On the flip side, longevity can also affect players' career numbers negatively. Magic Johnson is an all-time leader at 11.2 apg, so many consider him the greatest playmaker ever while crediting John Stockton's all-time record of 15806 total assists to his longer career. Yet it's due to playing more games way past his prime that the latter's career apg dropped below the former's. Magic averaged 13+ assists in a season one time in his career while Stockton did so five seasons in a row w/ less turnovers each time.

Stockton IMO was a better PG.
@grinningchicken

That’s a case on numbers not reflecting dominance at no time during his career would anyone have thought of trading Stockton for Magic. Magic could play all 5 positions at an all star level Stockton was never the best PG any season. He was just top 3 pg but for a really long time.

He made some stupid comments. Why would you pick the player who gives you 30 PPG during 10 years over 15 PPG in 20 season???? That all depends on the rest of your teammates. If you are scoring 15 PPG but making the rest of the team better and you are wining championships then the later option is the correct one. You need to check the Wilt Chamberlain paradox video from MDJ, it shows of Wilt socring LESS was able to win a championship. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edaqatWLltTTgp8.html

Its about time the basketball community start moving away from numbers only and pay attention to the context. The "analytics" will always favor recent players because of things such as pace of play, longevity, number of 3's taken, ease of scoring, less restrictive defenses such as hand check or hard fouling. MJ at his peak shooting more 3's, no hard fouls, and no hand checking? Not to mention he played in a big man era where the game was dominated by big men or big rim enforcers. FG% is the weakest argument to say why a player is overrated.

You do know that the greatest marketing scheme ever was for the new MJ. I have a master's degree in marketing and have done some work in this particular area. I got friends who exclusively do this in Los Angeles. The effort by the league, certain franchises and the media to find the next Jordan was way more than the MJ himself campaign. And when they found the closest thing they did every thing they could to make him Comparable. He made all star teams when he wasn't an all star yet. Made them when he was washed up. Got MVPs when Chris Paul did better. Got finals MVPs when Gasol did better and won defensive honors when his defense was minimal. Every thing they could to make him more like Mike.

If MJ had the best shooting percentage, you wouldn't be saying that. You guys need to get over yourselves. I been following the NBA since the seventies. MJ was great. But I will never see him, or ANY player as the greatest in a team sport. TEAM. MJ started winning because he was afforded better teammates. Same with Kobe, LeBron, Steph, KD, and all the "greats". The TEAM wins the championship. Not an individual.

I am not comparing the two players...it's just that you had to look beyond stats. Yes, if you have a look of the players that were around at the time he got 15+ rebounds, he was a monster on the glass. Especially in his area, even more in the eastern conference back then, where the pace of the game was much slower than now. Johnny Arnett he's so right. The problem with Willis is that he retired at 44. If he had retired let's say at 33, he would had had more than 12 rebounds as his career average and you wouldn't even dare to make such a comment.

@@aftastosk6016 The second half of Birds career was played with a bad back that had required surgery. Had HE retired at 33, his RPG would ALSO have been higher - and Bird was a LOT more consistent, he didn't have years (except for one injured year) he went below 8, Willis had SEVERAL long before he turned 33. The pace of play in the time WIllis played was NOT "much slower" than today or during the time Bird played. 10% or less difference for pretty much all of those years, most of those years closer to a 5% difference. And yes, I WOULD dare to make such a comment, as Bird was FAR MORE than his impressive numbers. He was also arguably THE most clutch player (not JUST shooter, ask Isiah Thomas or Magic) not just of his era, but of all time. He was also by many measures the most COMPLETE player of all time, had THE best work ethic, was at least a tossup for "killer instinct", was probably THE highest court IQ to ever play the game, it's a LONG list. NOBODY says any of that about WIllis. An interesting fact to keep in mind though. When Bird retired, he was the ONLY player to be in the Top 50 on ALL of PPG, RPG, and Assists per Game. He's STILL the only person in the top 60 on all 3 of those - and the only person that's ever been CLOSE was Wilt during the ONE YEAR he led the league in assists, but NOBODY is close for their career.

@@jeremyhart557 how is/was Lebron's peak as high as Michael's? That's gonna need some explaining. And Phil Jackson WAS NOT a HOF coach when he coached the Bulls; he made his legacy off MJ. They did it together, none had won before in the NBA so that's a poor point to pick at. Same goes for Pippen.

It's more simple than you think. The best players are the ones that bring the most excitement and respect. Having abilities that are special. In any sport. For example, bo jackson. Numbers? Ehh.. Talent? Holy shit....With that being said, remember when jordan played. The excitement surrounding him was insane. Everybody wanted his shoes, jerseys, posters, video tapes. Players want to wear his number. His inspiration to young players acting like him in the driveway. The respect from his teammates and enemies. I dont care about his numbers in ranking him. I cared about how excited I was to watch him. Lebron hasnt left that type of legacy. Jordan was the greatest because of what he did for the sport and what he left behind.

I believe in creating different lists to show these kind of things. GOAT lists should contain all accolades, their legacies, stats, all combined into one list. For example, in terms of accolades either Kareem or Jordan could top it (still think it's Jordan) But when we consider legacies, it's obvious Kareem won't come close to topping it. Just my say in the matter of GOAT lists

@@GingerNinja83 I never said anything against Jordan he is the GOAT in every way. But to say nobody cares about 2nd best and 3rd best is very ignorant to say as I am surrounded by comments on various basketball videos which show they clearly do. Also, you can't just disregard stats because growing up I used to think AI was the stuff because of how flashy and cool he was, but at the end of the day players like Duncan were clearly greater at just getting wins. But still, this is all just a battle of opinions and your opinion is one that I simply disagree with but still respect.

You should do a video on how good Kobe was in the 2012 - 2013 season after espn had him ranked out of the top 10 players in the league. And how he went on to lead the league in scoring and second in minutes before tearing his achilles. And dragging his team to the playoffs in the brutal Western conference 🙏

Not just the rules but the culture too. Players play with lowered intensity through the length of the game in comparison that gives them more longevity. Players used to treat stepping on the court like stepping on a battlefield, they gave everything once on that court. Very few players nowadays have that level of sacrifice towards the game.

The 10 year vid should be enlightening. I’m a bit of an NBA historian so i just have all kinds of career numbers dancing in my head. I also used to collect basketball cards when I was a kid so I can think of a bunch of players that will look much better for their 10 year prime, than they will for their entire career (LBJ and Karl Malone will remain basically static). This helps Jordan a lot because it cuts out the Wizards years. This will also help Larry Bird because it takes off the two back injury years. Wilt Chamberlain will look even more amazing. Should be fun.
