The Inglenook Shunting Puzzle on Pickwick Yard my 00 Gauge Model Railway.
Today's running session is one with a bit of a twist. The Inglenook Shunting Puzzle is a shunting game you can play with your layout that requires you to shunt wagons into a randomly selected order before a train can be dispatched. It's great for micro layouts and small shunting layouts like mine since you only need three sidings and a few wagons and it adds a real purpose to the shunting on your layout.
In this video I quickly explain all the rules (repeated below) before doing a very quick demonstration to show you how it all works in practice. Some people like to treat this purely as a puzzle that has to be solved as quickly as possible or others like to use it to add a bit of variation into their operating sessions and realistically shunt a train into whatever order is required. Either way it's great fun that definitely keeps you occupied!
The Inglenook Shunting Puzzle:
With 8 wagons on your layout, choose 5 at random to be shunted into a train in the order specified. (Fewer wagons can be used to make the puzzle easier!)
The Rules:
-Only use one loco.
-Wagons must be selected at random. Either use cards as demonstrated in the video or assign each wagon a number and use a random number generator.
-Wagons must be shunted into the same order as specified when selected.
-You are allowed to use three sidings to shunt your wagons. Two of these can hold three wagons at maximum while the third siding is allowed to hold five.
-The headshunt can hold your loco and three wagons at maximum.
Some people choose to build their own Inglenook Sidings layout that matches these rules (ie: only three sidings, sidings only long enough to hold three or five wagons, etc) but you can also use your own layout and play using honour rules like I'm doing. The sidings on Pickwick Yard for example can hold more than three wagons but to play the puzzle properly I still stick the rules.
You can also remove wagons from the layout to make things easier. For example I only use seven in the video to make the puzzle easier to solve and definitely not because I forgot I needed to use eight wagons! In the meantime, I do hope you enjoy this video and let me know if you give this a try on your own layout.

Good one . Yes very restful and therapeutic shunting . I used to love watching shunting at model railway exhibitions . Better if there is some purpose to it , which is where the game comes in .

This is a really interesting idea. I enjoy shunting as a logic game. Shunting in general is basically the classic thought exercise about the man trying to carry a hen, a dog and a bag of corn across a river.

It's an idea thats been around since 1979 in this form, but probably existed in other forms before this. Think it sorta passed a lot of youtubers who do railways by until very recently because its not a train going around a track. But it certainly involves more brain power and can be a lot more fun on a budget than trying to set up a layout where you can run 8 coach trains around and around.

I love the hidden pauses to throw the points and uncouple. Give a really smooth non-distracting demo of the puzzle. Nice slow speed on the loco too.

Wow, that's quite an impressive yet compact set up. The flat structures on the backdrop really blend in nicely with the cardstock buildings. Big fan of British-style layouts, they have had a huge impact on my own. Looking forward in keeping up with this channel.

I have a couple of Inglenook apps on my phone and play while waiting in Bank lines or to check out at the super market! I like to form trains of 5, 6, 7, and8 wagons in sequence. The lines are long here! One day I will build a shunting layout, but getting stuff to Jamaica is expensive. Pickwick has been a real inspiration for me. The only change I would incorporate is a run-around loop somewhere. Keep up these wonderful videos! Thanks.

I am still planning a combination of a timesaver with inglenook sidings and a railway traject ferry on my fictional private coastal railway company in the year of 1908 close to the baltic Eastsea at Luebeck in northern germany. Additional passenger service makes it more interesting for me. I enjoy such shunting or marshalling layouts very much.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I have a purpose built Ingelnook layout. It's only 900mm by 300 and it's actually my first micro layout. It's amazing how much fun you can have with such a minimalist track layout. Also I have introduced this game to a few friends with no room for any real layout. That's until they had a go at my layout and ended up building their own! I'm more then sure a few more will join in the fun of the Ingellnook shunting puzzle after watching your video. Great stuff!

I do think it challenges the idea that a layout has to be a big circuit in order to have fun. Thanks for this. I started with model railways in 2019 and created a small test layout. The idea was to see if I could lay track, do ballast, etc. Anyhow the design was on the Inglenook puzzle idea, but I was not sure about the 'rules', so this has been very helpful. Keith

Yes Inglenook refers to both the puzzle and the layout - the layout essentially is just built to fit the rules of the puzzle (if that makes sense) but you can play the puzzle on any layout just like I've done here. It's definitely a good subject for a first layout though as it's fairly simple to construct and has a tried and tested method of operation too. If you're considering getting into building something of your own I'd definitely recommend the Inglenook puzzle as a good place to start. Thanks for watching 😃

Very enjoyable as ever. Having seen ‘Inglenook’ banded about so much I never really knew of the science behind it till now. Something I can try with my boxfile layout. As a bit of constructive feedback, while I know we all have the right to try and recoup a few pennies with some Adsense, I did find all the adverts throughout spoiled the flow and prevented getting lost in the content. Lovely layout, looks very nice in operation! I posted a description of the Inglenook yesterday as well. You can make it to any length if you keep the sidings to the proper ratios. I'm adding my Inglenook Wye to that unused track at the bottom of your Timesaver layout. (that is the plan anyway...)

I'm testing out layout ideas and a shunting puzzle was something I played around with. ordering my baseboard soon so am going to definitely incoproate this into the sidings and station of what will be a small rural town my J70 can run around

For the inglenook shunting puzzle could you use Coaches instead of wagons or is it just for wagons

Hey Lewis, it was originally intended for wagons so it would fit into the smallest space possible but if you want to do it with coaches I say go for it! There's nothing to stop you and it would be really interesting to see carriages shunted together to form a train this way. You just need to make sure your sidings are long enough to take 3 and 5 coaches at a time, so you'll need a bit more space. Thanks for watching 😃

Hi Richard, in this video it was being done by "The Hand Of God" so not hands free I'm afraid - those parts were just edited out of the video. Usually though I use little strips of plastic to create an invisible ramp that lifts up the tension locks and gives pretty much the same effect. Thanks for watching 😃

Hey Brian, the points are all dead insulfrogs (many of them secondhand) but as you can see the P Class has no trouble with them at all. For uncoupling it was the "hand of god" but I cut those parts out of the video 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

Very interesting BUT are these set rules for the 'inglenook shunting puzzle'? If I were to build a model with a yard having different wagons surely I may have longer sidings yet still have a puzzle to get a train in the right order. In reality there must have been puzzles at some stations giving 'inglenook problems' but not to that siding length. Can someone explain please?

Hey Stephen, I don’t think the Inglenook Shunting Puzzle was ever used in reality - just for model railways. There’s no set lengths for the sidings, in fact I think the rules just state the sidings must be 3 and 5 Wagons long. It’s deliberately vague as if you have a modern layout 3 Wagons will be bigger/longer than the Wagons on a steam era layout. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy, in a real setting of a station yard, particularly in a rural setting, I am sure a shunting puzzle would exist in that delivered wagons from a 'pick up goods' train would probably arrive in the wrong order for where in the layout they could be attended to; such as cattle dock, milk platform, coal staithes. The inglenook puzzle is probably trickier than the real world, but with a model railway similar restrictions of siding lenth are probable.

How did you uncouple? Is it one of your invisible plastic ramps...? Very satisfying watching.

Usually I use the ramps but in this instance as I was uncoupling in odd places I just did it by hand and cut those sections out of each clip to keep the video moving. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 😃

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Hi, I really enjoyed the video and was wondering how you uncoupled the wagons as I couldn’t see any ramps, then I noticed the breaks in the video at the crucial moments! I am sure your layout would be ideal to incorporate perhaps just two uncoupling positions using delayed magnetic uncoupling system that I have developed and use on my layout It is demonstrated on a small test track by two short videos under MRTEE DELAY and STAY UNCOUPLING on KZfaq. 😲

I usually use clear plastic strips for uncoupling (See here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fuCEZrNj1b_Xo6c.html ) as I like to keep everything on this layout as simple as possible. For this video though I was uncoupling in different places so I did it by hand and just cut those sections out. Thanks for watching 😃

Hey Matthew, yep it doesn't matter which order the wagons are in or which order the cards come out it's always possible to solve the puzzle. That's the beauty of the inglenook challenge, there's plenty of combinations to solve so there's no chance of running out. Thanks for watching 😃

My track plans !!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I would love to make a small shunting layout ft a scrap yard ....etc Or a small station end , both based in the mid to late 80s when british railways were broke !!!!!! Hi Stuart, in this video I'm just did it by hand and cut those parts out of the video. If you look closely you can see where the edits are. That said, usually I use this nifty little trick for uncoupling on the layout: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fuCEZrNj1b_Xo6c.html Thanks for watching 😃

This is great though I think my layout might be a little bit too small for 8 wagons it's only got one siding but it dose have a run round loop. But I'm building a bigger layout based on watchet station that has a little harbour which I might build as an Inglenook

Ah, I do love a run round loop! Part of me wishes I'd included one on Pickwick Yard but then I quite like the challenge of not having one. I'd say it's definitely worth looking into including the inglenook on your new layout if you can though... just don't try to force it in if there's no space. Thanks for watching 😃
