The Issue With Sonic's Voice

So a few days ago it was confirmed that Roger Craig Smith, formally known as THE voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, has officially… stepped down…? Been laid off, fired- Stopped. He’s officially stopped voicing the character, pretty much.
Regardless of my opinion on Sonic voice actors, you absolutely cannot deny the fact that Roger’s 10 year run was what made many kids, teens and adults around the world get into Sonic, very much the same way a lot of folks were introduced when Jason was around.

I’m going to miss Roger as Sonic while I liked him in Sonic Colours and Generations I hope the new voice actor makes Sonic sound great

Hopefully it’ll be Yuri Lowenthal, or Max Mittelman. But according to the discussion in the video, we all would be happy if all 3 voice actors for Sonic looped and switched in games or something like that. I don’t know about that. We’ll see. And I truly do want to have Ryan Drummond come back as the voice of Sonic because I loved the positive energy he had (alongside Roger) and I think he did a really good job, and everybody would want him back just for that. The rumors are uncertain that Sega would have no avail to do it, and I really do want Ryan to do the voice of Sonic again. I can have a touch on Jason Griffith’s take too, and I think he took on the same exact attitude that Ryan had. By the way, I love when Jason had a phrase for Sonic in Smash Bros Brawl and it was: ... well, I really liked the “NOW I’LL SHOW YOU! HHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!” He should say that when he uses all 7 of the chaos emeralds to transform into Super Sonic. My personal favorite though is “Come on, step it up!”

ahh 10 years was a good run and Roger did great! He really gave Sonic a unique and comedic voice. Personally I love Jason’s take on sonic he just sounds mature but still a young teen (idk if that’s makes sense haha) But I definitely can see Ryan coming back as a possibly because of how much he shows he’s willing to voice him again on twitter. Anyways, amazing video and I really liked the editing! Kept me interested!!

personally, I never really liked roger's voice on sonic (its most likely because of the writing) but I think he did his best with what he had and I hope he keeps voice acting.

3:29 The only bad story they worked on was Forces, in my opinion. They did love the franchise, they just had their own take on it's stories. While I'm glad they aren't writing for sonic anymore, the fanbase viciously attacking them for their take on sonic stories and not giving them the same send off as Roger is pretty scummy.

@@chrange9714 The duo has specifically stated that they went to wikipedia for their information on Sonic lore. And even then barely know the surface of anything. Sucks they lost a job, but I don't really care in the grand scheme of things.

This comment hasn't aged well since Charles Martinet is no longer voicing Mario, Luigi, and Wario I don't know about Waluigi, tho, because Kevin Afghani has been credited as only Mario, Luigi, and Wario

I was really hoping Roger would get to voice a script with good writing and voice direction before leaving, I really think the writers screwed over most of the sonic cast because I enjoyed them more outside of the main games

I think Roger works because of sonic maturing since the adventure games and heroes. But I feel like sonic has changed a lot as a character to the point where he feels less energetic almost.

Roger is a good voice actor but not a good sonic for me. He just doesn’t fit sonic at all. Just because he’s amazing doing other characters doesn’t mean he is amazing in all characters. Jason should’ve been the Sean schemmel of sonic. Tired of them constantly changing his voice

Uh actually that thing about Ben being too expensive may still be true. The REAL reason why they got roger was because they couldn’t come to an agreement with Ryan which was who they originally wanted for colors. But they weren’t willing to pay him the amount he needed so they got roger instead.

Source? Cuz if you can't find it, I think you might be mixing that bit of information for when they wanted to originally have a dreamcast Sonic for Generations. Not have him voice modern Sonic. In which case, they wanted to make Ryan leave his union and join Studiopolis, where Roger and the others voice at.

Boostifer both of these websites show proof of the interview. He spoke about it himself but I can no longer find it. But basically they weren’t willing to pay him what he needed to be finically secure.

At first I didn't like the voice when colors came out but over time it grew on me. As for Ryan..he doesn't seem able to do the voice anymore

If they don’t get Ryan Drummond I would be okay with Jason Griffith.I would be okay with Ben Schwartz too.

@@Kuzamer They might get Ryan Drummond for the Sonic Adventure remakes but, I wouldn’t be disappointed if Ryan refused because Sega are dicks to him. You make a good point. There’s a very obvious reason why they won’t bring back older voices. It’s because they are dicks normally but, then again maybe they will bring back Ryan Drummond and pay him because Sonic needs a big win. After the failure of Sonic Lost World,Sonic Boom and Sonic Forces yes.

@@Kuzamer Ryan Drummond might say no and if he says no then it’s on Sega. Sega will get Ben Schwartz to voice him in the remakes if Ryan says no probably.

How about Robbie Daymond Voice actor of Peter Parker/Spiderman from Marvel Spiderman 2017, Justin long The voice of Spyro from Skylanders academy, Will Friedle voice of Ron stoppable from Kim possible, last but not least Jason Biggs voice of Leonardo from TMNT 2012?

I actually found the adventure voice cast annoying and I honestly only liked the newer voice cast, but that's probably because I'm biased to what I grew up with. edit: I would love Ben Schwartz as sonic though

I really don't see how Ben comes anywhere near like sounding like the English version of Junichi. Ben's take on the character was way too soft, childish and innocent sounding, where as Junichi's take is cool, calm and confident. Ryan and Jason definitly channeled that more (I personally think Jason did it the best) but Ben just doesn't come close in either the way his voice sounds or how he talks. Honestly his voice comes off as awkward most of the time.

That's a fair stance I guess... I'm saying more in terms of literally, his tone of voice and the way his normal voice sounds. Not his mannerisms. Junichi in his performance to me is way more childlike sounding, and so is Ryan when he wants to be. But, I get what you're saying.

I like Jason,Ryan, & Jaheel more anyway, but I Roger was a great replacement, I'd be lying if I said I won't miss him. Also, would be cool if we had a Spider-Man shattered dimensions type of game or animated movie with all 4 of Sonic's voice actors in it voicing 4 different Sonics.
