet is dying like for REAL for real" and past that they could be "deadened" which was "this dudes gone say your last goodbyes it'll be deleted within the week" and I woke up absolutely terrified. Also that one thing with the ghost on the vacation horrified me like I was having a good time and then it was like "ooooooo a ghost" and my pets bars just DROPPED and everything was empty my pet was so upset and horrified and i was even more upset and horrified because I thought my pet was about to die or something

My version of this rumor was that Neopets was hacking Webkinz and they were the killers. They would do so via two methods >stare at a mirror too long a Neopet comes out and kills you Webkinz >Let a Webkinz sleep for too long and a Neopet will spawn from the wall and go over to the bed and kill your Webkinz Despite never being told how they'd be killed or why it would happen, I was still scared, but my brother called bullshit right away. I remember being so very paranoid from then on until I forgot about it entirely.

I think I actually tested the eye-poster thing and, once it didn't work, I dismissed it.
